Course 2, Discussion 3: High Expectations and High Warmth
Congrats! You made it the second course in the LDP! In this course, we focus on the specific interpersonal skills needed to be a strong leader on 7 Cups, including mastery of communication skills, time management, conflict resolution, stress management and empowering new leaders.
I know if you are here, you have read our values and culture guide. I would like to start off by further emphasizing one value that's required for a leader to be successful here, and that is balancing High Expectations & High Warmth.
Work environments with high expectations and minimal warmth tend to result in companies that are very driven, rule-oriented and risk-averse. The people do not tend to grow as much personally or professionally. On the other hand, workplaces that are high in warmth, but have minimal expectations, tend to struggle. Everyone is happy and feels loved, but not a lot of effective or focused work gets done.
7 Cups is high expectations AND high warmth. We expect a lot from you. You might feel like we think you are more capable than other people have suggested or maybe even more capable than how you see yourself. That is okay. Every person on the team has outperformed and done better than they expected. This is largely because warmth, patience, and trust help people make much more progress than they have in other environments. We have high expectations, but we will provide plenty of encouragement and guidance to help you get there.
✒️ What do you think happens if you, a 7 Cups leader, have an imbalance of expectations and warmth?
✒️ How do you think having too low of expectations, or too little warmth, will impact 1.) the community, and 2.) impact how you work with your fellow leaders?

What do you think happens if you, a 7 Cups leader, have an imbalance of expectations and warmth?
I think it leaves people under me confused. Either they feel unloved, or they feel supported but kind of sheltered in a sense. They feel like children, dearly loved and supported but kept away from any kind of work that engages them.
How do you think having too low of expectations, or too little warmth, will impact 1.) the community, and 2.) impact how you work with your fellow leaders?
1) Too low expectations makes the community stagnant and no one gets anywhere. We just stay where we are but no one does new things, learns new things or has new experiences. Too low warmth makes the whole point of this place fail. A place like this fails without warmth. We need to give warmth to members, and fellow listeners.
2) Too low expectations makes all leaders together stagnate but at the same time, minimal warmth makes others feel isolated and as if it is a hostile environment.

@gentlemelon85. I really liked your perspective on balancing expectations and warmth. You explained well how both are necessary for a healthy and successful community. I agree that support and accountability must go together. Great insight and thoughtful response.
@gentlemelon85 that is very interesting
@FrenchToast If I have an imbalance of expectations and warmth as a 7 Cups leader, it can create problems in both relationships and performance. If expectations are too high without enough warmth, people may feel pressured, unappreciated, or afraid to make mistakes. If warmth is high but expectations are too low, progress may slow down and responsibilities may not be taken seriously.
@FrenchToast
✒️ What do you think happens if you, a 7 Cups leader, have an imbalance of expectations and warmth?
I think having an imbalance between expectations and warmth can create serious issues in leadership.
High Expectations Without Enough Warmth !!
If I focus too much on expectations without enough warmth, I might come across as strict, cold, or unapproachable. This can make people feel pressured or judged instead of supported, which can reduce trust and openness. It would take away the purpose of our community
On the other hand, if I focus too much on warmth without maintaining expectations, things may feel comfortable but lack direction and growth. People might not feel motivated to improve or take responsibility, and the overall quality of support can decrease.
Balancing Between Two <3 ! (High expectations - High warmth)
So, I believe both are equally important. Expectations help maintain standards and growth, it push Ppl's forward improvement ❤️!! while warmth creates a safe and supportive environment.
Without one, the other loses its effectiveness 😊!!
✒️ How do you think having too low of expectations, or too little warmth, will impact:
1.) The community 😊!
If expectations are too low, the community may become less effective, as the quality of support might drop and people may not feel guided properly. It can turn into a space where comfort exists but the real progress are limited.
If warmth is too low, the community may feel unsafe or disconnected. People may hesitate to open up, which defeats the purpose of a mental health support platform. Trust and emotional safety are essential here, so lack of warmth can be very damaging ):
2.) Your work with fellow leaders ! ( I'm not a employee irl,but I still have got some Idea, which i would like to share it here 😊 )
(I've read something related to this topic back in the day's 😊 ) With low expectations, teamwork may become unstructured and less productive There may be less accountability, which can affect overall progress and reliability within the team !!
With low warmth, collaboration can become difficult. One don't trust another, Communication may feel tense or distant, and leaders may hesitate to share ideas or to just reach out for help. This can reduce teamwork and create unnecessary stress.
@AiluraTheCat,
I really liked the way you explained both sides of leadership balance 😊 I agree that warmth makes people feel safe and supported, while expectations help people grow and improve. Your reflection felt very thoughtful and caring, especially the part about emotional safety and trust in the community 🌼
@IamSkyBlueAakash
Aww, I appreciate your response honestly. you did a great job by acknowledging my perspectives 😊. Thank ya.
You're amazing ;)
@FrenchToast,
✒️ What do you think happens if you, a 7 Cups leader, have an imbalance of expectations and warmth?
I think an imbalance can create problems in both directions. If a leader only focuses on expectations without warmth, people may feel pressured, unheard, or emotionally disconnected. On the other hand, if there is only warmth and no expectations, growth and responsibility may slowly decrease. A good leader needs both support and accountability together.
✒️ How do you think having too low of expectations, or too little warmth, will impact 1.) the community, and 2.) impact how you work with your fellow leaders?
Having very low expectations may reduce motivation and make the community less active and focused. At the same time, too little warmth can make people feel uncomfortable, unsupported, or afraid to share openly. Among fellow leaders, this imbalance can affect trust, teamwork, communication, and overall collaboration.

Will do for sure!!
@IamSkyBlueAakash 🤗
You explained the balance between expectations and warmth very clearly I'd say :) i think the same 😊 n I agree that both are needed, too much pressure can push people away and too much warmth without structure can slow growth
Your point about how it affects both the community and leaders is especially insightful. Yayy!

@IamSkyBlueAakash very rightly said, having warmth towards your team is primary, putting crazy pressure will make the team distant from you, and then the team wouldn't like to work with the leader
@FrenchToast
What do you think happens if you, a 7 Cups leader, have an imbalance of expectations and warmth?
if i lack the warmth then id not be in that leadership position anymore.
✒️ How do you think having too low of expectations, or too little warmth, will impact 1.) the community, and 2.) impact how you work with your fellow leaders?
It will affect the team's motivation and morale- it will affect their work/productivity. Being less warm will create distance, and my team would start avoiding me, which is not good for the overall objective of the team.
@Pudding1000 you are so real with your responses, exactly on the point.
I am positive that you will be a great leader! All the best on your journey~🍀🎐
@FrenchToast
What do you think happens if you, a 7 Cups leader, have an imbalance of expectations and warmth?
If I as a 7 cups leader, were to have an imbalance of expectations and warmth, then I won’t be able to effectively lead my team nor can qualify as a good team leader for them. As, having expectations and low warmth, can hinder team performance, causing burnout, compromise team’s feeling, and well – being, while also making me less unapproachable resulting in bad communication.
On the other hand, high warmth and less expectation, takes away the productivity of the team. If I as a team leader were to only possess high warmth, then I would be an empathetic kind person. But not a good leader, who can guide my team well.
How do you think having too low of expectations, or too little warmth, will impact 1.) the community, and 2.) impact how you work with your fellow leaders?
1). Having too little expectation or too little warmth, hinders the community growth, makes the individuals you are working with double question their choice to be a part of the community, becomes obstacle for the productivity, and leaves a little room for the community to thrive.
2). It will impact the fellow leaders that I work with by making me look not dedicated or serious enough towards my work. If I am someone with too little expectation or too little warmth, I could get reported too, saying I am unfit as a team leader. I will surely look unapproachable to other leader, if they have something to share with and more.
@yoursmileisasradientastheSun
You have explained this really clearly and thoughtfully.
What stands out is your awareness that leadership needs both warmth and expectations to create balance care without losing direction, and structure without losing connection.
You are also thinking beyond yourself and considering the impact on both the community and fellow leaders, which is a strong leadership quality.
This kind of reflection shows you’re already building the mindset of a responsible and aware leader.

@FrenchToast
✒️ What do you think happens if you, a 7 Cups leader, have an imbalance of expectations and warmth?
As a 7 Cups Leader, If there is imbalance between expectations and warmth, the support can become less effective. Too many expectations with low warmth may feel pressuring or judgmental, making the person withdraw. On the other hand, high warmth without expectations may feel comforting but not truly helpful for growth or progress. A healthy balance is important because warmth builds trust and safety, while expectations provide direction and structure for meaningful change.
✒️ How do you think having too low of expectations, or too little warmth, will impact1.) the community, and 2.) impact how you work with your fellow leaders?
If expectations are too low, the community may start to lose direction, motivation, and accountability, which can reduce growth and make support feel less meaningful. If warmth is too low, members may feel judged, unsafe, or unheard, leading to a lack of trust and reduced openness. Similarly, when working with fellow leaders, low expectations can create weak collaboration and unclear standards, while low warmth can lead to poor communication and strained relationships. In both cases, imbalance weakens trust, teamwork, and the overall effectiveness of leadership.
@Smilingsoul11 this is very informational and insightful thanks for sharing and keep going
@FrenchToast
✒️ What do you think happens if you, a 7 Cups leader, have an imbalance of expectations and warmth?
it would make me look unapproachable and would lead to disruption in the aim of leading any sort of team
✒️ How do you think having too low of expectations, or too little warmth, will impact 1.) the community, and 2.) impact how you work with your fellow leaders?
i would create blurriness in vision and nobody could rely on us creates uncertainty
@HealingAlien4444
I really like the concise yet crisp version of your answers , what you say are true and I hope these can help you grow as a leader.
@FrenchToast ✒️ What do you think happens if you, a 7 Cups leader, have an imbalance of expectations and warmth?
A lack of warmth on my part as a 7 Cups leader can create an environment that feels unempathetic and unsafe, undermining the very purpose of our community. Likewise, a lack of clear expectations or objectives would make it harder for me to stay consistent, motivated, and committed to doing my best.
✒️ How do you think having too low of expectations, or too little warmth, will impact 1.) the community, and 2.) how you work with your fellow leaders?
1) Impact on the Community – Low expectations can hinder focused efforts and meaningful progress toward the humanitarian mission we stand for. Too little warmth can weaken the very purpose of the community, which is to provide a safe, reliable, growth-oriented, and supportive mental health space.
2) Impact on Work with Fellow Leaders – Low expectations can result in work becoming concentrated in the hands of only a few people, reducing collaboration and shared responsibility. They can also limit opportunities to build mutual understanding among leaders. Low warmth can diminish the motivation to grow, creating an unsupportive environment where conflicts are more likely to persist.
@Hermionetps I really like how you explained the impact on both the community and fellow leaders. I agree that balancing warmth with clear expectations is what helps people feel supported while continuing to grow :)
@FrenchToast
✒️ What do you think happens if you, a 7 Cups leader, have an imbalance of expectations and warmth?
Having an imbalance of expectations and warmth will eventually affect my leadership skills in a negative way, if I have high expectations and low warmth that will make me a cold leader who doesn't care about the people who are under his leadership and this spread that feeling among those people eventually weakening the bond among people, giving rise to a feeling a revolt that will also be visible in the productivity of the project.
✒️ How do you think having too low of expectations, or too little warmth, will impact 1.) the community, and 2.) impact how you work with your fellow leaders?
1.) the community will become tolerant to unprofessional/inappropriate behaviour of the expectations are low, the people will just start accepting mediocrity and laziness as new normal. And the community will lose the collective and supportive feeling if the warmth is low and thus stop being a community.
2.) if the expectations are low people will be okay with bare minimum which night also affect the respect and persona of the leaders who do not fulfill their needs based on the demand rather just do the bare minimum even though there is demand of something else. If the warmth is low or will give rise to hostility, Pride and other feelings that will disrupt the collective feeling that we share for each other.
@sereneMango2512
I really like how you explained the impact on both the community and fellow leaders. I also think low expectations lead to little to no order in the team
