Course 3, Discussion 1: Service Leadership at 7 Cups
The term Service leadership (based on the philosophy of servant leadership, in which the main goal of the leader is to serve). Sometimes leaders or community members who help with projects receive high praise for their efforts (and they all deserve it) but this is never to take away or undermine the contributions of listeners who fly a little bit more under the radar. How one chooses to spend their volunteer time on 7 Cups is up to them & we love you all the same!
We've long said that if you want to be a mentor, be a mentor, eventually you'll get a badge. These service leadership roles are incredibly important to the functionality of our community. The individuals in these posts do an excellent job helping to keep our community safe and positive. I am very thankful for them.
Service leadership is simply about where you plan to spend your time. To those of you out there who focus 100% on member chats, we LOVE YOU! To those of you out there who focus on community programs, we LOVE YOU TOO! All of these contributions are equally valuable and important. As a collective community, our aim is to honor your contributions, no matter where or how they manifest.
In this vein, my hope is that you will remember 3 key things:
1. Self-care - always! Make sure self-care is baked into your volunteer work here
2. Don't take on more than you are able. If you don't have the bandwidth to do something, you owe it to yourself and the community to say no. It is 100% okay to say no. (And if you are asking someone to help you with a project, please do not get upset if someone has to say no.)
3. Remember that 7 Cups is an ecosystem. Every single contribution matters!
If you'd like to be in a service leadership role, my advice would be:
1. Pay attention to how others are contributing
2. Figure out what gets you excited in the community!
3. Once you have an idea of what gets you excited, dive in! You dont need to have a mentor badge to help out, get involved & start learning.
4. If you're not sure how to get involved, you can chat with a mentor or sign up for listener coaching.
5. Once you feel comfortable with your area of attention, apply for the appropriate mentor track.

Service leadership is where a leader's top priority is serving others. One example would be that the leaders always make sure to welcome all the newer members and make them feel comfortable in such a new space shared with others.

Service leadership is a great thing according to me. where the objective is not to gather praises but to serve truly. Services are the greatest contributions one can make in their life.
Example: The leaders who welcome newbies in the community or the leaders who help each other or uplift others in the forums or group chats

Service leadership is the concept that the most effective leaders focus on serving and inspiring their team and wider community, from the idea that success is achieved by driving personal growth and support for others.
An example of service leadership I have seen on 7 Cups would be hosting the Sharing Circle.

I think the idea of servant leadership is truly inspiring because it focuses on leading with empathy, humility, and purpose. It’s about putting others first, helping people grow, supporting their needs, and creating an environment where everyone can thrive together. A true servant leader leads by serving, not by controlling, and that builds genuine trust and respect.
An example of servant leadership I’ve seen on 7 Cups is when community leaders or mentors take time to personally check in on others, not just to give direction, but to listen, guide, and encourage. Their focus on supporting listeners, valuing everyone’s effort, and helping others succeed really shows what servant leadership looks like in action.

what i think about the idea of service leadership is that the practice and developing of self leadership builds great character and discipline in the people who believe in helping others. one example of service leadership that i have seen on the 7 Cups platform are fellow Active Listeners in the Leadership Support Room who answer the questions of their Active Listener peers.

Service leaders serve in a leadership position to improve the community on 7Cups. Their skills are very valuable to the community as a whole.

I really like the concept of service leadership because it focuses on helping others first. There are tons of great examples of it on 7 Cups — from forum moderators to group chat hosts — all working hard to keep things positive and organized. I think it’s great that our leaders serve the members’ needs since that’s who the platform is really for!

I completely agree with this! It is so important for us to work together for the benefit of our community. The group chat/forum moderators do a lot to help us interact and get to know each other in a positive way and that is super important.

I think that service leadership is not only valuable but a necessary part of peer-led organizations like 7 Cups (and really any organization, for that matter). In an environment where people work towards improving the greater community rather than just serving themselves, there are higher levels of happiness, lower crime rates, and a general increase in productivity.
7 Cups is full of opportunities to perform service leadership. You could be a mentor (or Teen Quality Star), a peer supporter for your fellow listeners, a chat supporter, or many other very important leadership roles that work together to create a harmonious community here on 7 Cups.
