Having high expectations from yourself is really good. It can make you surely productive and it can give you confidence. Sometimes we get more than our expectations so it's good to have high expectations according to me. It's beneficial to realize about your strengths and gifts.
But I believe that it's good to expect from yourself but not from others. We should try to not expect from people ❤
@LovetoGod
Understand our strengths and gifts helps us to feel confident. I believe hoping for the best from others gives better results than having expectations.
@amiablePeace77
Yeh I was going to say that but I didn't lol. We just can hope from people. Expectations can hurt. So just have a hope for good❤
Hi @LovetoGod
You're right about trying to have no expectations from others. We have little to no influence on others & having expectations on such matters may lead to disappointment.
At the same time setting reasonably high expectations from oneself is a great trait.
@alphav7
Yeah ❤
For me motivation... Inspiration works better, whether towards the self or the other. Expectation reduces joy and is more limiting than set you out on the path of achievement...!!!
@RideaRainbow
Totally. Expectations can be limiting at times. Progress must be the real measure & varying expectations depending on other factors too.
@amiablePeace77
Do you think having high expectations good or bad?..... I guess it just depends on the situation. (For instance as a Fitness Instructor), I put a 'High expectation" on myself to Always lead a great class! To be the best that I can be.... to leave my participants drenched in sweat, and for all of them to get out of the class what they are coming for~.
I have a private class on the other hand that I also do for Seniors.. and the participation can be up or down Depending on the day.... so if I know that I am going to have a much smaller class, My expectations aren't as high for it. I just go in, to simply give them a "Fun" class. And for all of us to just have fun together while getting in movement. And don't put too much expectations on myself as well.
Another scenario could be with 'People' on a personal level........ If I feel that I am close with someone, I do have High expectations from them as a close friend (or relative) whatever the situation. If someone says they are going to do something, or call, or be somewhere etc..etc...,then I have High expectations that it will be done. Just as If I tell them I will do something or be somewhere etc.., then I make sure to plan & do just that and what I said or "Committed" to. If that doesn't happen (on their end), it is a HUGE let-down. Mainly if its a "repeated" action. Then I won't consider them as close as I thought they initially were. And will guard that relationship that I have with them in the future. And any trust will also be lost.
I also have high expecations of myself doing the best at everything I set out to do. I guess I've always been that way being an only child. Most of the time, I feel I meet those expecations whatever they are. But...I've also had moments where I've let myself down as well.. But, thats life right? We move on and try again.
What works best for you?.....Well to be honest, and in a nut-shell. To Say what you mean, Mean what you say, do what you say you are going to do, be where you say you are going to be (unless there is a Really great excuse for not doing so). And ... for me to continue to do and be "My best" for those that continue to show up and do their best for me as well!
@PoliteOcean
It makes a lot of sense to me to vary expectations based on what people actually can do. It would be wrong to expect for example seniors to perform the same way as healthy young people.
Feeling let down by someone who is close to us hurts, especially if it happens repeatedly. It's not something we are prepared for. It is hard to lower our expectations or just to hope for the best but it can prevent being hurt and loosing friends.
@PoliteOcean
Life has a lot of setbacks along with good moments. It's fine if you let yourself down sometimes, you can always bounce back. At the same time, it's good to see you have a reasonably high expectation from yourself. That's really great.
@alphav7
Thank you for your insight and your kind words! They are appreciated! ![]()
@amiablePeace77 it really depends, i feel. sometimes, having high expectations and those expectations not being met to our extremes makes us disappointed, whether it be at ourselves or the circumstances or both. it's hard when you put so many hopes and pressure into things only for it to come crashing down when things don't go how you expected them to go and it can push you further back if you're not prepared to handle that outcome. on the other hand though, it's true that expectations can turn into goals for you to reach as long as they're reasonable and not, for example, putting a short time frame to heal from a big life event.
@mobteru
Great points and yes, expecting to heal within short time from something that needs a lot of care and attention does simply not work - that's when expectations cause us more suffering.
@amiablePeace77 thank you for your response! i'm glad you agree, we really need to give as much time to ourselves as possible especially when times are tough
@mobteru
Totally agree with that, @mobetru. Setting unrealistic and unmeasurable expectations can cause disappointment. But, at the same time reasonable achievements are totally fine.
@alphav7 yep yep, totally agree! happy to see that you do too :]
Things are never perfect for a long time so I try not to expect it.
Lowering expectations helps me cope with change.
Having high expectations can be good or bad because if you accomplish your goal it is good but if you fail it makes you feel really bad
@scarletPear1945
Accepting failure can be hard for sure for many people. I believe though that the more we learn to accept the easier it gets but goals setting needs to be realistic.
@scarletPear1945
It's indeed painful when one fails to achieve their goals after setting expectations that are too high.
That's a really thought-provoking post. It's said that expectations that aren't met become the biggest source of despair and worry. But, at the same time having no expectations means there would be no yardstick to measure progress.
High expectations are good but, one must always have an eye on reality.
I tend to keep expectations a little above what my perceived capabilities are. It helps me extend my capabilities and does not cause any big disappointment at the same time.
@amiablePeace77 Having high expectations is good to keep you motivated in the right direction. But at the same time too much expectations might lead to overwhelm. So be balanced and understanding of what you can really do :)
I would say having a modest level of expectations is best. Having expectations that are too high will only cause burnout and disappointment, especially if you have too high expectations of yourself. High expectations CAN be good, but it's always better to be realistic as well.
What works best for you?
Well to be honest I can be a bit of a pessimist from time to time, so my expectations for how other people treat me is very low. I tend to expect unkindness from others rather than kindness when I first meet them, but that's mainly because I grew up seeing the absolute worst in people like my family. Perhaps one day that will change.
When it comes to having expectations of myself, I tend to know my limits well these days. I don't try to force myself to do things that I really don't want to do. This doesn't mean things like chores of course, but rather things that I think I SHOULD do (i.e having children, being an extrovert, having a certain hobby, etc.).
@cafedaydreams
I'm very sorry to hear that you grew up under harsh conditions, hugs. I hope that you will meet many kind people here and irl so that you can heal from what you experienced in childhood. ![]()
Nice that you decided for a path in your life which allows you to live authentically and not what anyone expects from you.
I think having high expectations is a good thing, as long as the expectations are still realistic! I'm a huge advocate for not settling for less than you deserve (whether that be in relationships, friendships, career, etc.) and believe that it's important that we know our worth, and that our expectations reflect that :)
