For me, goal setting needs to be clear enough to have room for hope and problem-solving: hope involves knowing that there might be more than one pathway to get there and so that helps me see the obstacles as challenges rather than mere distractions.

@SoulfullyAButterfly I think the best way I try to stay on track with my goals is to try and think of the future. I know it's important to stay present, but having those long terms dreams keeps me focused and realize what I am working towards when I am feeling overwhelmed!
@fruityPond7887
Your dreams or ideas keep you going. Thats Great.
@IsayUncle Thank you so much! š
@SoulfullyAButterfly
"Clear enough" and "Hope" Those are so important and then obstacles are not crushing goal stoppers. Sometimes when goals are too big, they get confusing and we lose hope of ever getting it done. It's so important to to do the small goals to the big goal. The small goals are clearer and the obstacles seem smaller and while getting closer to the big goal we stay encouraged and hopeful.
@IsayUncle
Your mention of how important HOPE is made me think maybe you'd like to see the graphic that I made yesterday...
That's one of the many pictures I've taken of my morning glories.

@EmbStitcher33
@EmbStitcher33 - I am so sorry I did not see this post earlier. It is a beautiful picture and you turned it into an amazing graphic. FANTASTIC!I love it, thanks for shareing.
We must stay hopeful to enourage those losing hope.š
@IsayUncle
Better late than never... I was wondering if anyone would grasp the meaning of this one. And yes, that's one of my Morning Glories I grew off my back porch.
Thank you so much for your kind worlds. ā¤ļø š
@EmbStitcher33
My pleasure, I hope you have a wonderful day today š
I learn about the goals VS systems so I guess the way to reach goals is by making a great system and have supportive people around you!
@Aileen1114117
That is such a blessing and so true... to have supportive people around you. That helps a lot. What are "goals VS systems"?
@IsayUncle
There's a link in share below by ouicherie :) - just found it myself too super interesting read!
@WorriedMagpie
Thx, just looked at it. Looking forward to checking it out!
@SoulfullyAButterfly ah... more space to write than on Twitter š I think we have to understand ourselves.
I'm generally not an ambitious person, and I'm not good at focusing on goals. When I did, every day it's not achieved, I felt like a failure. There are so many external and internal factors playing (obstacles).
One internal factor for example, I live with adhd. I have to trick my brain to produce dopamine.
Focusing on system is a game changer. Learn more about this click here
When key metrics are set, I set my easily achieved system with consideration of my time and energy. As long as I follow and do the system, there's a sense of achievement in it.
A sense of achievement, regardless how small, triggers dopamine that helps with motivation.
It's important to practice self-compassion and I'm not going to compare myself with a highly organised person like @vivelespatates š but if you don't mind, would you share how do you focus on your goals and overcome obstacles, vive? š¤
@ouiCherieThanks for posting the link, looking forward to checking it out more.
I donāt know how focus on goals instead of obstacles I am not good at goals yet I am still learning to do goals
@theboymoana
That's a good point. Lets practice. Do you want to learn how to focus on your goals? If the answer is yes, then we have our first goal for you.
I'm going to suggest this goal for you BUT you must state clearly that this is YOUR GOAL! State clearly that your goal is; "To learn how to focus on goals instead of obstacles". That's Step One: COMMIT to something that is IMPORTANT TO YOU!
if you like this idea the we can continue to step two if you wish, just think about it and if you can make this goal fun.
State clearly that your goal is; "To learn how to focus on goals instead of obstacles".
And we'll go to STEP TWO next.
"It's not doing what we want to do that
makes us happy, it's learning to like what we have to do that makes
life wonderful". author unknown
@IsayUncle
ok goal is to learn how to focus on goals instead of obstacles
@theboymoana
Step one. State clearly, Write down your goal. Doing it for real is the best way to learn. What is your goal. If it a long term goal we will have to break it down to smaller parts so list those if you already know what those are.
@theboymoana
OOPS... Posted last post before finishing. Sorry
Your primary goal is to learn something. To learn anything we must research and study. Luckily for you there is some studying material already on this thread for attaining your goals. It's called the S.M.A.R.T. Method.
Lets say your obstacle is you do not like to study. Either a new goal arises (Learning how to study) OR you choose not to work that hard. AT THIS point you have chosen NOT to pursue your goal. YOU made a choice to stop trying to reach that goal because we don't like studying or don't know how to do it well. There is a fork in the road here. Choose to quit your goal OR choose to study. To get your goal you must study... to study is to learn.... to learn is good and it feels good. YOUR obstacle and your choice to overcome just enriched your life and that is the beauty of obstacles.
It is never the obstacle that stops us from attaining our goal.... the obstacle just try's to break our resolve and determination. Understanding this... Our new goal is to learn how to build our resolve and determination and /or pick goals we are passionate about and willing to fight for.
@IsayUncle
I donāt understand all this steps mean I am confused
@theboymoana
It is very easy to be confused. Do you know what is confusing you? Are your goals too big and confusing or do you know what your goals are? If your goal is to understand the concept of achieving goals, THAT IS A HUGH GOAL. Way big... Tons of theorys and data on how to achieve goals. Very big, Very hard to understand by anybody, not just you so don't feel bad about that.
Do you have any smaller goals to practice with?
Good question !
I think I'm slowly getting more of a handle on this, it's been a lot of waking up and saying "right what are we doing today" .. but rather than making it up..
*Drumroll* ... I have a schedule! :D
I'm doing the "first things first" path atm, going through QI II & III tasks, I've gotten more of a handle on what I thinks important through doing this, keeping those things in mind makes getting tasks done so much more easier!
Also not getting frustrated with myself for not getting it all done! - I've watched a few Taoist philosophy videos and the concept of "Wu Wei" - the art of non-action action (watch some stuff I can't explain very well!) Has really resonated with me, when I feel myself forcing something I try to step back and analyse the why.
It's a work in progress, the schedule is getting more organised each week, but oh man those little green ticks make the dopamine hit! - I'm also working with ADHD so motivation can be a day killer in an instant, but knowing I have some "easy wins" on the schedule like - take my inhaler makes it easier to stay on track.... For the most part! š¤£
I've just seen the system v goals thread! Oooh I will be doing some reading today! :D šš¦

Well - goals - ha.ha.
I had to put down my goals many! (about 18) years ago because of severe sickness (ME/CFS - lack of energy). All I can do is to live in the moment. But I'm very glad when I get the energy to do something, like giving water to one of my flowers. Then I say: "Thank you Jesus". But it is also hard, most of the time in bed/bench. But I still can use my brain. So no big goals for this lady - ha.ha. Well; the small ones are; eating, clothing, doing a little bit cleaning in my house. So - that's my life. Ha.ha.
@Helgafy
Sorry to hear of your illnesses. That makes it so very hard at times. Sometimes the small goals are the BIG ONES! Be proud of yourself and keep at it. God Bless.
@IsayUncle
Thank you so much Isay. And God really bless you too!
I've been learning to break goals down into manageable chunks. I'm still so frozen up by short term goals that I don't really have any long term goals set. I have to work on that next.
@meremuse
Same here. I totally relate. I have bigger ideas but they are not really goals because of the daily smaller ones. I am proud pf myself for achieving the smaller ones, everyone should be. You Too. I believe the larger ones will materialize if we continue pushing forward.
How do you focus on your goals instead of obstacles?
By making time for myself and telling myself the goal(s) are worth it...
Iām a single parent going through a custody battle.
Trying to get full custody (one of my major goals) and spend as much time as possible with the little one.
Long-story-short, called the cops on alcoholic ex/sonās dad for punching holes through the walls of our old place after locking little one and myself away from him. After that, he was place in temporary care of exās (negligent) sisterā¦
My goal is to get him back and make sure he feels loved and safe, as he does not like being a this auntās houseā¦
Anyhow, I also need to try and make time for myself as wellā¦
When I hangout with family or friends, I lose sight of my goals.
I had plans to get better at drawing, learn more foreign languages, practice programming, cook new recipes/eat healthier, exercise, sports, write music/play music, create animations/make my own video game, etc⦠but when Iām around other people, I lose sight of those goals now⦠its not the same as many years ago, where I would have different college friends, where I could do EACH of these hobbies with different college friend groups. All I do here in this new state/city is drink at barsā¦karaoke thereā¦and not a lot. Its getting monotonous and boringā¦I donāt even care that much about drinking firstly⦠but every time Iām hangout with my family or new friends, thatās all we doā¦
I need to be alone for awhile and try to get my own place again[temporary live with relatives].
Nothing against my family, I just miss being alone and doing ME.
I also want to try and implement my son in my hobbies so he doesnāt feel left out.
He already likes to draw, for example.
I want to try and draw more with the little one.
Heās also multilingual[he knows this countryās language and my familyās native language], I want to teach him his fatherās languages/culture as well, so he doesnāt lose it...heāll end up knowing 4 languages if he does. I need to teach myself those languages as well. Heās also learning sign language, due to him not being very verbal based on age, so thatāll be 5 languagesā¦abut he understands what Iām saying AND signing.
If the little one ends up not having the same hobbies later on, thatās OK too.
Heās young now, that heāll try anything, but when ge gets older, I know itāll be a bit different.
Iāll support him as best as I can!
Iām getting way off topic hahaā¦
Pretty much, the ONLY way I can focus is by being alone honestly.
I get distracted when other people are around me these daysā¦
Iām naturally a lone wolf and do better alone.
@ImpudentIncognito
Your doing great. I didn't think you were getting off topic at all. I hope some single parents chime in here and share some of thier stories of how they manage it. I firmly believe alone time is key to sanity but have no children or experience in this area to share with you, except.... I agree, I need a lot of alone time too. I love the idea of melding your natural and art time with the little one and letting him be a part of it. That's awesome!

When I face an obstacle I stop and take a breath and conquer it
