The Dog

Trigger warning: a sad story, but with a happy ending. Themes of animal abuse and abandonment, though there are no gruesome details.

I thought about sharing one of my older stories, one from about 14 years ago, but my stories from then were more bleak. They did inspire me to use darkness, but I want to turn darkness into light. Hence, this story. I present:

The Dog

The dog began his life in a fairly ordinary manner. After being fostered for the usual time, a seemingly kind and loving family adopted him. This family received him for free, for his foster parents were giving people and merely wanted to see more joy in the world. The dog was happy and joyous to be alive, appreciating all that crossed his path.

The adopting family had put on a collective mask when picking up the dog. Darkness lived in their hearts, and they had no intention of providing the level of care required for a dog to thrive in life. In fact, the dog was to serve as an outlet for the family's frustrations. He received no name, and was simply called "dog".

The family consisted of a mother, a father, and a young child. None were particularly bothered whether the dog was fed and so he was often left hungry. Occasionally, he would be given bad food, and rarely, the cheapest kibble that the family could find, not conducive to a healthy life. No comfort food was ever given.

The child would pull on the dog's ears and tail, causing great distress. It was not gentle or playful in any respect. The mother would chastise the dog for no reason, yelling at him and blaming him for things that could not possibly have anything to do with him. The father would physically assault the dog.

The dog endured the hardships, clinging to hope that if he remained good, the family would see him for what he was: a pure-hearted boy with no ill-intent whatsoever. He was forced to sleep outside with no kennel or bedding. Each day he awoke with renewed vigor—only to have it dashed.

This continued for years. He lost weight, and his health suffered greatly. The family refused to address his condition and actually laughed at his poorly state. It was a vicious cycle, with the family not learning anything and the dog having endless forgiveness. However, the dog was capable of learning, and although it took a long time, he saw that the family was not changing.

On a dark and cold winter night, the dog escaped. He knew his life was coming to an end and was determined to see a little of the world before he passed. He limped slowly around the town in the rain, not entirely sure what he was looking for. He was just seeking. Anything was better than the horror he had experienced.

He happened upon an abandoned, homeless child, hiding in a vacant and rundown house. The two became fast friends, finding great solace in each other's company. The child was not especially creative, but wanted to give the dog a name. The child simply called him: "Buddy".

There was not much the child and Buddy could do. Buddy was too sickly to play, and the house was empty regardless. So, the child just held him and talked to him softly. The child spoke of nice things: the sun shining; leaves whispering in a cool and gentle breeze; birds flying free and high. He named all the colours he could, and even sang songs.

On the last line of the last song the child could remember, Buddy drifted into an eternal and peaceful sleep. The child wept deeply. He was ever grateful that he had found a friend in the cruel world that neglected them both. Thankfully, when morning came, the child left the house in search of help, keen to find more light in life. They were assisted by empathetic people, and their life improved dramatically.

Buddy found himself in a strange situation. His consciousness continued on into a realm where he met a being, one of infinite compassion. This being had a colourful and pleasing aura that put Buddy at utmost ease. Although this realm was unlike anything Buddy had known, he had no anxiety at all. He felt peace and love, and knew that everything was as it was meant to be.

The two could somehow communicate. The being explained to Buddy that his perseverance in life, his unwavering kindness and ceaseless hope, was to be rewarded. Buddy came to know of the cyclical nature of existence, and that as there was reason, everything made sense. That sometimes, one must live a hard life in order to learn great lessons. Buddy had learned the value of sacrifice: without his presence, the family that mistreated him would have directed their anger elsewhere.

Buddy became human. Ordinary at first, he lived a regular life of minimal suffering, but was, in time, named a saint of modern times. He reformed the worst criminals; he discovered the cure for cancer; he improved the justice system so no-one was treated unfairly; and he treated everyone who came into his life with respect.

One day, Buddy visited an aged care facility. He came across an elderly woman who told him a story of a random dog that found her on a harsh winter night when she was a homeless child. She said that although she had only known the dog for that night, that dog was her favourite friend and most pleasant memory. She recalled the name: "Buddy". Funnily enough, this was the saint's nickname, and for some reason, he cried tears of joy upon hearing the name for the millionth time.

The homeless child is female. Posting for visibility. Sorry for the mistake, I can't edit the post!

I think I tagged you separately for a special reason. You pointed out a mistake that I referred to the homeless child as he first and then later as she. You improved my writing, and reminded me I should read through my things carefully before posting. I hope it doesn't detract from the story. I also hope people read this comment!

Oh wow, that made me cry, so hauntingly beautiful, poignant and highlighting the value of light, the value of presence, the realness behind what cruelty and isolation can do to people. And one kind caress, smile, embrace can cut through the core and rehumanise that person. In this life the only commodity worth it's weight in gold is true love, true friendship and kindness, it's only with kindness and love that we will and can soar to new heights 🥰💜 Thank you for this @cyanessence, you wearing your heart on your sleeve and posting such accounts if vulnerability allows us all to tap into the harder emotions we run from and bring them into light 💜

Thank you for your kind review! I wrote it in public and had to hold back tears. For me, I had to accept the unfinished story for what it was for a time, which meant it was a terrible story for a moment. Just bleak and pointless. I got to the end as quickly as possible!

Ok so if this doesnt get published- it would be a real loss - more people need to hear this..

What I love about your writing is how you evoke love and kindness through your narration- I could feel so much tenderness inside me on reading about the dogs suffering - and how he met a friend who called him buddy was instantly healing, calming - the kind of relief we have all experienced when we are shown love in dark times... and how that love can transform a person to new heights as it happened with buddy and he began to understand the "bigger plan" behind his suffering.

I do believe - suffering is a way we can recognise and appreciate love - and find the power to give - suffering and healing is meant to be a training of the spirit so it can shine at its highest.

The ending took things on another level altogether- when the human buddy went to the aged care facility....and met the woman who had named the dog buddy ... it was a cute and happy feeling to see the re-encounter. Returning to the turning point that did the magic in his life - this time on completion of respective journeys - now he is going to repay her the love he received from her in his dog life ... (Although wasnt it a boy who named the dog and not a girl - am i missing something? Let me know)...

Im thinking about the relations between animals and humans, and humans and humans ..... how one can teach us to serve in the other.... this is such a powerful idea of our interconnectedness as living beings inspite of our differences ... youve taught me a lot . Thank you ✨️💛

Thanks for your kind words!

Yes, you picked up on an oversight. I referred to the homeless child as he when it should have been she. Part of the reason I post is so others can find things like that. You helped me out a ton! I don't often name characters so I can get a little lost.

Speaking of names, I will strongly reconsider renaming the story, but in line with all of my other stories, it would have to be "The Buddy". Though, there is a certain poetic feel to having just one story drop the "The". What do you think?

Yes if all your stories are starting with "The" stick to "The Dog". The symmetry looks beautiful that way.

Have you thought of a title for your book?

If I have to think of my feeling for you, the first word that comes to mind is Buddy. In fact the kind of presence you have on this forum I think a lot of people here connect with that equation.

It would be nice to see that title somewhere in your work as a symbol of your essence.

I am thinking of some titles for my works too. Got a few. Still debating on others. I'm a bit all over the place sometimes, sometimes I'm a bit more fine tuned.

Indeed on turning darkness into light. I like the ending part a lot, and especially the part with the child. As for the value of sacrifice... I feel like that really came into play the most for the dog and the child making a difference for each other. The family though, I'm not so sure... Sacrifices feed cycles of abuse too. People like that deserve consequences, but rarely get them.

@Torean @cyanessence it made me curious/ wonder about the future of the abusive family ... how their life unfold ahead.... did they change through some realisation ? Did they stay the same and what did that lead to? ..... maybe for another story to address

I was also curious about the life of the child who loved the dog... how did that act of giving and receiving love change their life...

@cyanessence @torean oooh.. what if the family was to realise through their own suffering that what they did to the dog was wrong.... and they went on their own redemption journey from there..... I guess i just desire to see happy endings everywhere ...

what if the familys child was about to die and was saved by a dog and that made them analyse their flaws --- I guess this theme has been shown in stories before....

im also wondering if animals are always kind? We know about the wild beasts attacking and killing innocent people .... even pets who were treated with kindness turn against their own good owners ....

So many directions your mind goes in - i guess that's what art does 💛

@Creamyyy I wondered about the family too, if they learned anything or grew from regret of having treated him that way.

If I want to keep a story short, I think a little mystery is necessary. I, too, thought of what happened to the family. I imagined that, without Buddy, they directed their anger at each other, grew tired of the chaos, and changed their hearts. Perhaps another dog saved them from some great harm and they all realised the value of kindness without expectation. Either way, lately, all my stories seem to have happy endings.

I like it when the reader fills in the gaps. This story raises many questions! Who really knows what happened to the family, or what the homeless child's life was like. That she made it to old age and Buddy was her happiest memory says something.

Sacrifice isn't inherently good. It can certainly feed cycles of abuse. The family was sacrificing Buddy, while Buddy was sacrificing his soul. The family and people like them definitely deserve consequences, and it made me cry that... I don't want to get into it! It is a happy story.

I hope one day the madness ends. No-one deserves what Buddy went through.

@cyanessence This story struck me in so many different ways. The dog continuing to offer love in the midst of horrible circumstances. The notion of sacrifice, that if he hadn’t been there to take their abuse someone else might have had to endure it, wow. 😳 The scene with the child giving him the love he deserved for so long has really stayed with me after reading a couple times. And then meeting again in “another life”, two kindred souls coming back together. This makes me think about all the positive and negative within suffering. It reminds me of wonderful people here who have been through such horrible things and somehow persisted in being the most beautiful beings. You have a beautiful gift of expression. Thank you for this. ❤️❤️

Thank you for your kind, kind words.

I wish none of us suffered. I don't like it at all. My heart really goes out to those who have or are struggling.

This story was actually one of the few that had some direction. Normally, I just write and make stuff up as I go, turn corners until I get utterly lost, then try to make sense of where I am. This one seemed fully formed before I wrote it.

@cyanessence Apologies for the delayed response, Cyanessence. I've been caught up with a few things and still am... so I’m not sure if this does justice to your incredible creativity — but I couldn’t read it without saying something.
This story moved me deeply — thank you for sharing such a powerful story. The pain was real but so was the hope. Buddy’s journey is a reminder that love even when brief or born in hardship, can leave an eternal imprint. The way you wove his quiet suffering into a legacy of light was breathtaking. From voiceless to saint — that arc is not just touching, it’s transformative. I’ll carry Buddy’s story with me for a long time. Also it reminded me of Jataka tales, cycle of birth and death, past life etc.
