Trolling: Mutual Responsibility! Here is how you can help!

Hello everyone!

Over the past few days, we have seen some trolling behaviors in the group support rooms, listener rooms and public forums. I know these can be unpleasant to see and participate in, but I wanted to provide some context to this and ask you all a special question.

Imagine someone comes to your neighborhood and starts acting in a way that is publicly disruptive and hurtful. As a neighborhood, you are going to rally together to figure out who did this, ask for help and report them to the police (if appropriate). It is the entire communities duty to remove disruptive and ugly behavior. Similar to real life communities, we are all responsible for 7 Cups. If you see something, say something & ask for help!

Mutual responsibility means that is it not one specific person's (or group of peoples) job to keep the entire neighborhood free from bad behavior, it's everyone's. This is OUR neighborhood and we all share the responsibility of taking care of it. I want to encourage you all to help.

If you see something, here is what you can do:

-----> Is it in a group support room? We want to encourage you to engage in the following behavior:

1) Ask in any of the listener chatrooms if a group mod can help.

- Review a full list of every group mod on this browse listeners page. Reach out to any that are currently available and ask for some help!

2) Stay in the group room and try to encourage a positive, supportive conversation to the best of your ability. Ignore this person and their behavior. Keeping the positive energy in the room up is critical!

-----> Listener chat room? We want to encourage you to engage in the following behavior:

1) Review the other listener chatrooms to see if a mentor (or teen star) is available to help.

- Review a full list of every chatroom mentor on this browse listeners page. Reach out to any that are currently available and ask for some help!

2) Stay in the listener chatroom and try to encourage a positive, supportive conversation to the best of your ability. Ignore this person and their behavior. Show others in the room that this will be okay and lead by example. Keeping the positive energy in the room up is critical!

-----> Is this behavior in the forums? Here is what you can do:

1) If you are a listener, ask in any of the listener chatrooms if a forum mentor is around to help.

2) Review a full list of every forum mentor on this browse listeners page. Reach out to any that are currently available and ask for some help!

Help us name a special badge to honor those who help out! All fun ideas welcome!

It is everyone's responsibility to help remove these behaviors and bad actors from our neighborhood. Anyone who helps to remove these behaviors from the neighborhood will have the opportunity to let us know and earn a special badge indicating their dedication to mutual responsibility and keeping our neighborhood loving, supportive, clean and compassionate!

Now...what should we call this special badge? Post your ideas and comments to this in this thread!

Thanks @Laura - I like something with the word "alliance" in it. Not sure what tho. I like to think of 7 Cups like a public park or shared common area. If I saw some bad guys picking on you at a park I'd roll over, stand by you, and push them back. I think we can all do the same here. We just need a good name for our anti-troll alliance :)

Awesome post @Laura !!! I think we should have something related to trolls under bridges or to do with the story of the troll and the Bill Goat Gruff... not entirely sure what, my creative mind isn't very good on this line though!

If you know the reference I'm making, then 'Billy Goat Gruff' or 'Billy Goat' would be quite cool! Anyway, badge ideas over!

Seriously though, let's stop these trolls and keep moving forward with our goals here! :D

Great post, and really necessary! Over the span of two days, I've talked to at least 2 people who were trying to troll one-on-one, and it's great the community is trying to do something about it! I was thinking maybe the badge can be something like the "Beautify the Community" badge or some other, because by trying to eliminate these people, we're helping the community be better and stronger!

Awesome post Laura! I think it was very informative and shows exactly what to do should this behavior happen.

As for badge name: Peace Keeper? Someone who comes into the chat to assist is there to help lead the chat back to the positive atmosphere it should be and peace keepers typically take on that role.

Peacekeeper: a person who maintains or restores peace and amity; mediator:

As @GlenM said, maybe we could do something like Peace Alliance? It is branching off the peace keeper thought above and I think it demonstrates 7 Cups well.

Any idea is good and I can't wait to see which one ultimately becomes the new badge.

Lets come together and bring our community back to what it was before the trolls! :D

I actually never saw the hunger games so I didn't know LOL

I think Glen had a really good concept by us being an alliance because ultimately, listeners have each others back regardless the situation and peace is for the fact that we are all here to make sure 7 Cups is a safe community for all who inhabits.

But with the Ally badge wouldnt it get repetitive to have an Alliance badge? Hmm

I definitely see what you're thinking. That's a good thought, maybe Neighboring Peace? To go off @RebeccaEmily's idea of neighborhood watch (which was a great idea). Each chat room is a house and we're the occupants trying to make sure everything is safe and tidy. LOL

these are just ideas, not sure if they're making sense or not but I thought i'd wear my creative cap today smiley

I think that idea covers all aspects of 7 Cups and brings all ideas together as one. Glad the situation was publicly addressed and I can't wait to hear of other possible ideas! :)

Since you were using "neighbourhood" as a metaphor, how about "neighbourhood watch" for the badge name? That's essentially what we should be doing! Looking out for yourself and others in the community.

I'm really glad that this post has been made! I already try to do all this, but some people just don't know what they should do in this situation. The clarification is really appreciated, and will hopefully help to make more people here aware of what they can do to help out! smiley

"Neighborhood Watch" is nice. It reflects community and safety - very appropriate for troll control - Oh! - I made a rhyme! "Troll Control", fun, but not friendly like "Neighborhood Watch"

I like that. To simplify terms Community Watch as the 7 cups community seems to be mentioned more than a neighbourhood - and there's only one English spelling!

As a group mod I have seen an increase of trolls the past day also as trolls in the forum, I dealt and report everything I saw and will keep an eye out for more! PS: For the badge ... maybe Dungon Keeper ? That sounds cool and appropriate since we are talking about trolls ;)

Great idea @Laura!

Also, isn't it great when we see members/guests taking control and dealing with trolls, unsupportive members and seeking mods where appropriate? The responsibility and support they show goes to show it's their wee home away from home too!

It makes me so happy :)

Great post. Dealing with trolls is a must! If you want to get creative I'd say Billy Goat Gruff is a good one. In keeping with the supportive nature of the site and badge names, Neighborhood Watch works fine too.

Fortunately, I think most us binge-users of the Internet have dealt with trolls before. It is not pleasant to stumble across a hurtful comment that is concentrated towards a subculture or person, nor is it necessarily nice taking responsibility to fend for the other(s). It is useful to note that these people do this for fun, and therefore are stubborn in nature - this is where the report button comes into play. The moderators will take care of the rest, in theory!

Also, I enjoyed a couple badge ideas—namely peacekeeper!
