Overview Video - Would Love Feedback!
People come to 7 cups when they are going through a rough patch. Part of what we are doing with this next version is we are making it easier for people to keep taking steps on their recovery path so they can get stronger. However, before people even start a chat, there are some issues we need to address in order to increase the chances that people continue to move forward and grow stronger. Here are the main issues:
1. People may have a good chat, leave, and then struggle again because the negative people and/or circumstances just weigh them down. They don't necessarily know that part of being healthy and growing stronger includes taking steps or practicing exercises daily.
2. People are anxious and don't know what to expect from the chat.
3. People get a less than awesome listener and do not realize that they can select another listener.
If we can address these 3 issues before a person starts a chat, then we increase the chances of helping them recover. The below video is designed to address each of these problems. It is long now, but imagine sections 1:13 - 1:24 and 2:52 - 3:03 being removed. So it'd be right around 3 minutes.
In terms of the flow of where you'd see the video - it'd work like this:
You come to the site and you have 2 options. You can click exercise or you can click chat. If you click exercise, then this is the first step on the exercise path. See the new design thread here for details. If you select chat, then you'd go to the private room just as you do now. Noni would then say, "Welcome to 7 Cups. We are looking for a listener for you right now. It'll take a few minutes. Please watch this brief video to better understand how 7 Cups works and how we can help you." Then, in the private room you'd see the video with a play button on it. You'd then hit play and the video would play. At the end of the video you'd be connected with your listener. This would only happen the first time you came to 7 cups.
Okay, here are some questions. Please give us honest feedback.
1. How do you feel at the end of the video? If you are in distress, and you watched this video, how would you feel at the end of it?
2. What do you like about it?
3. What don't you like about it?
4. Imagine if it was 20 seconds shorter with these sections cut (1:13 - 1:24 and 2:52 - 3:03), what do you feel about the length?
5. Would you watch the whole thing, let it play in the background and do other things, or leave?
6. What else should I know about this video that I didn't ask?
7. For ambitious folks - if you could split this video up into parts and reorganize it into a better flow so that all the best parts were covered - i.e., if we kept the intro part from 1 to 1:20, what other pieces/sections would you add to it? and in what order to make it the best it could be?
Thank you very much for taking the time to help out with this. The 3 issues outlined above are pretty challenging and we need all the help we can to figure this out.

1. How do you feel at the end of the video? If you are in distress, and you watched this video, how would you feel at the end of it?
I'm on the mixed feelings boat too. I like it but I can see it being too long and overwhelming for someone in distress. When I'm distressed I don't want to hear about how fun or easy something is. I don't want to hear about how I /will/ will feel either.
2. What do you like about it?
I like the narration, pace and art style. I think the mood it sets is just right and that it would be great for bringing people into the community. I love the diversity of people conveyed in this.
3. What don't you like about it?
The idea of being "forced" to watch it without an option to skip (it being optional would make me feel way better about it) and the length. I agree with @Stephanieo11o1 that the phrasing about not clicking with your first listen could sound off putting.
4. Imagine if it was 20 seconds shorter with these sections cut (1:13 - 1:24 and 2:52 - 3:03), what do you feel about the length?
I'd still feel it is slightly too long but I think the complete message is still conveyed with these pieces cut.
5. Would you watch the whole thing, let it play in the background and do other things, or leave? If I were distressed I would just leave but otherwise I would probably just let it play in the background if I'm honest. ): Depending on how overwhelmed I felt I may even be tempted to mute it.
With all that said, I think the video is great for people who are in the right mindset for it. For someone interested in learning more about the site or interested in self improvement it is great to have all of this information placed in an easy to access and fun to watch format, but I feel as though the amount of content could be overwhelming for another set of people.
1. How do you feel at the end of the video? If you are in distress, and you watched this video, how would you feel at the end of it?
I liked it! If I were in crisis and watching this video, I think I would sort of feel a little calmer, knowing that there are people able and willing to help me, however I think I would feel a little overwhelmed at all of the information being thrown at me. I'd feel better knowing what I can do in the future on the site to help me feel better as well such as using the growth path and using the forums etc.
2. What do you like about it?
It's very cute and informative. I love that it addresses some common issues that members experience such as not clicking with inital listeners, and providing the solution to find another listener. That's such a great idea. I love that it also shows the diversity of our community and the number of languages we provide support in and such. It's a very positive video and I love the idea of making videos in general as it's likely going to be seen by more people in this format, as increasingly more people would rather watch a video than read an article these days.
3. What don't you like about it?
The information is a little jammed together and it feels a little on the promotional side, like an infomercial. It almost feels like at the end, it's going to say, "Chat with your listener now for just 5 easy payments of.." Maybe I just watch too much TV! :P. I am also concerned about those who use the site privately or secretly. Those who live with spouses, roommates, children, parents, etc, they may not want a video like this being heard by anyone in the household if they are reaching out privately. What about the deaf community? The cartoons are great, however, without any captions, it's impossible to get the point. Watch the video without sound, and you'll see what I mean.
4. Imagine if it was 20 seconds shorter with these sections cut (1:13 - 1:24 and 2:52 - 3:03), what do you feel about the length?
The length is great, and the script actually works better with these sections cut. It would have to be cleaned up a bit to flow, of course, and maybe change a few words here and there that could be valuable from the missing script, otherwise it's great.
5. Would you watch the whole thing, let it play in the background and do other things, or leave?
Actually, the hand drawing the cartoon kept me watching the entire time. I'm not sure about if I were in distress and frantically looking to soothe myself, but I actually enjoyed watching the images unfold. It's a very nice idea!
6. What else should I know about this video that I didn't ask?
Just basically what I had mentioned about captioning previously. It's very hard to get the picture for those who are deaf or those who are trying to keep their use of this community private and I think it would be great if it would be possible to somehow incorporate that so all are able to enjoy.
I'm going to try and make this succinct
- I felt it was more promotional than welcoming
- It could show people literally what to expect and what to do when they get here. Many newcomers find the set up of 7 Cups disorientating.
- Perhaps if the tone of voice was less cheery, and more neutral, it may be more appropriately matched for the purposes of the site and how the person watching may feel (as a cheery voice may irritate them).
- Perhaps this may be improved also by showing a sample conversation.
- I wonder if instead of having cartoons of people, if there were genuine pictures of listeners included, it may prompt more enthusiasm to talk to a listener.
More points to come later, possibly.
Hey @GlenM,
Just my two cents! 0:21-0:25, the Listeners "grasping on" to the Member seems quite a strong almost too aggressive stance, in my opinion. Some people may see it in the wrong way, or find they don't like the "touching" even though that obviously doesn't even happen and I get you're trying to portray "support". That is the only thing I caught on, and obviously everyone can have their own opinion on this so just thought I'd throw it out there.
Lastly, the voice over, I was thinking it could be awesome to have a male voice swap lines equally with the female to give a "balanced and fair" feel to the video, as obviously we have tons of different genders that people relate to but having both male and female voices specifically could be quite awesome! As you have the mixed genders in the video.
Cheers, and I think this is amazing, it will definitely calm the nerves of the first-time users of our site!!
Nicely created video! I'm really happy that we're all working together as a community to do our best so that our members get the best experience possible!
Things I loved:
✔ the animation, the art was beautiful and made me smile.
✔ it was interesting and engaging
✔ the beginning was beautifully eloquent and very reassuring
✔ nice uplifting phrases, I particularly liked these:
→ It is perfectly normal to go through hard times
→ No problems are too small or too big
→ You are not at all silly for wanting to talk to someone about what's on your heart
→ We believe that each person, including you, is very valuable and deserving of care and compassion
Changes I'd make:
✩ the cheery tone was okay at the start, but as seconds passed, I got slightly irritated -- I'm always for positivity but I think the tone could be changed a little.
✩ too much information in one go; if I was in distress, I'd be even more anxious and upset over this
✩ I think it should have subtitles to accommodate to all needs
✩ after the first 1 and a half minutes, I wanted to close the video -- maybe only keep the first 1:30 for the first time the member comes to the site and the rest can be left for another time as it seems too promotional
I think it is a nice addition for members who know and like 7COT to explain 7 cups but may be too long and "promotional"
Cultural sensitivity. There are pictures of men and women reaching out to each other (ookay in US) and in the center 2 men side by side (side to side is better or even shaking hands. Face to face contact in some cultures is taboo.
cross legged sitting does not mean mindfulness or meditation. Most people cannot sit in half lotus in western countries. One in chair another just crosslegged would be better.
What about a non cartoon intro with a nice jpg of cups of tea like this
Maybe what we need is another video explaining to guests with screenshots what some one might see in their first chat. Many hangups could result from this first call shyness. You don't need to talk about the path until someone is a member.
So rather than one video to cover everything, some shorter videos with different focus and audience.
Nice addition.
Not about the video itself since I am HoH and didn't get what it was about, so I would add the option to have subtitles/CC so the Deaf/HoH folks wont feel excluded.
We will add those :)
It's great... But I think It'll be better if you decrease size of the video, now it's almost 40MB, not everyone has a high speed connection, specially in Third world countires, But Try not to decrease quality too much...
Thank you all for the very helpful feedback! I'd describe it as mixed. Some of you love it and some think it needs to be tweaked. Based on the feedback, we are going to ask them to create 2 more versions - both shorter than this current version. Additionally, we are going to have them do the voice over again in a more warm, authentic, and less commercial manner.
Thanks for taking the time to provide all sorts of feedback. Unfortunately, we, at this point, don't have the ability to do much more than what I outlined. Eg, we can't redo it with real people.
Fortuntely, right now we don't have a real video, so this will be a big step up. I'm hoping these next versions are even better. Then we'll figure out the best places for them.
Thanks again for the feedback!
[sighs] Another world map that drops my country off the edge of the world.. :)
(note: only partially serious as we get used to it here)
Really? Lol, I just checked your profile. Hello my fellow kiwi. I had an inkling but even so I say - Our country is pretty prominent these days, maps or anything XD
Another Kiwi.. woo hoo!
Sorry @Roadie - no harm intended!
lol.. don't worry.. it's common so I'm not worried about it :)
