The Way of the River: Paddling Together
Hello Community!
We are all on the river of life. We all hit rocks, or challenges, that can be difficult to overcome. And we paddle through those hard times together.
For a long time I've been working on a simple way to describe how we get through hard water here at 7 Cups. Many of you helped shape it through your posts, feedback, and stories over the years.
How this thread works: This is our home base on the river. Read through once, then come back anytime, every week, every day, or whenever you hit a rock, and share the rock you're facing and the paddle stroke you're taking. Jump to the last page to see where everyone is now.
Welcome
You belong here, just as you are.
You don't have to have it figured out. You don't have to be the strong one. You're welcome here because you're hurting, not in spite of it. Everyone here has hit rocks, and that's what makes us a community.
You don't earn your place by doing anything. You already have it. The paddle strokes below aren't a test. They're simply what we do together.

(You can take a screenshot of this or save the image for a reminder)
You belong here, just as you are.
You can't control the river.
You can choose how and when to paddle.
We are paddling alongside you.
Avoided rocks come back. Faced rocks change us.
Name. Say what the rock is.
Reach. Ask for help. Take the rope someone throws you.
Balance. Breathe, rest, let the feeling pass.
Face. Turn toward it. Ask what it might be teaching you.
Act. Take your next paddle stroke.
Let Go. Forgive, and release the outcome.
Give. Paddle alongside someone.
In rough water: Name, Reach, Balance.
Remember
Paddling away from danger is navigating too.
Some rocks are losses, not lessons. We can carry those together.
If you're in danger, get to shore. Reach crisis support now.
An easy way to remember the strokes
Navigating Rapids Builds Friendship And Lasting Grace
Each first letter is a stroke: Name, Reach, Balance, Face, Act, Let Go, Give.
Anyone who has rafted with others knows it's true: getting through rough water together makes you friends and aware of grace.
The Way
Life brings rocks, and some rivers are rougher than others.
We avoid them. We deny, blame, numb, or thrash.
Avoided rocks come back. We keep hitting the same kinds of rocks until we face them.
Facing rocks, with others beside us, changes us.
Wisdom isn't fewer rocks. It's spending less time on them, and more people we can help.
The Seven Paddle Strokes
Each paddle stroke has something you do, and a way it connects you to others.
1. Name
You: Say what the rock is in plain words. Challenges become a little easier to hold once we can put words to them.
Together: When we name a rock to someone else, we don't have to be alone with it anymore.
2. Reach
You: Ask for help. Take the rope someone throws you. Let someone in. This is the stroke we can come back to again and again.
Together: We heal through relationships before we heal through techniques. Sometimes we need someone simply to listen. Sometimes we need someone to remind us that we're not alone. Choose people who help you feel safe enough to be yourself and face what you're going through.
3. Balance
You: Stay upright in rough water. Breathe. Rest. Give the feeling time to move through you. You're the sky, not the cloud: feelings pass through you, but they aren't all of you. Look after the basics too: sleep, food, movement, and time to recover.
Together: Sometimes we borrow someone else's calm before we can find our own. Sitting beside a calm person can make the river feel a little less rough.
4. Face
You: Notice the rocks you've been trying not to see. Avoiding something isn't a failure; sometimes avoidance is how we survived something difficult. When you feel safe enough, begin to turn toward it. You can ask: What happened? What am I feeling? What do I need now? And, when you're ready: What might this rock be teaching me?
For some people, faith, God, a Higher Power, or a sense that Life can be trusted can be part of this. For others, meaning comes from somewhere else. There is no single way to make sense of what happens to us.
Together: Whatever you believe, you don't have to face the rock alone. We're paddling alongside you.
5. Act
You: Take your next paddle stroke. It doesn't have to be a big one. Maybe you need to solve something practical. Maybe you need to say, "I'm sorry." Maybe you need to set a boundary. Maybe you need to leave a situation that isn't good for you. The paddle is yours.
Together: Others can help you think it through. They can listen, help you see things differently, and cheer you on.
6. Let Go
You: Challenges often stir up old hurts and remind us of difficult past relationships. Forgive the person from your past that this brings up, forgive yourself, and forgive the person in front of you now. Forgiveness doesn't mean removing a boundary or staying somewhere that hurts you. A boundary can come first.
Letting go also means accepting what is, even when it isn't what we wanted, and loosening our grip on how we thought things should turn out. We can't control every bend in the river, but we can trust that, whatever comes next, we can meet it. You'll know you've let go when the old hurt doesn't catch you the way it used to.
Together: Letting go is easier when someone is paddling beside you.
7. Give
You: When you have the strength, paddle alongside someone else. You don't have to fix their problems or tell them where to go. Just be there. Share what the river has taught you when it might help. Listen when they need to be heard.
Together: Paddle with them, not for them. You can help others while still needing help yourself. That's how belonging grows.
How Belonging Grows
You belong from the moment you arrive. But the feeling of belonging usually grows in stages:
Uncertain. "Will I be okay here?"
Safe. "Kindness here is reliable."
Known. "I know names, and people know mine."
At home. "I'm glad I'm here."
Paddling alongside. "I help others find their place here."
Share where you are on the river
This thread is our place to paddle together. Come back anytime.
Rock: What you're facing (one or two lines is plenty)
Paddle Stroke: Which paddle stroke you're taking (Name, Reach, Balance, Face, Act, Let Go, or Give)
Beams/Prayers? Ask if you'd like them
Then reply to at least one other paddler. When you reply, paddle with them, not for them.
Big rocks and small rocks are both welcome. A flat tire counts!
If a rock shifts, reply to your earlier comment and tell us how it went. Add "OK to share" if we can someday share your story anonymously to help others find their way down the river.
I'll go first below!

Rock: I've been facing incredibly hard - and at times painful - challenges this year, which are testing my resilience, endurance, grit, and staying power.
Paddle Stroke: Reach - I have been allowing help into my life in many forms, and I keep opening my arms to receive it. It's okay to ask and to be vulnerable, and as I have paddled alongside many, especially on rough waters, I know they will do the same for me in the spirit of kinship.
Beams/Prayers? Both, please. Positivity, hope, and heartfelt wishes for good things to come very soon are all welcome. <3
@Heather225 I'm sorry this has been a hard and painful year for you.
Sending you prayers, beams, good vibes, light and love! 💜
@mytwistedsoul
Thank you, soul, you're such a wonderful person <3
@Heather225
sorry you having hard time here to paddled alongside to support you also
@stormieandpaws
We're in this together <3
rock is that all doors to make my dream come true are closed
I'm trying to escape the bubble that I've always lived in ,but nothing works , I fear I'll stuck here forever, I don't want that I want to be free but I can't right now ,fear is killing me , I should be young and happy but why am I not happy. I need someone who will talk with me but not once and then go I need someone who will help and talk with me like like a real friend
@vegatune
I'm sorry to hear you're feeling stuck. It's such a frustrating feeling. Here on 7 Cups, you've got a network of people to talk to, and I hope that you're reaching out. I see you're still fairly new to the site. If you have any questions about navigating the platform, feel free to DM me anytime. <3
Rock 1: Chronic illness. More specifically, the first respiratory / ENT infection of the season - a virus.
Paddle stroke: Reach. By posting here.
Beams: welcome.
Rock 2: Finances. How to earn a living with a chronic illness.
Paddle Stroke: Name.
Beams: Welcome.
@StrugglingPeach
here beside you i also have Chronic illness so can relate with you lots of things even doctors can only help a little but please keep going asking the hard questions too but here for you
@StrugglingPeach, I see you reaching out to others and supporting them in this thread. I think that speaks volumes about you. You are able to look out for others, even when going through some rough rapids yourself.
I know chronic illness can be very challenging, unpredictable, and like it is one rock after another. I'm curious if you have found anything that helps you and anything that maybe people recommend that isn't too helpful. A lot of people struggle with chronic illness and pain here. You seem to be a very thoughtful person so I'd welcome any insights you have here!
@StrugglingPeach
Peach, I am sending you all the beams to uncover ways to find financial support and prayers that this season is not a rough one. ✨🙏
@GlenM
Rock: Negative people and the old friendship
Name: Act. I put down my ego to connect with them.
Prayers: I like this: "Some rocks are losses, not lessons."
We keep hitting the same kinds of rocks until we face them. I faced it, but it wanted me back in my old version. Maybe I will pray for myself to stay strong in my new version.
I just read the thread today, and I really like the loss part; the rock happened to me recently.
@Minimum00
I commend your strength. Good job breaking away from negative cycles and friendships that don't serve you. I believe the new you is going to prevail. <3
@Heather225 Thank you for supporting ❤️ I love this version and your encouragement is something I appreciated.
@Minimum00 I think this is a very common rock as most of our challenges (and good things too) are connected to people. I want to make sure I'm understanding right. Are these folks negative and/or harmful to you? and is your act to stay relating to them even though they might be less than helpful?
@GlenM The rejection in silence, the isolated for many days, I didn't connect with them after the rock. Maybe it's time for me to move forward. They used to be like my current version but something had happened and changed.
@Minimum00 i think it is really wise to look at the effect people are having on you. i used to tell my kids if someone was positive and helpful, then you can make their circle bigger and draw them in closer. if a person is harmful, then you can shrink their circle and move it further away. boundaries are helpful!
Rock: Fear of failure. When I get things wrong I feel like I have failed.
Paddle stroke: Face as I tend to avoid difficult situations. When I get things wrong I start to get frustrated and avoid hearing what I did wrong or what I need to do to correct my mistake.
Beams/prayers: Beams
Thank you.
@Harmony8682
Hi, Harmony. <3 Failure is a part of the human experience. It only becomes true failure if we give in to it. We can never win if we never try. I know the failures can stack up (I've been living this reality all year) and cause anxiety, but I hope you can take comfort in knowing that even the most capable, knowledgeable people make mistakes.
Try to go easy on yourself. Sending you beams. ✨✨✨
Thank you for the kind words 🙂
@Harmony8682 this is very courageous of you! and one of the harder things I think it is for us humans to do, so big kudos to you! really nicely done!
one thing that helps me with this is that I know that I'm going to get a lot of things wrong and make mistakes just because I'm human. if i know this, then it makes it easier for me to accept my mistakes and then quickly apologize when I do b/c there just flat isn't another option!
what helps you face things and then grow through the challenges / mistakes?
Thank you for the advice 🙂
@GlenM
Rock: my kidney test came back with a bad result this with other health issues is making me overwhelmed and scared
Paddle Stroke: Which paddle stroke you're taking
Reach right now i asking for help from doctors and support from others
Beams/Prayers? yes both due to i not know what others believe for me prayer big part of life
@stormieandpaws
I am so sorry to hear about the results not being good. I am praying for you, stormie, that you get the best care and solutions that turn things around. Thank you for being honest with all of your community family here, and continue sharing and keeping us posted. <3
@Heather225
think the hardest parts is that i have no one to help when i end up having to have surgerys so i end up going alone same when i have tests done too i just know offline i mostly alone

@Heather225
thank you health stuff really getting to me truth is i angry as lot of the health stuff due to the abuse seems ones who abuses others go on with their life like nothing happened but ones who been abused have to deal with effects of the abuse most for many years
@stormieandpaws thinking and praying for you stormie and sending love your way!
@GlenM
thank you
@stormieandpaws I'm so sorry to hear this Paws. Will definitely keep you in prayers! Sending lots of love and healing vibes ❤️
@mytwistedsoul
thank you been very hard for many years with all the health stuff
@GlenM
Beams or prayers? Yes, please! I'll take all the beams and prayers!
I will take the prayers to be behind me in making my life a pleasant one
@pamharley003
You deserve the best, Pam. <3

@Heather225
I do deserfve it need to work on not being my worst enemy and loving myself
@pamharley003 praying for you to have a pleasant season! let us know if there is anything else we can keep in mind.
@GlenM
Thank you spent a pleasant 4 days in virginia beach with relatives. It is always good being surrounded by family
I've written something for this at least a half dozen times the past few days. 😅
I really had to give this some thought, because tbh, I thought I was the rock, standing in my own way but I've realized that the rock is - Grief.
I am grieving many different things. I don't talk about any of it to anyone. I thought it was a fear of vulnerability (which maybe a little?) but mostly I just feel like why would anyone else care (there's reasons) and I feel like I should be over all this now.
Reach - admitting I'm struggling and posting here.
Could use some beams and good vibes please.
@mytwistedsoul
@Amanda84 Thank you! 💜
@mytwistedsoul
relate to what you said many times we think we should be over the effects of the abuse but remember healing a journey with no time limit at all so it on to not be ok i do care about you and can relate to you on many things you do matter
@stormieandpaws Thank you Paws ❤️ Sometimes I think it would be easier to have a time line. To be able to say that by (insert date) we'll be healed. I know healing also isn't linear but there are times that it feels like we're just keep circling the same issues over and over.
@mytwistedsoul
i can relate fully and yes seems that way at times but each time in right way going one step at a time even when it seem like we repeating steps we healing more healing a journey not a set time to be healed you matter
@stormieandpaws Thank you! I think I needed to hear this. It's a little easier to accept having someone who understands. It makes the repetitive steps a little easier to deal with.
@mytwistedsoul
Resilience is what psychologist Ann Masten calls “ordinary magic” [1], not a rare personality trait but the activation of adaptive systems most people already have. It draws on three ordinary capacities:
- Cognition, the ability to reframe events and plan next steps.
- Social bonds, trusted relationships that provide support and perspective.
- Self-regulation, managing emotions without suppressing them.
this website might be helpful thought i share that part the link to find out more is
https://goalsandprogress.com/building-resilience-bounce-back-setbacks/
seem you and me have most this but it can be hard to heal from things even if we bounce back from them fast but remember we do heal over time also no one can set that time for us at times not even the person doing the healing but it our resilience that got us through so much
Great reminder!
@stormieandpaws Thank you for this Paws. I'm slowly making my way reading through the link you gave. I do the reframing but I do need to build some trusted relationships and emotions have been more difficult because they disappear.
@mytwistedsoul
your welcome it ok to not be there fully i not either the emotional side i still struggle with big time but it a journey of becoming better with it over time to not believe the lies we been told to learn to let go of what others told us either we was or how it all will ever be it about growing over time as we heal i see you growing and trying to be a better person even with all you been through that what important not having it all right now but working learning new skills and applying them to your life
your not alone
hugs if your ok with them
@GlenM I think balance is good in life and a must have for everything.
@affectionateShade7072
Agreed! How are you doing with finding your balance, if I may ask?
@GlenM it's like destiny, most of the things that come to us are unexpected and put of out control, but what is in our control is how we react on it!
