Seeking Help

Mental stress can cause us not to be able to see the good things in life and lead to excessive rumination or worries which can result in serious health problems. If you have serious, long-term problems with negative thinking and feeling depressed, see your doctor or talk to a therapist if they are related to any mental challenges.

Reading allows me to park my problems, and to transport myself into a better world, one that I created. I love reading romance 🥰

I’m reading a book right now. The book I am currently reading a book that deals with a mental health issue. I also read romance novels when I just want to relax. Sometimes it’s hard to concentrate, but lately that hasn’t been a problem for me.

Educating yourself is good. I like that you also just read something to relax!

I have mixed feelings about reading.

Right now it's helping me sleep. It allows me to block the self torturing thoughts so I can relax enough to sleep.

But reading is also partly to blame for those self torturing thoughts. Romance novels paint an idealistic view of love that led me to have unrealistic expectations, and then resentment when my partner couldn't meet those expectations. In real life a partner doesn't know what you feel or what you want by instinct. Real life is a lot more messy.

@Clio9876

I hear you Clio. It might help some people to relax when they read books that paint a perfect picture of relationships, but it can give a bitter aftertaste when you know it's not reality and it requires a good amount of input from both sides. Reading funny stories can be more helpful.

I like factual stories. People who have succeeded despite the messiness of life can be very inspirational.

@soulsings

I'm thinking there is maybe a typo in your comment. Is there a "m" missing? If so, that's a kind comment. It's pleasing to hear I'm missed. Unfortunately the discussion times are really late for me. Normally I'm asleep before then. And if I'm not, I fall asleep during the discussion! 😴

The last book I read over the last few days was printed in France in the 1930s and described social rules of most countries. Before this, a biography of George Washington dating back from the 1920s, calling him "An American Gentleman". I loved all those outdated books because they also show how people thought at the time and how much trouble they went into to describe anything in a literary way. We are more direct nowadays, put more effort in research, notes, bibliographies and so on.

Most of what I read is non-fiction. History, religions, popularized science... It's very much the same on video documentaries, even if I am caught by a cute bird video or a baby elephant getting smacked by its mum.

When I was young, I read hundreds of novels. This is actually why my English or Spanish vocabulary grew so fast then.
