Living well as a sensitive person

User Profile: amiablePeace77

Sensitive people tend to experience pleasure more deeply, can be very empathic and pick up on things that others might miss. However, they are also more prone to overstimulation.

New research from the University of Surrey has found that highly sensitive people are at greater risk of developing mental health problems. This is due to the fact that sensory information is more deeply processed, making them more easily overwhelmed and overstimulated. The review revealed a consistent association between sensory processing and elevated levels of stress in adults.

Good self-care is important for everyone but especially for sensitive/highly sensitive people

Seeking Help

Mental stress can cause us not to be able to see the good things in life and lead to excessive rumination or worries which can result in serious health problems. If you have serious, long-term problems with negative thinking and feeling depressed, see your doctor or talk to a therapist if they are related to any mental challenges.

Hi, Ami

I feel that way when I start new classes in a new semester.  My emotions explode all at once and I am overwhelmed.

@purpleTree4652 that can be a pressured feeling facing the unknown of what classes are like.

@amiablePeace77 When do you feel that you need to withdraw into your room to have some solitude and privacy and relief from stimulation?

When I am tired I just want to go to my room to have a short nap. The same thing when I am around a lot of people.

@soulsings

I hear you soul. Tiredness and too much stimulation create the need to withdraw for me too.

When I feel stressed, tired, burned out from doing a lot of work or when I talk a lot to people without becoming aware of myself.

I hope you can schedule regular self-care in future to prevent burnout. Burnout can negatively impact the body in so many ways.

I am a highly sensitive and empathetic person. I have a tendency to overthink and carry the issue for days which is bad for me. Whenever i am forced or underestimated or misunderstood or attacked i shut down and drift off to a dark place

Going into a dark place when feeling overwhelmed sounds really rough! I hope the self-care habits discussed in the video and the other resources will help to stay balanced.

Too much noise for too long. I do not last long at parties. Never enjoyed nightclubs, need breaks watching movies, even if there is no violence displayed. The only exceptions are (classical or folk) concerts.

When do you feel that you need to withdraw into your room to have some solitude and privacy and relief from stimulation?

@Fradiga

I can relate with what you said about noise, it makes me run away lol. Nice though that you can still enjoy classical or folk music, even if a little louder. It seems our brains make exemptions! 😃

When do you feel that you need to withdraw into your room to have some solitude and privacy and relief from stimulation?

I'm experiencing this as exactly this moment. I asked for space. I was called out and mocked at a public event. It hurt me deeply. So, moments like these!

Hugs trueconfidant123! So sorry this happened. Sadly, many people do not understand what it means for a sensitive person to need space.

Thank you so much for making such a great post! I know when I start getting irritated to the point where I don't want to talk to or see anyone. Where every craft or hobby is irritating me. I only let myself stay for a day or two. I know from a history with bed rotting that it isn't good for me to stay in my room for long. I'm currently on my second day of working from bed :)

@SelfCareMatters

I agree with you, staying in bed too long often makes is worse. How does going for a walk or doing some gentler aerobic exercises work for you?

Everyday, 24/7 bc my room as well as myself are my biggest sanctuaries from stimulation or overstimulation.
