Being mindful with sugar

User Profile: amiablePeace77

Sugar can negatively impact brain health, especially when consumed in excess. It can affect mood, behavior, and cognitive performance.

Do you think you eat and drink too much sugar? If so, how could you reduce it?

Drinking fruit juice you can get almost as much sugar as soda. I stay with tea  and water.

@amiablePeace77 I definitely consume too much sugar, and I am aware of this. Even though I have been stopped drinking soda (to cut back on the sugar), I still have not been able to cut out drinking orange juice and sweet tea. I consume a cup of sweet tea at least once daily and I can go through a container of orange juice (just by myself) within 5 days. I know I need to cut back though. I also enjoy eating snacks when I have a sweet tooth, although I am a big food person over junk. Even though, I consume sugar since it's in almost everything I eat or drink... the good thing is my sugar levels are usually within the normal range and my A1C is normal.

@YourCaringConfidant

Glad to hear that your blood sugar levels are okay so you can still enjoy occasional treats! Unfortunately, many processed foods today contain either a lot of sugar or a lot of fat so I like to read food labels very thoroughly.

Do you think you eat and drink too much sugar

Not at the level that I used to when I was a lot younger. Once I realized how negatively it was affecting me I disconnected myself from it completely for a couple years. Since then I’ve brought it back but consume it minimally.

If so, how could you reduce it?

I reduced it by only buying 1-2 things and using them as a treat or a reward that I only have once I’ve earned the right to like for example if I clean up my place today and it’s cleaned like I planned it to be then after that I can have 1 sugar treat as a reward. Or after I help someone out with whatever they needed help with I can reward myself with a treat. In this instance these sugar snacks or drinks gives me more motivation than I need to keep living the way I’ve always lived. Do I need more motivation to do that? No. But at the same time it sure doesn’t hurt to have more motivation either.

Good that you stay away from sugary drinks, they can be a real trap!

No. I consume sugar in moderation. I only use sugar in my coffee, once or twice in a week. I plan to replace that with jaggery powder. My sweet treats either have dates or jaggery.

@trueconfidant123

I have dates as treats too but also prunes. Some people say they help with arthritis, not sure though. I had to look up jaggery powder, seems to be a much healthier alternative to white sugar. Thanks for teaching me something new!

I can't find prunes here. I wish I could try them out.

You're welcome! 🤗

@amiablePeace77

I used to live off of soda (Mountain Dew) and snack cakes. When I married my wife (now ex-wife), I told her the only person I would have an affair with was Little Debbie.

A few years ago, I decided to cut back on my sugar. I stopped drinking sodas (maybe one on a special occasion) and limit other sugar intake (Monk fruit for the win). Sadly, I am hypoglycemic so I can't cut sugar completely out. I keep little dark chocolate bars nearby in case my blood sugar drops.

@courageouspanda2006

Smiling about Little Debbie (and all the treats! 😮)

Cutting out the sodas is a great idea! Sodas contain a number of ingredients that can negatively impact the body. Good idea to have something readily available when your blood sugar level drops! I hope you're doing okay though.

I do drink too much sugar in soda.  But I am using the caffeine to push  me through when I am working on homework.

Soda is very popular but maybe something to consider reducing in future. Tbh I need my cup of coffee too, sometimes even 2 cups (small cups), it helps with focus but more than 2 cups can provoke the opposite.

@Tinywhisper11 *looks around* What icecream? I didn't see anything. The funny thing is I am literally eating a FatBoy 🍦 sandwich right now. 😂 I was going to snap a pic and attach it... but was like let me stop and not do this. I'm so happy everyone can calm it down on sugar. I like my sweets right now. 🫢

We stopped adding sugar to our coffee…it truly made a difference. Also, stopped using anything with high fructose corn syrup. That isn’t easy but it can be done!
