@soulsings My home has been under construction the last few years. But what I love about it is the location, on the side of a small mountain, some beautiful views of the country. It’s in a good location, not too long a drive to a couple nice towns/cities. The house doesn’t have to be huge, it is enough to meet my needs. I’m also blessed to have some really nice neighbors who watch out for me and my family.

What’s the best thing about your home and surroundings?
My room overlooks a beautiful botanical garden. My primary interest in gardening started after I moved in my current apartment. I love sitting by my window and tree watching especially in the rains. The sight is phenomenal. I remember a vivid scene from the last sand storm. The flowers from a beautiful Bougainvillea tree were strewn all over the street and it melt my heart.

What I think is the best and what my guests think is are totally different things.
Memories of the people who were there when I was little, working wood stoves, scents from the yard, location both in-town and out in the country, bird songs, people visiting casually, history, a 17th century clock which still tells the time and rings hours and half-hours - those are what are the best according to me.
Other people look at this place as historical, because it's almost 300-year old, it has a huge yard with a huge tree, plenty of bedrooms, old furniture, a 3-section granite staircase and they call it a castle (it's really just a big townhouse). They also enjoy the stories about the place. They get used to the café culture and the fact that everyone knows everyone else. Dogs and cats everywhere, green hills visible from any point in the place, cattle and horse out there, the rivers and creeks, plenty of bicycles available and the vicinity of even better places
Birdsongs here are much louder because of the resonance. All enclosure walls and buildings are made out of stone (quarried over 1000-years ago when the village needed ramparts and repurposed from the 17th century when ramparts were not needed anymore) and those stones amplify the sounds outside. Thanks to my sister's work since the 1970s, the yard is very natural and well maintained.

@Fradiga you brought up such a good point - memories of people who lived there --- love is such a binding factor - people pass away but the places they lived in still carry their reminders and it gives solace to those who loved them.

Frankly I'm not happy about where I live. The place is over populated, over polluted. And it's missing the things I truly love - nature! Especially lakes or oceans. Had I not seen better maybe I won't feel this way but I have ....
In terms of people too , I have mixed feelings. People here are lovely and touching, and some are not so kind... but that's probably how it is anywhere in the world. So I don't have a particular affiliation with being here.
Plus i didnt choose this place to be my abode either. Circumstances made me an inhabitant here.
That being said..... it's still the best place to be in ... because it's given me a chance to develop values and build character. I couldn't have acquired these lessons at another place. And I do love how I am growing. So for that I'm grateful for everything that contributed to it - including my not-so-perfect surroundings.
