What Is In Our Food?

User Profile: soulsings
soulsings October 15th, 2025

Depending on what you eat, how much you eat, and how long you eat it, food can have both positive and negative consequences. Labels on food offer important safety information, such as storage and cooking instructions but also about ingredients in the food. Neurotoxins found in food can impact your cognitive function. You can find more information here and here.

  • When you buy food, do you read the labels?

I always do soul and if there is too much salt or unhealthy sugars or neurotoxins in it I would not buy. Tbh I rather buy as simple as possible, not processed.

@amiablePeace77 I try to make most of my food from scratch so I control what goes into it.

I like the food to be locally sourced and to know it's origins 💕💜

No, but I buy a lot of veggies and fruit and drink a lot of tea.  I would bet my food is 2/3 healthy and 1/3 not.

@purpleTree4652 one thing I do is see how I feel after I eat food. Binging on food and feeling awful is no fun so I cut out things that do not make the boedy feel well and celebrate the ones that make the body feel well.

Unfortunately, I am a big fan of soul foods. Good for the soul but terrible for your body.  😂

@soulsings

It is not only important to read the label but understand what you are reading.

examples are serving size if a bottled drink it that one or two servings .... if 2 the label is based on 1 serving ... so looks low but you have to double it for the real #'s

@toughTiger6481 some vitamins are based on muliplt tablets.  Some packages are less expensive but have less content. Labels tell a lot.

@soulsings

It depends if the food is new to me and where I am buying it.

The labelling can be quite different from country to country, except in the European Union.  Some countries are better than others about freshness, food inspections and expectations.

When buying fresh food (meat, fish, cheese, fruits and vegetables, the signage here in France tells you exactly where it comes from and in season, it is very local, like within 50 km (30 miles) from the store, even if it is a chain supermarket. So... if you buy melon in April, it will come from Morocco, Spain in May-June and and area of France in July-August.

As long as I do not buy multi-ingredients food, there is no need to look at labels. I might look at it because price is a factor as well.

The famous French escargots have not been from the region of Bourgogne for a long time. They come from Eastern Europe now.

When I was living abroad, I used to make my own mayonnaise or béarnaise sauces. I've always made my own salad dressings because what I will use depends on the type of lettuce or baby greens.

@Fradiga you are doing wonderfully making your own foods from locally produced food as much as possible.

In US produce is available year round but often in winter is shipped in from South America. I try to get locally as uch as possible.

@soulsings For many years I never did read labels Apparently tho 9 years ago my granddaughter was born she can not have eggs peanuts and other things therefore it has forced me to read labels. When I buy stuff it would be for her and I and every so often my daughter will alert me of certain ingredients to look out for so its been helpful.
