The person whom should care the most and motivate you is .... you...

being healthy for you.......

I tried losing weight or doing other things because other people wanted me to or said they were here for me ect ............but i hated every minute of it ......felt like a chore no one wanted to do.... and never worked ....... when i chose ME and did for ME i lost i maintain the loss and i do not need reassurances because i have got my back.

Real change in me, came when i did things for myself regardless if i had other to cheer me on .......

With me being my own accountability ...me being my own cheerleader etc... my own person to deal with if i did not feel like doing my routine or wanted to eat junk..... I faced it all and found strength i did not know i had in other things as well.

I am so sorry you are going through that, it must be so difficult. That feeling when you know you're heading down a bad path and yet you feel powerless to do anything to change it... it is a freeze response, where your body is stuck in executive dysfunction, and yet there's very little you can do to change it. I want you to understand that there *are* ways to drive your body out of that state.

Please feel free to reach out if you would like to chat 1-1. And you are not alone.

I have often felt the same. I can only tell you several of us here have been exactly were you are now.

Walking has helped me. It's not hard, and if you keep at it long enough you can both look better and more importantly see some improvement in your depression.

Take some time and let me know if you would like to chat.

Believe me.. I have people. I have even a partner to encourage me but NOTHING makes me want to get up and exercise either. Unfortunately it is only up to us as individuals and nobody else.

It's okay if nobody else cares about your story... simply because nobody does.

Think about it. Even if you feel like you're alone, that might mean it's just your chance to shine, your chance to get better. Who cares if no one cares about your progress? You're not doing it for other people, you're doing it for yourself. Remember that. Think about how many benefits there are to this.

Yes it will be hard to wake up and think "ohh i have to do this i have to do that" but hey, at least you have things to do. You constantly get the chance to move, you constantly have the opportunity to have a life.

Exercising really leads to a few things: socializing and maintaining your health (whether physical or mental). Exercising is known to release endorphins ("happy" hormones) and can help you physically maintain your body weight, regulates your thyroid, helps with constipation (homeostasis/internal balance in the body), etc. It's also a great way to connect with people. Say you're at a gym and you don't know how to use a machine. You either search it up or you get up and talk to someone about it. Another way is say you're exercising at home. You don't know how to do an exercise or you're trying to pick out the right food to eat after exercising. You go ahead search it up or you talk about it. Say you're swimming at a community pool or even your own pool. You find friends and talk about swimming or something else other than that.

Exercise is also a great way to keep discipline because you know you have it planned already that certain days and times you have to go and exercise.

Think about it; exercise is just the smallest step to a million other steps, like a shot that kills 5 million birds.

It's your choice to give up on yourself or to keep going in life.

You're confronted with huge challenges and I wish we could take the pain away from you but we can't. We are here for you though to listen and to support you. Here is a link to a post which might be helpful even if the situation is different, it's more about the thoughts connected to pain. https://www.statnews.com/2019/08/12/chronic-pain-journey-five-things-understand/

I hope there will be something soon that will help.

@CosmicCourtney (Sending this again here, just so you can see it)

Hello, Courtney- I just read your message that you have severe back pain from surgery can barely walk, and are unable to lay flat on your back. I am so sorry to hear that. How is it doing now? Based on how much pain you are feeling, I definitely want to adjust my recommendations promoting resistance exercise. Before you do anything, you should try some physical therapy exercises. Here is a link that may help: Low Back Surgery Exercise Guide. These exercises are not just for weight loss purposes, but also to reduce pain and stiffness over time, maintain/build key muscles, and stabilize you.

As you work your way through the physical therapy exercises, there are definitely alternate methods to raise your metabolism and lose weight in a healthy manner:

- swimming pool walking

- Stationary biking (if your doctor approves)

However, it seems that at this time, stretches and static holds are the most important! Another link to some good stretches and explanations: https://www.spine-health.com/treatment/physical-therapy/guide-physical-therapy-after-spinal-fusion

Good luck!!

today i quit all drinks that have any type of sugar in them. maybe that will help some... dieting for me has to be a slow burn, going all in at once will just make me fail. im thinking small subtle changes to eventually get to where i want...

Quitting all sugary drinks is a great step! And I agree, step by step, you will get where you want to be. If you make too many changes at once, it is easy to burn out. But if you incorporate 1 habit at a time, it may be easier to stick to it.

@Gilbird is it true that if you dont sleep well and are stressed out, you wont lose any weight?

@CosmicCourtney

It is possible that you may lose some weight since weight loss happens when (calories in) - (calories out) is a negative number. However, lack of sleep in combination with stress often slows down one's metabolism, which makes it more difficult to burn calories when you're resting.

One way to combat this is to strength train. This is also known as resistance training. Whether you choose to do bodyweight strength training (push-ups, crunches, squats) or weighted strength training with dumbbells/exercise machines, you need to be consistent and follow a short workout that you enjoy. Strength training will increase your muscle mass, increasing your metabolism. Additionally, strength training creates a molecule called adenosine, which tends to cause drowsiness. A combination of resistance training and aerobic exercise (cardio) has also been shown to lower levels of stress hormones.

Furthermore, a study has shown that sleep efficiency (the total amount of time you spend asleep when you’re in bed) increases for those doing resistance training or a combination of resistance and aerobic exercise.

So to answer your question, try out resistance training to increase your metabolism, increase sleep quality, and over time- lower stress levels. (: Best of luck!

I’m so sorry to hear that. I can see why you’re feeling frustrated. It must be difficult to lose weight through just modifying your eating habits, especially when you’re forced to be mostly sedentary and in constant pain.

Has your surgeon said anything about the pain you’re experiencing and how you’re unable to lay flat? And if you are able to stand up against a wall or sit in a chair, perhaps you can ask your surgeon about some modified PT exercises you can do in those positions?

I hope you’re not too hard on yourself. You’re going through so much and the road to recovery looks like it may be difficult, but you sound very motivated and eager to do what you can. I hope you can regain more functions soon and then step by step, progress in the direction you want (: you’re doing great so far, you really are.

@CosmicCourtney. I can’t walk for long periods or do aerobics either. I walk 3 minutes inside my house a few different times a day. I take a long rest break in between my 3 minute walks. Are you able to do small walks with big rest breaks in between? Btw cutting out sugary drinks is a great idea!
