Traumatic Experiences Community Daily Check-in Thursday 28th September 2017
Greetings to you all!
(And now looking round for the scraps of paper on which various ideas/thoughts are written... i am an inveterate scribbler ) Ah found! so here we go. The quote for today comes from Dr Wayne Dyer. Some of you may know of his writng and the wonderful wisdom that he has left us with..
Now is really all there is,and the future is just another present moment to live when its arrives.
So how do we live in the "now"? So often thoughts and anxiety drag us away from this ..it may be something enjoyable but we can get caught up in wondering or worrying about how long this will last, and so we lose the enjoyment of this precious moment. To be present in the now requires us to "be" rather than to "do" and we are very good at doing, less so at being.
And that brings us to mindfulness.We've all heard of this. Siegel (2007) says, When we are being 'mindful' we are bringing focused non-judgemental awareness to our experience. And there is growing evidence supporting mindfulness in better processing trauma and decreasing potential suffering from PTSD. It is said that over time mindfulness meditation builds more connections between areas of the brain, slows down reactivity, and increases the sense of the body as a whole.
There's many ways and oppotunities to learn how to be mndful. But its not a one size fits all. For some to sit for a long period of time may be soothing, for another, it may be distressing.. So its important that it fits with your learning style and tolerance level. And to begin with a shorter time, and then increased.There are benefits to be had, and like most things, the more practice, the more we benefit.
How is your day going? Do you want some support? What is you experience with mindfulness.. is it helpful? What would you say to someone considering this as a way of dealing with trauma? Love to hear from you. This is your space and a safe place. x
Good morning everyone. I have been doing a lot better and have been so busy the last two weeks or so that I haven't had a chance to visit.
My experience of mindfulness is that it might just be the single most helpful thing I have ever found for learning to be myself and to cope with how I am really feeling, mentally and physically. Most of the help I need for my illnesses I can't get on my own, I need a therapist. But this is one thing I really can do for myself. But it is hard to begin with or after a break. Because it is scary to sit with your own feelings and thoughts without the distractions I usually use to keep myself away from pain. But it is really something that I feel is helping me learn to be my real self. I recommend Jon Kabat Zinn and his MBSR program as a good place to start if you are going to google. There are a lot of things online especially on YouTube that are less than helpful but he is really good and a safe place to begin if mindfulness is new for you.
Today I am struggling again with something that has been a problem for weeks and weeks for me. I am going to an art class, which is really good for me for many reasons. So far I have been sketching in pencil and now the teacher wants me to begin in colour. So I need to buy coloured pencils. I have been trying to do this for a very long time anyway. But the main brand here is a trigger for me and everytime I walked in the shop to buy them and try to overcome this feeling I would end in tears. From trying to do it so many times it has become a really big obstacle, it was already hard but now it is worse. I bought a different brand the other day and then I cried so hard in the middle of town that I had to take them back to the shop. Because if I buy the first brand everytime I use them I will think of the tigger, but if I buy the others I am worried that everytime I see that mark I will know I only have them because I am too ill to buy the others. I told this to my nurse and she said that I was being too strict with myself, it was okay to be kind to myself and buy the other brand. But I sat in front of my laptop this morning to do it and I ended by crying again. I want someone to sit next to me and tell me that it is okay while I do it.
PTSD sure makes simple things hard. I am feeling very fed up or this now. The nurse said it was okay to buy the other brand, without the direct trigger, and that I shouldn't feel bad because it is not necessary to fight with myself all the time. But I am worried that I made a connection in my head now and I can never use colours. There is one person who can always say something to make me feel better about these things. But he is ill too and he is too tired for me to bother him about this now. I am crying while I write this because I am so frustrated about trying to get on with my life and how something so small can disrupt me so much.
@Kuma0187 Hey Kuma, Good Morning it's nice to see you today. :)
First off nice work on the mindfulness. For me I find when I psyche myself out of doing something it's because my thinking at the time was "I'm gonna d this, BUT this might happen..." I find for me the addition of BUT adds the possibility it will happen as it's in my focus. I found that removing the BUT from my thinking and just focusing on "I want to do this. <---<Period!", I am more definitively focused and do as I intended without any buts interupting. Perhaps this shift in technique could help?
@Raveninthelabrynth
Thanks for posting this. I just heard very similar findings during a symposium. Many are finding that these simple shifts/techniques can help. It takes time and practice for them to become habits. Once habituated, they are like most coping mechanisms. One more to draw upon is a positive step.
@Raveninthelabrynth I think you are right. I have cut and paste your comment into a note I will see in the morning and I will really try this to see if it works. Thanks :)
@Kuma0187 My Pleasure Kuma I hope it works well for you. :)
@Raveninthelabrynth
Like this one Raven, and it seems to have hit a chord with others. Makes me think of looking through a slightly different lens which can make all,the difference! x

@rozie Still feeling off, but had a much better sleep, thankfully, so I'm going to be kind to my brain (because mental exhaustion deserves and demands compassion and care) and not strain for grand insight. I will simply say that undertaking regular mindful practice has helped immensely in my journey. While no panacea, practice does make for an anchor to the here and now, which is vital during those moments when you feel like you're drifting aimlessly.
On a personal note, as intimated, am again having difficulty managing today, for a variety of reasons (including anniversaries). That doesn't negate the efficacy of mindfulness; rather, it affirms my humanity with all its struggles and imperfections. Emotions may just be visitors, but sometimes they are most unwelcome, and those ones tend to linger far beyond the bounds of social propriety. 😂
Seriously though, could use a little extra support. ❤️
@melliotm
Well said, Mellio. I was at a loss for words and then they appeared. I would never assume to know how you feel or what you have been through. I guess I am just too numb at the moment to express myself well. I hope you don't mind if I reiterate your feelings.
I love that you are being gentle with yourself. I also respect your ability to stop pushing. I always feel as though anniversary dates are fleeting and if I don't push they will again be lost ~ only to return with the same impact. I am wrong about it in many ways, but am also tired of the cycle at this particular time. So many years of reliving the moment is beginning to wear on my psyche.
Thank you for reminding me how similar the process can be and realize support is just a computer click away.
Take care of yourself today.
@Compassionatelistener108 I'm glad my words struck a chord with you 😊 ❤️ x Thank you and solidarity in your journey.
@melliotm
Much wisdom. Oh, especially about those silly emotions and how they hog the bathroom during their stay! You don't own the place emotions!
*fluffs pillow and gives stuffed animal*
Hope you have a good rest, even though it may be difficult. You certainly deserve it and some loving kindness.
@CaloenasNicobarica thank you ❤️😊 a decent sleep last night, but was awoken by nightmares. Trying my best to settle myself again and hopefully capture a few more winks (brain is thick with fog this morning).
@melliotm
Did you ever get some a little more sleepyboo? Hate those days with brain fog! Not sure if you heard of these things, but Tibetan prayer/singing bowls? They're pretty neat, but they generate a tone when you strike them or draw the mallet across the rim of it. Strangely enough, that's helped with clearing the brain fog and focusing in the present. Not all every single time, mind you... but it's also good for getting your mind off of stuff. Some white noise generators/apps have sounds from those Tibetan bowls. When I remember to I use mine before sleep, especially when restless or that kinda thing.
Hope you're feeling better today! <3
@CaloenasNicobarica Got a bit more sleep, but alas it brought more nightmares along for the ride. Basically, my stress cup overfloweth. Been having to manage throughout the day by taking it as easily as possible. And riding out the mental flotsam dredged up by my subconscious during the night.
I have an app with singing bowls as a white noise option. Right now my tinnitus is acting up, so I've been masking with waterfall videos for my background environment. The visuals are also calming.
Just taking it second by second today. Trying my best to be gentle and kind and allow myself to feel how I feel. If that means stumbling through the fog then so be it. 😊💛⛺💛
@melliotm
Yes! practice makes an anchor to the here and now. and agree when we are drifting and the storms get rough we need to have this anchor. Thanks Melli. x
@rozie On that note, I need to grab hold of the line while I try to calm and soothe after a nightmare that feels like it has sent me off into the stratosphere. Waiting for the moment to pass. ..
@rozie
I'll consider the question later, perhaps...
I kinda need support.
Had a horrible incident, reduced to tears and nearly panicking. Simply for stating a feeling or how I felt about something yielded an argument from the usual suspect I'm trying to get away from. I literally had someone telling me(for 20 minutes who I am and how controlling I am, that they can never have a conversation with me and by stating my feelings I was trying to get a "last word" in? WTF. I was trembling, shaking before I even started. I tried stating a boundary, nope. That's "not allowed", or "not fair". Love how it's always me that's "wrong" or whatever. That I SAID I was OKAY with the thing they did months ago, even though I wasn't. So TECHNICALLY, he was fine. When they knew I had problems with that person and they had hurt me before, not to mention dealt drugs in our house. Well, birds of a feather. Losers/Abusers can go with their flock and fly, high-speed into a volcano.
Just nuts.
Think I need to get going on that divorce business sooner than later- even with my agoraphobia/anxiety/depression stuff. This is so not safe for me- and I'm not sure I can finish college with the way things are. I'm at a precipice where things are just too much. Where I need to start getting loans for school- but some part of me says that I should instead take the software development Bootcamp route. They usually hire upon finishing, but I don't know. They're kinda far off in the cities and I live in a rural area- so it's not like I could drive there or know anyone. Maybe there's something I can figure out. Either way, I need to do something. I have to.
@CaloenasNicobarica
Hiya, I think you are right about doing something.. whatever mental health issues you struggle with personally, anyone would be struggling in an environment produces as much stress as yours. I would do something to change it or remove yourself from it as soon as possible. Otherwise you don't have much of a chance of keeping yourself stable. No one would. I hope things get better for you :)
@Kuma0187
Thanks, Kuma! :)
The problem is that I'm still dealing being an agoraphobic who has been homebound for like nearly a decade. Not to mention I don't really have any contacts IRL and my family isn't very mentally stable either. I haven't worked for the same amount, so it's a huge push for me. Heck, it's even nerve-wracking getting groceries and I have to learn how to drive again. But, you're absolutely right. No one should or can live in this kind of environment for any amount of time. Feel like I now have the power to make the change that has been scaring me so much. Pretty much because I have to.
@CaloenasNicobarica
Oh I'm sorry to hear you experienced such a horrible incident and agree with what others are saying about narcissistic behavior. You deserve better than this. I know from what you are saying its not going to be an easy transition, but removing yourself from this is the first step. And then little by little, doing as best you can, and having support from others, you are likely be able to inch yourself forward in the direction you want to go. As captain of your own ship. We are here in support. x
I'm in the now. And I'm mindful that the now is not pleasant. I don't like the energy that's around me. I feel a lot of pain and darkness emanating off of the surroundings, off of others. I look at other people and I can see what they struggle with. The flaws that they have. So I'm being mindful. But maybe, since I don't like the way I feel..... I ought to choose what exactly I am mindful to.
Maybe I could be mindful to the positive, instead. That's hard to do, when even as recently as this week I found I was being manipulated by yet another narcissist, and I had been trying to practice being mindful to the positive with him. I had thought he was such a positive soul. So I'm on the lookout for warning signs right now. My mind is geared toward the negative, seeing what went wrong so that I can learn from it.
I feel a bit trapped.
I don't think it's actually HELPING me to have been identifying all of the narcissists who have been in my life over and over again. It's put me in a negative mood. It was interesting, but it wasn't helpful. Because I don't feel good. And I'm viewing life through a negative lens now. And I'm not happy. And I'm feeling anxiety.

I'm moving on Saturday w/my beloved 3 poochies in tow..if I can find us all a ride (I don't have a car, so their ride is still a work-in-progress). I still have SOoooo much to wrap, pack, clean, & do...& I have mono, at present, which isn't helping matters. I really have no one helping me right now (b/c other than Jesus & my dogs x3, I have no one..no friends, and zero family), and I feel SO Incredibly overwhelmed. I am struggling also with the entire packing process because with my autism my brain wants to separate, segregate, categorize, & organize EVERYthing (and I have waaaaay TOO much "stuff" for one individual to own/possess)...& I do NOT have time for that "micro-management" packing process. I don't know where you stand with faith & beliefs, Rozi, but I'm reaching out to @DeborahUK & @KLM3278 to request prayer throughout Fri, Sat., & Sun. Re:my move on this Saturday 9/30. I really need prayer for FOCUS/staying on task), MOTIVATION, peace, guidance, strength, and for God to provide for every need (including a ride for my dogs x3 & me to our new home). I appreciate your, and anyone's...heartfelt prayer support. Thanks
@caterpillargirl
Ohhhhhh!! Yes! Yes! I am praying for you!! I feel like you are me! Except I'm not moving. Hug!
Have you ever thought about asking a church to help you? My church has a ministry that does that for free!!!!! A church wants to help you. They could at least give you and your pupplies a car ride!! Call a church you go to - or a church that is near you even if you don't go!!! Jesus is with you and other believers want to help people!!! Including you!!!
I am praying Psalm 34:18 for you right now! Jesus is close and YOU aren't alone!!!! :❤️❤️❤️❤️
@KLM3278
Thank you SO much for your prayers. Keep them up..I still have a long way to go getting everything ready to go by noon (less than 12 hrs from now), & I am SO incredibly wiped out.I'm too exhaused to blink or swallow. I think I got just enough baseline energy reserves to keep inhaling & exhaling. Please pray for Saturday..I need to be rested enough to see & think straight...and to continue pitching/ditching things to the herbies & curb, packing the remains, & cleaning (😲) later in the day & eve. I' know I've been pushing myself waaay too much w/having mono, but I've had to do everything by myself. I went way outside my comfort zone & asked a few co-workers, & some people from church to help me...but they cancelled on me EVERY single day/time they agreed to help me. I don't have a car, & all I requested was for them to drive one car load of breakables over to my new place, a 2.2 mile distance. And, I asked one woman I know well if she'd help get my dogs over to my new apt.. & she bailed on me SIX different times in one week w/creative excuse after excuse (& I caught her lying re one excuse), so I done w/that church & looking forward to looking/finding a NEW church by my new place. I believe I've got a ride for my dogs, and will firm up those plans (hopefully) in the morning. Jeepers, every single square inch of me aches and throbs right now...even my jaw (😖❓) elbows, ankles, & toes. Well, I need to sign off & either get to bed, or get back to work (probably the later, unfortunately). I'm trusting God to provide for all my needs (which are endless at present). The joy of the Lord will have to be my strength b/c mine is expended. Take care my sweet friend in Christ, & I'll stay in touch. I am praying Psalm 27:14 for you 💜
@caterpillargirl
I hope you've managed to find time for a little rest my friend. It can be such pressure when it all falls on your shoulders. But later today, when you finally get into your new place, remember it doesn't have to be perfect instantly. In fact why not build a blanket fort and enjoy camping in for your first night? It will make it memorable, and the rest will come in time.
My thoughts and prayers are with you x
@caterpillargirl
It's so hard when people from church let us down. Especially after they said they would help. You just have to let that go. Pray for them. Also forgive. But you can for sure look for another church worship God at. Maybe God just knew you needed to find a new church family!! ❤️❤️ I'm SO sorry you're hurting. I get it!! Just take it all slowly. You CAN totally do this! 😃
@rozie @anomalia @pinkfluffyunicorns8706 @nenz @moj @rosyOctopus @obLIVionKate and @oblivionKateL and many others I'm sure
Dears? I was brave today.
I went back into the office/waiting room, after leaving my time with my therapist, and asked to talk with her again for a minute or so. I asked her for a hug. That was hard. We've talked about if hugs are okay or not etc within sessions before, but I'd not yet actually asked her for a hug.
So today, I was brave. I may not have talked with her about what I sort of intended to talk about ... but after session, like bye Platy see you next week, I went back and I asked for something I really needed at the time. And I know at least in part, that I really needed it from her.
@rozie I didn't read your post of today (yet), I just wanted to tell all y'all this (and all trauma support peoples too). I want to find the Piglet post again - I think it could be helpful for me in relation to others or at least in explaining what I'm trying to ask of them.
you guys! Thanks for being great listeners for me.

@cyanPlatypus6370
Hi Platy, lovely to hear from you. And well done for being so brave... for going back and asking for what you needed. So proud of you! x
@cyanPlatypus6370 I'm really proud of you for being brave and asking for what you needed
Congratulations on taking a big step—I'm sure many more will follow! *octopus hugs*
@cyanPlatypus6370 -
That is amazing and I'm really proud of you for being brave and for asking for what you needed!
so - i have never really done a check in here.
in all honesty - i didnt want to join trauma support bc magically, somehow, maybe it wouldn't relate to me?
lol - didnt work. so i am here.
I personally think, mindfulness is the KEY to getting through my recovery from trauma.
Though, I had this very unsetteling expirience with it today.
I was so numb that I could not just not feel any emotions, but i had no sense of touch - my body was totally numb 0.o
I tried to do grounding where you touch 5 things...but i could not feel a thing - which, yeah - freaked me out more.
So, it came back to mindfulness and breathing through the moment and just observing it, without judgmemnt.
err, i tried...
still, mindfulness and breathing are sometimes the only things I have to hold onto.
@blissedNblessed
Well done with your first check in here.! We are glad you have joined us here. And agree that mindfulness and breathing may be all that we have to hold on to at times... to stay present until the moment passes. When nothing else seems to work as you are saying its good to know that we have these resources to get through. x
@rozie
thanks for the welcome.
and yes, mindfulness may be the only thing...
but hey - at least it is powerful :)
@blissedNblessed (((HUGE HUGS))) Welcome hon, glad your here. >----->
