it's different for all people that are suffering with self harm but as someone who suffers from being addicted to self harm I would do it as often as i felt that it was "needed" when i would get overwhelmed or anxious or my mind would go to places i didn't particularly want it to be is when it would usually happen. there was a time when this was an everyday thing for me. so i guess my answer to your question is when ever it was felt that i needed to have the release of tension and thoughts
