What if the rocks in your way aren’t actually stopping you (but teaching you)?

We’ve all had those days where it feels like we’re just bumping from one obstacle to the next. It’s easy to see these "rocks" as things that are trying to sink us or hold us back.

But in the Way of the River, we look at things a little differently. We believe that the problem is the path. Just like a master kayaker only learns their skills in the rapids, our challenges are often the very teachers we need to help us "level up" and find a new way of being

Think about a "rock" (a challenge or annoyance) you’ve faced this week. If that rock was actually a teacher, what lesson would it be trying to show you?

Some examples might be:

  • The Lesson of Patience: (e.g., waiting for news or a result)

  • The Lesson of Resilience: (e.g., bouncing back after a mistake)

  • The Lesson of Boundaries: (e.g., learning when to say no)

  • The Lesson of Asking for Help: (e.g., realizing you can't paddle this stretch alone)

my rocks are making my way teaching them that rocks can be a path and not an obstacle. Rock your world like you never did before :)

@Heather225

had a big bunch of rocks so far this week.

I often find obstacles are trying to slow me down or have me ask for help.  i do not ask for help often and need to see it is ok to do that.

@toughTiger6481

Sounds like you’ve had a tough week, but being able to recognize that pattern is a huge step in the right direction. Those rocks feel like a wall, but they are actually a great reminder that you don't have to carry the weight alone, and it is more than okay to reach out. In fact, it's often the smartest way to clear the path. <3

Sometimes the good Lord let us fly above and beyond our difficulties.
Today I found 2 feathers in my house. Someone said; "If you find feathers in your house, then angels are visiting you." Well - with or without feathers - the Bible says: Psalm 91:11-12 "For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways;  they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone."

That is such a resilient way to look at a difficult situation! It takes a lot of heart to trust that even when things feel like they are falling apart, they might actually be falling into place for something better. <3

And it's my pleasure. Glad this post is helping :)

This week, I learned the lesson of boundaries and speaking up when I feel violated rather than just tolerating it. My rocks are teaching me emotional strength and resilience.

@sonnieeee

Establishing boundaries is honestly one of the hardest skills to master. It takes a massive amount of courage to stop tolerating what hurts you and start speaking up for what you need. Serious kudos and happy for you!

My rock is exhaustion and no motivation for anything, it’s teaching me to not distract myself with stuff I do in my free time but don’t even like (aka scrolling on my phone) but actually rest or do the things that make me proud. 😓☺️

I really feel this as an incessant scroller, and it ending up feeling even more draining. Using your exhaustion as a compass to find actual, deep rest is a game changer.

User Profile: JasGab200519970

@Butterfly723389 I fall into that habit too - what works for me is timing how long ive spent to stay on task.

Keep using the strategies that work for you and eventually you shall see even more progress!

@Heather225 My Rock is boundaries and it's teaching me I can be empathetic but not over extended when I'm feeling low myself. I respect the rock and I will be able to flow with the current not against it.

I love that you are respecting the rock instead of fighting it. Realizing that you can care for others without drowning yourself is how you actually sustain that kindness in the long run. Flowing with the current sounds a lot more peaceful than trying to force your way through after all, and you are doing a great job of protecting your energy. <3

@Heather225

Thank you for this post. Rocks can be puzzling sometimes, and I think it can be enough just to acknowledge they’re there for a reason. Sometimes the lesson reveals itself quickly, other times it takes years or maybe never fully makes sense. Taking the time to reflect on a rock and what it might be teaching can be a good first step to gain perspective, but it’s also okay if the meaning isn’t clear right away. I try to remind myself, “everything is happening in my favor, even when it doesn’t feel like it,” and keep moving forward.

It reminds me of exposure therapy for anxiety, where the focus is on facing the fear with the right tools rather than dissecting why the fear exists. Similarly, when rocks appear in life, the source matters less than how we respond. Often, we already see the first step, and just taking it can be enough. Waiting for full clarity can hold us back, and sometimes being proactive, even without complete understanding, is the real lesson.

@Hope Yes the wrapper isnt always vibrant and shinning and the rocks can reflect a grounded depth to them although the mind sees it as shaky quaky

You express yourself very well here, Hope :) 💎
