Every seasoned volunteer was once a nervous beginner. To celebrate Volunteer Month, I'd like us to build a Wisdom Wall to help guide our new and aspiring volunteers.

  1. Share one sentence of advice you wish you knew on your very first day as a volunteer.
  2. Fill in the blank: The most rewarding part of volunteering on 7 Cups is ...

Your experience is powerful, and your wisdom could inspire someone to keep going on a tough day, take the leap to start, or realize the profound impact they can have, and they already have what it takes by seeing it in you.

Thank you for championing our community and making it stronger through your volunteering. <3

    I wish I had known the importance of taking care of myself in the beginning, and that I didn't have to take everything on just because it's available.

    Gosh, there are so many things. Getting to support random people just because, learning active listening skills, and being part of a community that cares for each other.

As a forum supporter, I wish I knew that feeling unsure doesn’t mean you’re not ready... it means u care.

The most rewarding part of volunteering on 7 Cups is seeing how even a few words can comfort someone on a hard day. 😊

Hugs 🤗

It's ok to go off the script and just be you. You don't have to be like everyone else. Adapt your own way of listening and find your own style that works for you. It's also ok to not be available when you're emotionally and mentally unavailable. ♡

For me, it's that feeling I get when I legitimately know and feel like I have helped someone genuinely and they are grateful for it. What they don't know (especially my long term members) is that it truly makes me happy seeing you doing well and thriving. From how you were from initially meeting you to how you are now. Years later and that bond still there and growth is seen. That's what makes me happy. Knowing that this crazy Desiree can still inspire and touch someone even through her own mess, dysfunction, and battles of mental health. ♡

Help people, but don't forget to take care of yourself

The most rewarding part of volunteering on 7 Cups is the wisdom you gain through experience. Sometimes, it's in the task, the role you take, not in the document training.

    One thing I wish I knew on my first day as a volunteer was that I, too, am a human with limits, and I can't save everyone all the time. Some days its okay to not help all the people in the world: some days its okay to help just one person, and its okay even if that one person is yourself.

    Getting to be a part of an amazing community full of love, support, and joy.

@Heather225

I wish I had known that you don’t always have to know what to say or know exactly how to help someone to make an impact.

Knowing that I have made an impact on others’ lives. Also being able to provide empathy and care is huge. The anonymity that 7 Cups provides not only benefits members, but also the listeners so we can provide support without bias. This is huge.

I wish I knew that it was okay that I couldn't be a "superhero" all of the time and that it was okay to refer someone if I couldn't really help them.

The most rewarding part of volunteering on 7 Cups is knowing that someone feels better after conversing. And it means a lot because that's what a lot of people are looking for... Just someone to talk to.

    People come here because they want to be heard. All you need to do is listen and be there for them.

@Heather225 one sentence:

Helping others will make you proud. Helping yourself will make you heal.
