Building a Stronger Relationship with Yourself

Understanding and caring for yourself is one of the most important skills we can develop. A strong relationship with yourself means knowing your strengths, acknowledging your weaknesses, and being honest about your feelings, thoughts, and motivations. Over time, I’ve realized that self-awareness isn’t just about noticing what I like or dislike it’s about understanding why I reat the way I do in certain situations and how I can respond more intentionally.

For me, developing this relationship has involved reflection, self-kindness, and curiosity. Journaling has been particularly helpful; writing down my thoughts allows me to see patterns in my emotions and behaviours that I might otherwise ignore. I’ve also learned to pause before reacting, asking myself questions like, “What am I really feeling right now?” or “Why did this situation affect me this way?” Taking the time to slow down, reflect, and accept my emotions without judgment has helped me make more thoughtful decisions and feel more grounded in daily life.

Being in tune with myself also affects how I relate to others. When I understand my needs and boundaries, I can communicate more clearly and engage in healthier, more authentic relationships. This self connection allows me to show up fully in social situations, respond rather than react, and continue growing both personally and socially.

Ultimately, building a strong relationship with yourself is a continuous process. The more attention and care you give to your iner self, the better you can navigate challenges, understand others, and live a balanced and meaningful life.

What’s one practice you use to better understand yourself, and how has it influenced the way you interact with others? How do you think self-awareness can help in making difficult decisions?

@Veya007

I use self reflection to allow myself to process my emotions and not allow my day to be chaotic.

I love a nice hot bubble bath, cup of tea and some chocolate 🥰

What's one practice you use to better understand yourself, and how has it influenced the way you interact with others?
One practice I've found incredibly valuable is mindfulness meditation, which has allowed me to develop a greater awareness of my thoughts and emotions, enabling me to respond more intentionally in social interactions. By tuning into my inner world, I've become more attuned to others' emotions and needs, fostering deeper and more empathetic connections. This increased self-awareness has also helped me set healthier boundaries and communicate more effectively, leading to more authentic and fulfilling relationships.
How do you think self-awareness can help in making difficult decisions?
Self-awareness is a game-changer when it comes to decision-making, as it allows you to recognize your biases, values, and motivations, leading to more informed and intentional choices. By understanding your thought patterns and emotional triggers, you can separate knee-jerk reactions from thoughtful responses, making it easier to weigh options and consider long-term consequences. Ultimately, self-awareness empowers you to make decisions that align with your values and goals, rather than being driven by external pressures or unconscious patterns.

I started journaling - but more focused on my emotions and feelings. I made a table with components like what has happened, how I felt, etc so that I could analyse the situation in a distance. I could always look back when similar situations happen so I think it was quite useful.

@Veya007 Sometimes after an argument or disagreement I may have had with others. I like to talk to the person about our feelings and ask them about how I came across to them. This helps me understand how I react to conflict and what I could change to make things healthier

One practice I use to understand myself better is quiet self-reflection, often through journaling or pausing to notice how I’m feeling. This has helped me become more patient and less reactive with others, as I respond with more awareness instead of impulse. Self-awareness helps in difficult decisions by allowing me to understand my true needs and values, so I can choose more thoughtfully and with less regret.

Self reflection was also for me a pillar in getting to know myself.  As you say,  having a ready set of a couple of question that I can use when I find myself reacting to something, or when heavy feelings arise to understand where all that comes from, is golden. What is something else I also found helpful was to ask myself a lot of others questions, daily I would ask myself: 1. a fun question like:  If I could press pause on life and go anywhere, do anything, with zero consequences, what would I do?, 2. an emotional related question, something like: What did I feel drawn to today, and what did I feel resistance toward? What might that say about my current needs or boundaries? 3. a deep insight question: What core value feels most alive in me right now? Have I been honouring it, or betraying it, even subtly?.   For me this was one of the most fun tools to get to know myself.

Hi @Veya007 !

Thank you for charing with us 💕
One of the most effective practices for me is the "5 why" method, which helps me get to the root cause of emotions. It also allows me to address the core of the problem in my interactions with others rather than reacting to external symptoms.

@Veya007

One helpful practice is sitting with and acknowledging my emotions. Sometimes, it can be uncomfortable but there is empowerment in choosing to stick to my values even if it costs me something. Trying to do right by me so I can do right by others.

I don't have answers to these questions, and I'm unsure how to care for myself. I care for everyone, but when I need care, I go numb, sleep, cry, or go blue. I am still trying to figure out everything about what can help but fail. However, your post gives me some insights. Thank you:)

One practice I use to better understand myself is trying to be more authentic and not take other people’s words too personally, since everyone has their own struggles. This has helped me become more understanding and empathetic toward others. I think self-awareness helps with difficult decisions because it allows us to acknowledge our limitations, emotions, and values more honestly.
