Course 1, Discussion 4: System vs Goals
Hello Leadership Crew!
Welcome to our 4th discussion in this first course. In today's discussion, we will be talking about systems vs. goals.
To start, please read this post here and watch this video.
The basic argument here is that having a system is better than having a goal. A system is a way of behaving that helps you move towards accomplishing something. A goal is usually and end state that happens after you have accomplished something. I think eating healthy is a good example. A goal might be to lose 10 pounds. In this case, you feel kind of bad about yourself until you hit that goal; and then, once you hit it, you kind of lose the purpose because the goal has been reached. If you relapse and gain wait again, then you fall back into feeling bad about yourself again. Contrast this with a system of eating healthy.
A system might include things like: having a big glass of water prior to each meal; eating a lot of fruits, vegetables, and nuts; not eating after 9pm; and/or doing some level of intermittent fasting. You wouldn't integrate all of these new healthy eating behaviors at once. Instead, you'd gradually introduce one and then another and then another over whatever period of time makes sense. The system enables you to continuously get healthier and healthier. You will eventually reach the goal, but it'll be the byproduct of eating healthy.
This also has implications for 7 Cups as well. We might have goals of having a certain amount of group support messages or 1:1 messages. Those are fine goals to have, but we mostly want to create a system of support where people care for one another and then the natural result is an increased number of messages.

For me the best system to follow are habits such as:
- Eating properly, sleeping 7-8 hours, praying everyday, meditate for at least 10 minutes a day, exercise 3 to 4 days weekly, building relationships to improve oneself. All of this makes me happy, gives me energy and daily positivity!
@TheHearthofBelievers wow, that's amazing! and if that makes you happy that's a even a plus motivation to follow your system! amazing work!
@TheHearthofBelievers
That sounds Amazing. All the best 👍

- most important of all, setting up a healthy system to have a more organised life and natural at the same time.

@psychologyloverr
Great!! Good luck with that💜
✒️ What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed?
I need to be more responsible and on top of trying to manage my chronic migraines. By being more aware of triggers, it could potentially help cut down on the frequency and severity of my flare-ups. That will in turn help me be more present and a better support system here on 7 Cups as well as making my time spent with friends and family more meaningful.
✒️ What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?
Staying on top of my stretching and physical therapy, hydrating properly (and then some!), and making better food choices (non-inflammatory).
@ThirteenHearts
Putting your health first is a great system to set up!
@Hope
Systems are flexible so you can notice opportunities, like eating better and being more hydrated. This is what I need to set up in my life.
3 Behaviours I can implement include drinking water regularly, always eating well (not dieting), and being educated on the food I eat.
@sunnyCloud660 I think you can do it with your system.
@Hope
✒️ What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed?
To build a structured and effective method of studying, whilst avoiding burn-out.
✒️ What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?
- Be organised - create a realistic study plan.
- Dedication - stick to the study plan and avoid distractions.
- Self-awareness - be aware of not pushing myself too hard and allowing myself breaks.
@Sealiously
great!! good luck on that
yes, distractions pulls us away from routines and goals. I often find myself getting distracted by devices, people and mostly by thoughts. It is very important to be dedicated to what you have chose to achieve and not get dragged away things which pleases us but drags us away from systems
@Hope

@Hope
✒️ What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed?
in order for me to succeed in life, one key system that i have to set up is to work on my social skillset. i believe that i'm good with this online, but not in the real world. i think that being more communicable in the real world will also make me more self confident.
✒️ What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?
1) communicate regularly with family, friends, and loved ones
2) develop healthy daily patterns and habits
3) read more and video game less, which will definitely take alot out of me, and this is an understatement

It’s awesome that you’re working on your social skills! Starting with family and friends is such a good idea. Also cutting back on gaming is tough, but I believe you can do it! 💙

@Hope
A key system I want to set up in my life is better sleep. I’ve noticed that when I’m rested I can focus, listen and care for others much more effectively.
Three small behaviors I can add are:
-
Going to bed around the same time each night.
-
Limiting screens before sleep.
-
Read when bedtime approaches to signal my body it’s bedtime.
@Hope

Have planned times to wake up and sleep everyday.
Plan the day and study blocks before starting the day
