What might you do when your emotions are all over the place?

When emotions feel overwhelming, one of the best things you can do is pause and ground yourself. Try taking a few deep breaths, placing a hand on your heart, or doing a quick body scan to notice any tension. Journaling, going for a short walk, or even just naming the emotions you're feeling ("I'm anxious," "I'm sad," "I'm overwhelmed") can help make them feel more manageable. Talking to someone whether a friend, a listener, or a therapist  can also bring clarity and comfort. You're not alone in feeling this way.

How can you get hold of those emotions and work on them?
A great first step is to practice self-awareness. Start noticing patterns—what tends to trigger strong emotions, and how your body responds. From there, you can build a toolkit: maybe that means practicing mindfulness, getting better sleep, setting healthy boundaries, or expressing your feelings creatively through art or writing. It’s okay to have tough emotional days—what matters is how you care for yourself through them. Progress doesn’t come from never feeling messy; it comes from learning how to support yourself kindly when you do.

One of the most helpful things for me is to stop what I am doing, sit down and do some breathwork or using one of my calming videos from my "emergency playlist" like Hands on the heart to calm and find balance again.

Later on when I feel calm I would reflect on the emotion and ask myself, what could have triggered it? HALT

H - hunger?

A - anger from something that I suppressed and that needs attention

L - feeling lonely

T - feeling tired

When my emotions are chaotic, I... realise I am still learning how to control them. Sometimes it feels my emotions are entirely out of my hands and somehow not really my own. So I look to places like these for tips and advice.

I believe knowing the emotion is very helpful.

@pamharley003 thanks for this 💜🥰 When my emotions are all over the place, I need

To be alone.

I need time.

I need space to breathe and process.

I need tea 😊

I need rest.

But all of this starts with acknowledgement and ownership of your feelings and not bottling them up ♥️

What evidence is there that those 8 emotions in the graphic are "core emotions"? This kind of classification seems somewhat arbitrary to me. For example, it could be argued that anger is a outcome of fear. In which case it makes little sense to classify it at the same level.

No worries. It is one way to describe emotions. It doesn't fit with my experience, but that's just me, and it might be helpful to others.

In the absence of perfect understanding, we must work with what we've got. Your insight points out that we do not yet know emotion, and that there is much to gain from the pursuit of its understanding.

@cyanessence

Exactly. Thank you for doing a better job of putting into words what I was trying to say.

I think we agree there are a lot of unknowns about emotions. And I find it all fascinating.

I really like that you inform yourself as much as possible about the topic and I get your point! Much of the information that for example I use comes from research work of universities and I believe that was the case with this thread too. You can read more about core emotions here. May I ask what is the research basis of your statement? I'm always eager to learn. Kindly let me know by pm and not in the forum as the forum space is for answering questions of the threads. Thanks for your understanding!

@pamharley003

first remove yourself from the situation if possible.

next wait, do your upmost best to not react. Try waiting until you can respond.

find distractions.

Be mindful of your thoughts and try redirecting or challenging the less helpful ones.

as emotions stem from thoughts work on perception of the problem and thoughts you have surrounding it , one wayto get a hold of those emotions .

you asked methods, not necessarily good ones so , well this is mine.

great reading others answers.

I used to use an emotion wheel to help me know how I feel, it was interesting to see the granular emotions within the emotion.
