Do we always need to show compassion?
Have you ever experienced the situation where a “friend” calls you for help, asks you to listen to them but when you call and you let them know that you’re not okay they simply say, sorry, call me when you feel better and end the call. Sometimes you meet people in your lives who will exploit your generosity and your social conscience but will rarely give .
Do you think we always need to show compassion and if so why?
Where do you draw the line between compassion and self protection?

I guess we should be compassionate but not always. Because there are good people but as well as little clever and selfish people too. We should help them too bcoz we should be like that what we are with others. But if you think they're using you or just wasting your time then I guess we shouldn't. Yeh but I believe in second chance too if someone wants to improve and apologize we should always give a second chance to them but never let others to make benefit of your kindness too much. And I guess we should always help to our friends and moreover we can't expect from anyone the same. And I guess the line between compassion and self protection is that only when we realize someone is using us or wasting our time and energy. Thank you❤
@LovetoGod
Hi LovetoGod, nice to see you here
. I too believe in seconds chances, also in 3. and something 4th chances but realizing when it is a pattern, meaning people use you is really important.
@amiablePeace77
Yeh, thank you for the great question💖
@amiablePeace77
I agree that lots of forgivness and chances are important for others. But, you really hit it on spot when you need to be able to notice the continued patters, how things are, what happens. That makes a big difference, Thanks ami
@amiablePeace77
Do you think we always need to show compassion and if so why? I think having compassion does not mean sitting and letting someone vent. Compassion can be making sure everyone gets a little of what they need, including myself.
Where do you draw the line between compassion and self protection? I think we all need boundaries. When I start feeling bad listening to someone I try to shift the focus or I might even have to politely move toward an end to the chat.
@soulsings
Very nice responses Soul. You come up with some of the most wonderful, insightful thoughts, ideas, and knowledge, so, so, much of the time!!!!!
Thanks Soul.
@Amelia2324 thanks for your kind words and appreciation.
@amiablePeace77
Wow Ami another great lil discussion here for us-thank you
Do you think we always need to show compassion and if so why? No. Respect yes. Sometimes we are not our best to give/support someone else. Sometimes the other person can become pushy, to needy, to demanding due to them not being well or in crisis. With respect you can kindly share not now.
Where do you draw the line between compassion and self protection? If I am not well, all rational things I know is not on the table. If I have calmly shared I am not well to support or help them in whatever they need and they push-well then I share more directly but still respectfully I can not. Then I let them know I am ending the call or text or whatever. I will contact them when I am feeling better
@amiablePeace77
Do you think we always need to show compassion and if so why?
By showing compassion to others we will get it in return from others. Being compassionate shows we care for others
Where do you draw the line between compassion and self protection?
I show it by setting boundaries up to make sure I am bein g treated fairly. I show a lot of empathy to others and show people how I would like to be treated. If we treat others how we would like to be treated then we are treated the same
This makes me think of the, “mind the weather,” lesson in the, “my growth path.” I think its good to be there for ppl but if its costing your own well being it is necessary to cut those ties. I had a friend who went through a hard pregnancy & I tried to be there even when I wasn’t feeling well. In the end she turned out to be not the best at being there for me. In the end she cut me off for her husband. Which is fine, I wish her the best. But sometimes, we have to remember to therefor our selves and our own wellbeing or their might be nobody else that will do so. Love yourself then you can love others more genuinely.
@beautifulsadspac3
Being cut off by a friend after having supported them in hard times is tough, really sorry that happened to you but you're right, we need to care for ourselves and our own wellbeing
@amiablePeace77
Thank you. Im not sure how to react to genuine compassion. I hope thats appropriate.. I mean its been years. But, I cant judge her. Based on her situation, circumstances, and our culture, its the norm. It sucked but we just chose different paths in life. In the emd I hope shes doing at the very least, okay. But knowing how it goes with the path she chose.. shes just trying to survive mentally.
@amiablePeace77 hi everyone <3
~ i think it's good to be compassionate, but we must remember to take care of ourselves first. this way, when we put ourselves first, we will feel so good that we have even more love for other people to give <3
~ i noticed that the word "friend" was put in quotation marks :0 i'd say that if this friend only calls when they want help, i'd probably put an end to our communication at some point. helping them out when they don't really want to get to know me or actually be my friend will decrease my mental stability and trust. just as they want to feel loved and cared about, i want to feel loved and cared about as well. if a genuine friend kept asking me for help, i'd do my best to support them, but i'd tell them i can't help them at times when i am busy taking time for myself. c: it'd be better for both of us as i could support myself and my friend more if i just took care of myself as well and didn't ignore my own needs
i hope everyone has an amazing day <3
@rrretsuko
You mentioned something which really struck me "i want to feel loved and cared about as well". This is how it is in a balanced friendship. Great point!
@amiablePeace77 so happy you think so ! <3 hehe thank you !
Do you think we always need to show compassion and if so why?
I believe that compassion is important, and we should give ourselves and others as much of is at possible; however, not everyone's cup of water is always perfect. Sometimes we have days where we are overflowing, others where we have barely anything to drink at all. Too much of one emotion -- even happiness at times -- can have a negative impact on our mental health.
Where do you draw the line between compassion and self protection?
Personally, I'm still working with myself on where to draw this line. I feel at times I may be giving too much for others without sheltering myself, taking time to self-care and protect. Still searching for that solid balance.
Do you think we always need to show compassion and if so why? I believe that we only need to show compasion some of the time. Think---if we were to show it all the time, which would include everyone, we would be showing compasion for a lot of unhealthy behaviors in life that people do. Compasion is a special feeling for us to share and not to be shared to lightly. Also, as in the discussion presentation before these questions at the top, if we just go around sharing compasion constantly with just everyone, they will just come to assume that this will be a give and come to expect it and often, many will then not even appreciate you for doing so. Also, if we are showing compasion, just because we feel we should always do this, what about when people may come to you that know you and expect it for whatever wrong kind of behavior they may have done? It would then be wrong of of us and we would be choosing then to support them in showing compasion and support for things that they actually need to know, or need to not be accepted for their chosen behavior. We are not some accept alll machine. We have to also have our own morals and be willing to have our own boundaries about ourselfs for what is right and wrong and what kinds of things we approve of, and what we will and will not be willing to accept.
Where do you draw the line between compassion and self protection? this is also a very interesting and deep question. Both of these questions were well thought out and presented to us. We deserve to give thought back and good, honest answers. I've had to think on this one a bit to get where it is really coming from in it's mindset. From my past and what I relate with, which will and should differ from others, I look at this as more of an abuse question in a way. You can also find this in all kinds of different "relationships." From a friendship relationship point of view, as I totally step back from physical/sexual/emotional abusive situations, in a friendship, if you are always just giving and giving compasion, you are in a way, letting go of your own boundaries. You are just devoting all of your time to their needs and not thinking of your own needs also. Yes, friendships can also turn violently abusive and abusers will look for cues like the constant compasion from you guaging what you are willing to accept and put up with and accept as ok behavior. This compassion and too much of it, lets the abuser know that you will also tolerate abuse from them and be compasionate to their excuses for whey they did it, such as well, they were just having a bad day and it was stressful for them. They will take your compasion for this behavior of them being and acting bad because you accept and are so compasionate with them as all is ok and you will just take what ever they do as alright and you will understand and always be so comapsionate with them. Even with a simple friend, this always compasion thing can go to far and cause them to also abuse you in less violent ways. They will continue to expect you to keep on being compasionate with them, being there for them all the time and showing how understanding you are of them also. This can and usually leads to them disrespecting you and using you.
LOL, I do feel compasionate about these subjects presented
Do you think we always need to show compassion and if so why?
I think one can have compassion for someone and still draw boundary lines if they feel like the person will start taking advantage of them. I don't really think it has to be one or the other. You can still feel compassion and understanding for others and also resist a person's bad or manipulative behavior. Although it's definitely a lot harder to do so.
Where do you draw the line between compassion and self protection?
Definitely draw healthy boundaries before it comes to the point where you start to feel resentment towards someone.
@cafedaydreams
What great answers you gave! They are so insightful, honest, and very healthy. It is very nice to see what you wrote and shared with us. I am glad, from kind of reading into what you wrote, that you seem to have good, healthy boundaries. So glad you have that for yourself!!!!!
I agree that if you are not dealing with an abuser, you can also have the compasion, along with having good healthy boundaries, and be able to have compassion for the other person. I have a lot of compassion for others that I do not agree with many of their behaviors, but, I still have lots of compasion for them, sometimes too much and that has gotten me into messes with having the compassion for them sometimes. But, you do have your great boundaries and I bet you are good at all of this!!!!
Aww thanks 😊. And well I still think I have some work to do with creating good boundaries with a few on my life , but I'm a lot better at it now. All of what I've said has come from experiences. I too was also someone who showed perhaps too much compassion for some people, where I've overextended myself. It led me to unhealthy and even sometimes dangerous situations that I regret.
1. Compassion also helps a person fulfill a life that matters because it gives perspective to her own life and troubles. It makes you less self-absorbed and more focused on society and your role in it. Compassion can make you happier and can help you leave a positive mark on the world. Everyone deserves compassion because every life matters. And that is why compassion is so important-because my life matters just as much as everyone else's. And thus compassionate people can stop thinking of their lives as greater or more important than others and that fosters acceptance and forgiveness which adds up to a happier and more fulfilled person.
2. However, I do not think we always need to show compassion to everyone.
When I prioritize my own needs over the needs of others, that’s self care.
When I expect others to prioritize my needs over their own needs, that’s selfishness.
The first priority is you! If you neglect yourself, your finances, your health, your happiness, how can you help others? What kind of a sample would you be?
You can’t really give what you don’t have.
