Many people find it hard to go back to being just friends or even acquaintances after a break up. To know so much about a person in such an intimate way and then to have to pretend you don't know these things can be hard for some people. Your ex may feel awkward around you because he doesn't know how to act around you now that you don't have this intimate connection anymore and yes 3 years is a long time but each person heals and gets over breakups in different ways. He may never feel comfortable around you again but give a bit more time or even talk to them about it and what you can do to help.
