HALT technique

Remember to HALT and ask: Am I Hungry, angry, lonely, tired?

I’m sure many of you know the situation: all of a sudden you just snap, out of nowhere, you explode in anger. Even you are surprised by the intensity and suddenness of your reaction. Or you walk through the day feeling not well and really don’t know why.

Your mood changes when your needs are not met.

Here are some questions to ask yourself in such situations:

  1. Am I hungry?

  2. Am I angry because of something my mind is still obsessed with?

  3. Do I feel lonely in general so that makes me think no one is there to help me?

  4. Am I tired and need to rest so I can focus on my task again?

Our emotions are tied to our physical well-being, so when you notice that you’re not feeling well it can help to ask yourself these questions.

Participation question:

When you feel hungry, angry, lonely or tired how does your behavior change?

Seeking Help

Mental stress can cause us not to be able to see the good things in life and lead to excessive rumination or worries which can result in serious health problems. If you have serious, long-term problems with negative thinking and feeling depressed, see your doctor or talk to a therapist if they are related to any mental challenges.

@amiablePeace77 it doesn't really change when I'm tired or when I'm hungry at all, but when im angry, I can't talk, I'm snappy, overly emotional, can't make good decisions, too iiritable and irrational. I need to walk away, process, clear my thoughts, give myself time and space before confronting things, so im not simply reacting 💜🥰

@amiablePeace77 sometimes it really triggers the depression then comes bad thoughts and then a good cry. Then I feel better again💖

Thank you for posting that. I have been quite familiar with HALT since I was in 12 Steps communities.

It is funny how those four letters interact with one another:

When you are Hungry - you might have a sore stomach, have difficulties with concentrating or become more impatient.

When you are Angry - you might be irritable, or the opposite, react softly while a firm, assertive actions could work better.

When you feel Lonely - you are at risk of joining a wrong company, or giving a green light to a romantic relationship with someone you are not too convinced about.

When you feel Tired - it can easily turn into a "leave me alone" attitude, feeling of helplessness or thinking that all your efforts are in vain.

That's why when you see any of those letters - just stop, and be kind to yourself.

@amiablePeace77, am I allowed to say tired? I have two jobs and a small cafeteria. What's more tiring is that I can't feel my wife. It's like I'm begging for someone to lift me.

@CaptMikel

Sorry to hear that you're struggling. Having 2 jobs and a cafeteria is a lot to manage! Do you feel you might suffer from burnout? Burnout can lead to feelings of numbness too. Please remember that you can always connect with a listener for a 1:1 chat for support and comfort.

I definitely experience this. I bet a lot of people here are similar, where we tend to put our needs to the side because of something that needs done, someone who needs help, etc. Something always seems more important that we have to attend to first, “and then I’ll get to that thing for myself”. The bad part is we may even be fine for a while, because we’re so used to doing it. But it catches up with us! We can be in denial for a little while, but it does! I am starting to try to remind myself of this all the time. Suddenly just one more thing happens and it’s like the straw that broke the camel’s back, and the smallest thing sets me off. Something that normally wouldn’t bother me, that’s the frustrating thing. I have begun to be able to tell the warning signs, when all my senses seem overloaded: noises are too loud, I can’t be touched even in a gentle way, my head hurts or feels full, I’m dizzy from not eating, or the light is too bright. I know I’m about to explode. Unfortunately then sometimes I’m in the middle of some social event or trying to have fun with my kids. At least with my kids, I’ve been successful with telling them I need to turn down the sound immediately and go into another room for a minute. They are pretty good about helping quickly create a calmer environment and helping extra with chores that night or something. ❤️

@PiecesOfWhoeverIWas

Many of us fall into the trap "Still this thing to finish and then self-care". The point is sadly that self-care never happens as we were telling ourselves. This is the reason why I decided to have times dedicated to self-care, so I know I am free to attend to myself. Good that you learned the warning signs and also that your children understand when you need to turn the music down or when you need help.

the biggest precursor of and outburst if not the only one is lack of sleep.

the detrimental effects are many, vast in areas of daily living it can effect.

the rest don’t have any effect or impact.

Having a day where you don’t feel well, I find unhelpful. Yes colds and illnesses happen but psychiatric illness is not defined by heightened psychological distress or symptoms for a day. That’s life. Stressed, sad, grieving, grief and all labeled negative emotions are a part of life and are natural to experience with appropriate circumstances. You are not ill. Prolonged and or disproportionate, or without reason at all. Could indicate a illness.

just because you face the trials and tribulations of life and feel the associated emotions elicited (life is difficult beyond belief, so many difficult emotions), it doesn’t suggest you are ill.

I use HALT when appropriate. However, these days, this acronym doesn't help  when the rent or bills  are due. Landlord & electric company don't care about HALT - just to get paid. Sorry for the negative answer, trying to be supportive, yet, being realistic.

I feel like HALT is more about my internal world and managing it.

When you feel hungry - I am grumpy so I get somethings to eat.

angry - I go meditate

lonely - I go on 7 cups

tired - I get grumpy and over reactive
