Being mindful with sugar
Sugar can negatively impact brain health, especially when consumed in excess. It can affect mood, behavior, and cognitive performance.
Do you think you eat and drink too much sugar? If so, how could you reduce it?
@amiablePeace77
Of course humans have always enjoyed sugar. At the beginning, it was mostly in the form of honey, fruits and various types of alcohol. When the Europeans were on the Crusades war path, they discovered cane sugar. in the 1700s, sugar was extracted from beets but this really took off in the early 19th century. In the Far East, certain mung beans are also "sugary".
Anyway, this explains why sugary stuff became more and more common as it was less and less expensive. The taste of sugar (before it even hits your digestive system) is addictive. Add fat to the sugar and... yummy! Hard to stop, because our brain is too happy.
Among the ways and in what quantities we ingest sugar depends a lot on where we live. Sugar contents in industrial foods vary. What is an occasional treat to some becomes a basic staple to others.
Personally, I am not too mindful of of my sugar consumption. Coffee or tea is unsweetened. I enjoy a glass of red wine every evening after dinner and 2 apple turnovers with unsweetened apple sauce every morning for breakfast. Otherwise, no desserts or industrial food. I have never had much taste for confectioneries either. A snack, if I am hungry, is a handful of walnuts and maybe some cheese. Fruits in season also.
Certain pastries or cakes presented for a celebration will not last very long in my presence. 😀
@Fradiga wow do you make your apple turnovers or do you have a local bakery? A recipe would be nice if you have one.
@soulsings
I suppose I could make my own turnovers but it would be a hassle to make everyday. Those are made with cooked apples wrapped in "pâte feuilletée" (puff pastry), adding an egg wash on top, and baked. I remember making a batch of those when I lived with a family in Japan in the 70s, but it took a while to make the puff pastry itself. BTW, there are a ton of apple orchards in the North of Japan and there are delicious.
Apple trees are very generous and it is quite easy to make apple sauce, however. Some of it can be frozen. Apple sauce is sweeter than a fresh apple, so there is no need to add sugar.
@Fradiga
They are *** LOL

I don't eat much sugar anymore, especially when I found out I was diabetic. My problem was I drank my sugar. I love Coke and lemonade, and I was drinking it like it was going to run out. I switched to Coke Zero (which I do like) and no lemonades or juice. Except for the Coke Zero, I'm not fond of sweeteners, so I just avoid it altogether. I did let myself have one thing. I love Chobani Sweet Cream and I have to add it to my coffee. I get one nice coffee a day. :)
@amiablePeace77
I don't think i do consume that much, however i do think i can do better.
I usually do it by stalking healthier snacks so I would eat the alternatives when i feel the need for sugar
@daydreammemories

@amiablePeace77 Tho I dont consume half as much as sugar as I once did I still feel I take in too much even if only 2-5 times a month. I am working on deleting all sugar as well as milk and meat. My goal is working on being a vegain which I do need help with but since I have no one I can ask I can only try the best I can One day at a time.
@eternalHero77
I find most of the time in life we can only try our best, we are not superheroes like in movies. If you have any questions I can try to help as much as I can.
@amiablePeace77 I am trying to cut out things. I use to put like 8 teaspoons of sugar in tea, drink 8-12 3 liter bottles of soda practically every week etc. I think what got me to go over board in such a way was when I got pregnant doctor had me do a test where I had to drink a bottle of coke(wijust the syrup nothin’ else that makes it into soda) doctor told me I could consume as much sugar as I wanted ‘cause I had a high tolerance of it and could take in alot with no problem. In time my husband kept on me to where I went down to 2 sugars to sometimes usin’ none at all for tea. soda I practically done away with and maybe have it occasionally. I turn to water and juice though I admit I dont drink enough water. I am now also trying to stop milk as I read milk causes inflammation in the body which can cause pain. I Wanna to get rid of pain I hate it so I wanna do what I can but how to stop where I can replace it with somethin’ else healthy thats where I get stuck at. Same with meat. I have ate meat practically my entire life and also living with people who refused to at least limit meat out of the daily intake made it hard for me to stop. I am trying again however one thing my ex would say is by removing meat there was nothin’ one could do to replace the protein and other noutrishment the body needs that meat gives so thats another thing I have issues on. He always told me with stuff to do my research which unfortunatly becomes another issue ‘cause I often have issues with comprehending what I am reading so having limited amount of people in my life I have no one to Chat About these things with.
