Becoming a bit distant to someone you have been close to for so long can always be a very sour experience for sure. But it also means you have a good understanding between each other.
You might want to consider and be upfront about your true feelings towards him. A decent apology with effort makes a big difference. Talk it out freely with him and since you have been together for so long, maybe you can understand each other better. If he still wants to continue being friends it is better to let thing be how is has to be. Maybe you two will be back together after a break. Best wishes~
