Introducing “The Way of the River” Series (Masterpost)
Dear Community,
I’m excited to share this series with you. I’ve been working on these ideas - on and off - throughout my life. It is my best attempt at providing a map that I hope you all will find practical, helpful, and uplifting.
Like all things on 7 Cups, I see this as a conversation. Some of these points will resonate with you. Please let me know what parts you like or find meaningful. Some points will be less helpful. I’ll work to sharpen all of the points through dialog with you.
One other interesting piece of information - this series is the conceptual framework or underlying philosophy behind 7 Cups. I didn’t have all of these pieces when we started back in 2013. You all have been teaching me these concepts. Just recently, I’ve finally been able to articulate them.
Thank you again for teaching me these ideas and for helping me to refine them. Here is the guide to the series:
The Journey
This series will have the following parts:
Part 1 - The River - Exploring life as a River
Part 2 - Navigating Your Own Kayak: Learning to Steer Through Calm and Rapid Waters
Part 3 - Paddling Alongside Others: The Art and Practice of the Wounded Healer
Part 4 - Charting a Course for All of Us - Next steps on the Mission!
Part 5 - Understanding The River Map: Finding Your Flow
Each week, we’ll release new forum posts connected to these parts.
This masterpost will include all links as they’re released, acting as your blueprint to navigate the full series.
This series offers insights on self-awareness, resilience, and compassionate connection. You will get to discuss, learn, and grow with others on the same path. We have also created the following badges that will help you keep track of your progress:
Badge 1: The First Paddle - For beginning your journey and taking your first step into The Way of the River. Please read and comment here to get this first badge.
Badge 2: Kayaker - For learning to paddle through calm and rapid waters; finding balance in the flow.
Badge 3: River Fellow - For traveling alongside others - sharing compassion, strength, and understanding on the river.
Badge 4: River Guide - For completing The Way of the River and helping others navigate their own path.
Badge 5: The River Map - For exploring life’s river with curiosity, reflection, and an open heart.

that's a really cool metaphor, and thought provoking! will be looking forward to it🙂💚
@GlenM
I'm not usually inclined to join groups, but the name of this group got my attention. Can you guess why? 😊 I do relate to life as a river. It's useful, especially if one considers the huge variety of characteristics that a river may have, and degree of accommodation or resistance it can offer. However, the main reason I chose the screen name is to remind me that my goal is to be like a river or channel of Spirit energy. I've been using the screen name for over 20 years, and it continues to remind me of my purpose.
Although I'm joining, I'm not sure if I'll be able to keep up, unless it's self-paced.
Thanks for the idea and facilitating it.
@GlenM
Thank you for taking the time to create this series. I can see that you have put a lot of thought and effort into doing so. These concepts are not easy to grasp or explain ,so teaching them is a labour of love.
I feel like humans tend to spend a great majority of our lives resisting the reality of the situation. It is helpful for someone to acknowledge that yes it is painful, challenging and even downright devastating at times but it is what it is and here is how to make peace with it.
I appreciate the fact that you have kept the main language open so that the concepts are still relevant to people who follow a specific faith.
@GlenM 🌊 Part 2 Reflection — Navigating My Own Kayak
Right now, my river feels calm but quietly restless — like it’s whispering that change is near. There’s a gentle rhythm in the flow, yet every ripple reminds me that stillness and movement can coexist.
My rock → My teacher: Uncertainty → Trust.
The unknown used to feel like chaos, but now I see it as a current guiding me somewhere I can’t yet see. I didn’t plan for certain chapters to end, but they taught me how to breathe even when the water gets rough.
When I tried the forgiveness ladder, I found a younger version of myself — small, scared, waiting for reassurance. I told her, “You’re safe now. You can let go.” That moment softened something in me I didn’t realize had grown hard.
Life leveled me up the day I stopped forcing the current and started flowing with it. I’m learning that surrender isn’t weakness — it’s the highest form of strength.
Today I’m grateful for the current that carried me through fear, into a deeper kind of faith — the kind that doesn’t need to see the shore to know it’s there.
✨ Key insight: Every rock I hit teaches me balance. Every rapid humbles me. And every calm reminds me that I’m still afloat — still learning, still becoming.

Great use of the analogy 🥰

@VampireBats

@GlenM
I have to admit, I haven't been as active on the site as earlier, I somehow lost motivation. I really needed some kind of inspiration when I suddenly spotted this series. I immediately liked the metaphor, it reminds me of a choir piece we used to sing (called 'River Song'). I can't wait to start with the first chapter and thanks for this wonderful opportunity :)
@Diana44 please drop a link to that song. would love to hear it! and i hope you find this series meaningful. looking forward to paddling alongside you :)
@Diana44
What an absolutely cool association with your choir song! I would love to hear the song as well!
Dropping a rose for you in appreciation for your post.

@GlenM
@AiluraPhilelove8tear9 I love the way of the River series because ultimately it talks to me about the ebb and flow of life, when sometimes we can find ourselves in deep and rocky waters. It's ok to ask for a paddle- the paddle being an analogy for help, support and knowing you don't have to fight the rough terrain alone 🥰
@Amanda84 💜
Thank you so much for sharing this 🤍 I’ll definitely look into the series and give it a try.😊🌿
@Ailuraphilelove8tear9
You are welcome!
It's a very helpful series 💕
@GlenM
@peachThinker662 I thought of you when I started the way of the River series. The analogy of needing a paddle in life when we have to face turbulent waters. I think this is a very helpful series that might also allow you to see just how far you've come 🥰💜
Thank you. I’ll look into it ❤️
