Just seeking guidance

...See more I'm unsure how to even begin so it may just be absolute waffle.  I am struggling so very much currently. I came out of a DA relationship last year and although I've done all that I can for myself and my children to get us to safety and stabilise myself with seeking support for the trauma caused. Everything has come down crashing hard recently and I am really struggling to regain my focus and stay grounded. My abuser is seeking contact, this is now legal and I'm due to appear in court next week. I'm not ready for any of this. Not ready to relive this, to prove my experience, for all that I've worked on to be for nothing. I've tried so hard to get to a better place physically and mentally, to finally be on the road to healing. My body still reacts to alot of everything but I was getting better. Now I'm to stand in front of my abuser, give evidence and relive it all again on the probability that the court decides whether what I went through was truly DA. Whether my evidence is worthy to show what happened, happened. If all of this was what it was to then decide whether contact is safe. I understand it, I am unable to put myself in a position to lose myself again, go backwards when I've tried all that I can to come so far away from it and stay safe.

my mom almost killed me when i was 15 & im just processing it

...See more tw // strangulation i'm 20F right now and i'm just now processing this i guess. it's affecting me badly, i keep thinking maybe i'm overreacting, but then i also feel this is a bit concerning. when i was fifteen, my parents got into a bad verbal fight. my dad snapped over something tiny, he was just exploding at her & she was just meekly defending herself. it kept going on for a while, so i also snapped and started yelling back at my dad. my mom started hitting me and telling me to shut up, to stop being crazy. i went to the kitchen, my mom followed, still hitting me & then she hugged me briefly. then i went to wash my hands at the sink, my dad yelled something else, so i yanked out the kitchen tap. the fight ended after that i guess, my dad was distracted with the water. i went to my room, my mom followed, she was still hitting & screaming at me. i tried to close the door behind me, she stopped it & came in & closed it behind her. she was lecturing me and asked if i wanted my dad to leave us, if i wanted him to choke her to death. then she strangled me. i remember i thought of loki's death scene from infinity war. i was like wow so thats how it feels like. then the next thing i remember is that i was lying on my carpet, my mom was standing in the doorway, she told me to apologise. i remember specifically that the hallway light was so bright esp bc my room had been dark. she left after that. i think i lay there for a while, i don't really remember. then i tried to sit up and i remember thinking "oh she could have killed me". anyway, i wrote an email apologising to my dad for being so "crazy". i wrote a journal entry about this incident. then i tossed and turned for a few hours before finally going to sleep. the next day, things were okay w my dad, i apologised, he apologised too, told me he loves me yadda yadda. but my mom gave me the silent treatment for most of the day. i tried to be normal w her and tried to strike a conversation, but she just looked at me coldly and asked "you're not going to ask forgiveness from me too?" so i did. i apologised. she was like hmm. she gave me a weird look that made me feel like i was dirt who had dared to hurt her, who had the audacity to hurt her, who had dared to come out of my box. *** that was contempt or smth. i lay awake that night thinking about how to apologise better. and the next day, i apologised AGAIN and told her i was so scared my parents would divorce because they were fighting, and the fighting reminded me of the fights they had because of my father's mother. so all my anger, all my "craziness" was because of that fear. she accepted it. she was normal with me again. i minimised and glossed over this for the past five years. i thought it was just a bad fight. i didn't really remember the choking. i thought it was just me being "crazy". but this year, i reread that journal entry and i guess that brought back some memories. and im like ???? what the actual ***??? and istg this is affecting me so badly, im spiraling so much, not eating well, not sleeping well and reading about strangulation facts and how it increases risk of homicide significantly. and the more i remember, the worse it gets. i thought it had been just 5-6 seconds but i think i may have lost consciousness because i was standing when she strangled me, and the next thing i know is that im on the floor. and she just left me there. i cannot process this. i cannot make eye contact with her for too long because i'm scared she will see what i know. her presence makes me sick. i don't like her touch. i don't like her voice. unfortunately, i still live with her and i still stay in that same room i was strangled in. and i keep thinking about the possibility that she may have felt satisfaction or vindication or triumph or contempt during the strangulation and after, because she finally got to break my defiance and see my terror. i dont know if she did but idk i just suspect it and that makes me feel icked out and sick. some more details: - she gives me the silent treatment a lot, especially if i defy her (even politely saying i don't agree with her). she controls my clothing & hair & medication. - she always talks about how she suffers so much, how we will only know her worth when she's dead, how we should be grateful when she's still alive. she is always the victim. - she is physically similar to me in build & weight, we're both small. - she used to hit me w a stick & slap me hard enough to cut my lip when i was younger. - my dad has never raised a hand to either of us. he yells a lot but he's not physically violent. - my mom always tells me to be quiet & calm when a man is angry, that i have to calm him down rather than making him angrier, that i should be grateful my dad doesn't hit because some men do. - she never apologised or acknowledged the choking. i know if i bring it up to her, she will tell me i was the one who made her do it since i was acting out.   - i think tbh she shows a lot of narcissistic traits i don't know what to think about all this. i keep thinking she could have killed me, i could have died at 15, i was so close to dying. but then i think that i'm overreacting and trying to make my mom into a villain when she isn't. but god i can't stand her. and i feel so guilty for talking about this to a counselor or my friends because it's like i'm betraying her. i feel so guilty especially when she's being nice and caring towards me now. i just cannot process what she did to me. i cannot process how she was able to do that to her own child. who had literally been defending her. i don't know if i'm overreacting.

...See more Okay, so let me tell you this: I've been dealing with loneliness since September, because my parents forced me to stop using social medias until March 2026. You know, I don't have real friends so I can only hang out with friends by using social medias. As a person with social anxiety, finding friends in real life is hard for me so I can only hang out with friends online. I can't even start using social medias again before March 2026 as my online friends would hate me if I do that. Not only that, my dad even forced me to deal with loneliness and told me to be friends with my family members which is stupid for me. I can't wait anymore longer, I think I can only sleep until March.

...See more When I was 9, my parents divorced, and everything went downhill after that. My mom got sick with POTS, but at the time, she didn’t know what it was. And from then on, the way she treated me just got worse. In 5th and 6th grade—especially 5th—I would take a long time on my homework, and instead of helping me, she would yell at me. I would get whooped for bad grades. I remember being up super late, exhausted, and she’d still be yelling. I felt alone, especially after my brother was born—that feeling of being alone carried into 7th and 8th grade. I kept getting bad grades, and she kept whooping me. She never helped with homework, just projects. I felt like I couldn’t go to her, even though she always said I could tell her anything. During that time, we moved in with my grandparents, and it wasn’t the best. Then, 9th grade was terrible. Attended KIPP and struggled every day with the overwhelming amount of homework. I would take too long, and she’d yell and whoop me again. One time, she got so angry that she had me pinned against the wall with her hand around my throat. I told my guidance counselor, and after that, she would make slick comments about it — stuff about foster homes, stuff to make me feel guilty. I don’t remember every detail, but I remember the feeling. Things got a little better in 10th grade, but 11th grade was bad again because I stopped doing my work. I felt like the work had no point to me, and I still don’t fully understand why I felt that way. During this time, she would also say hurtful things. Once, when I was suicidal and she knew I was suicidal, she yelled something along the lines of “unalive yourself for all I care.” I don’t remember the exact words, but it was close. She apologized that day, but it didn’t mean much. These past few months, all these memories keep popping up constantly. I honestly can’t remember any good memories with her — or if there are any, they’re tiny compared to the bad ones. She would go crazy if I didn’t do the dishes before she got home. She broke my game disc and headphones. She made me cut all my hair off in 2017 or 2018. She threw my Xbox off my dresser and threatened to break my stuff. She would hit me. She was constantly angry. She was still sick during a lot of this time, but that doesn’t excuse anything. She never came to me asking what was wrong. She never tried to understand school or why I was struggling. If I got bad grades, she exploded. That’s why I hid my grades—because I was afraid of her. In 2023, our family was going on a cruise. I said yes at first, but then I didn’t want to go because I was afraid of her yelling at me the whole time. When I told her, she got mad. This is the same person who told me I could come to her about anything, who claimed to respect honesty. After that, it became really hard to come to her about anything or even connect with her. I feel constant anger toward her. This was also the year my father died. I feel alone as ever. I told her once about some of the things she did, and she brushed it off. She said I “was emotional as a kid.” When I brought up her cutting all my hair, she said it didn’t matter because my hair is long now. She always minimized things. She also called me a disappointment and cursed a lot. She compared me to her best friend’s kids — how they cooked for their mom, how they did this and that. I told her to stop, and eventually she stopped, but she still said things sometimes — like commenting about other kids driving when I didn’t have my license. I honestly believe she failed me and was a terrible parent. I was also scared to tell her things because she would throw them back in my face or make slick comments. She would say I’m “not about my business” and that she’s a “go-getter.” But she never showed me how to do anything. If my little brother annoyed me and I hit him lightly, she would call me abusive toward him. When I wanted to major in physics and become a nuclear physicist, she told me to be realistic because I procrastinated. She also used to tell me I should fear her when I was younger. The most confusing part is that she can be caring and loving, like how she was when I was a kid before the divorce, but all the bad that happened overshadows it, and I feel a disconnect. She apologized for things, and I said it was okay, but I didn’t mean it. I just said it and never really forgave. I feel like I’m overreacting, maybe. Am I overreacting? Advice?

...See more Hi. I’m from Kyrgyzstan. I’m going through a very hard time and I just need someone to listen. My father hits me and yells at me, even when I’m sick. My mother screams a lot and has emotional breakdowns. I feel completely alone and hopeless. I’m sick, I have problems with my kidneys, heart, and throat, and I cry almost every day. Also, I have to take care of cats that my brother brought home, and it’s too much for me. I’m exhausted physically and emotionally.

...See more my mother shes always been like this, for as long as ive known her but its defi exacerbated over the years... i think i was 7, the first time she said it to me... i hadnt studied for half an hour, and she was in a bad mood.. she told me to jump off the balcony and do the world a favour by getting rid of a useless waste of space... after that it only got worse... it kept compounding, with her saying even meaner things, hitting me harder too... now i am fifteen, clueless abt how ive come this far... bcoz im in 10th (im indian so i have extremely important exams this year), im being pressurized to such an extent and i genuinely cant study bro i have mini panic attacks every time i open my science book and im scared.

...See more It's funny how i can brave through times much tougher yet somehow this trivial incident left me so adversely affected....  My mother is abusive - both physically and emotionally - and, although most people are, im no stranger to the fact.  Our school is hosting its very first youth parliament and im so very proud to say that im a part of the core as the director of design:) mum ofc can't say the same for shr discouraged me every step of the way, going as far as talking to my teachers to forbid me from doing any extracurriculars so that i cud focus on my studies... However, she's an extremely early sleeper so i dedicate the few hours till 12am to working on them which is how I've been able to keep up on my extracurriculars... She still thinks im studying after she sleeps, which has been the reason for many a beating:( Despite her best attempts, the youth parliament session is on Wednesday and Thursday and im going.... Obv we're gonna be wearing Indian formals and as i was picking my outfit, she stormed in, insulting me. She proceeded to compare me with my cousins who are "far more successful than me" (they're not and anyway they have better parents, MOTHER), body shame me by calling me fat (she likes to say it js coz i have a larger bust and she knows im insecure abt it) and tell me im a disgrace to. Female empowerment and I'd be better off unaliving myself. And for some reason this encounter stung more than the others. She's said similar things to me before and i thought I'd gotten quite used to it... Apparently not:( I love hobbies in general... I wanna try everything, so im the head of graphic design at our school newspaper, my best friend and i opened an *** org together to educate ppl abt stuff they'll use in the real world, and i publish a book of my poetry every year (a series im yet to tell my parents abt)... Ugh im not sure whats going on with me... I mean 15 years of living with her abd i haven't learned a damned thing:( Maybe i feel unappreciated by mum... Idk her POV rlly so i dont wanna judge but like i js wanted to be a kid... And ik a lot of its not related to the stream i wanna take (PCM+CS) but i enjoy it and i get exposure so why cudnt she js support me for once? 🥺

...See more Long history short I've been living with DV (emotional, psychological, verbal, financial, a tad of physical - mostly pushing, shoving, not allowing me to leave a room and an awful lot of insanely suffocating coercive control for just over 3 years now. All this on top of losing both of my parents in a space of 9 months last year. 😔 I've fled to a refuge with my toddler before, but unfortunately I did come back after 2 days. He promised he would change and I believed him. I've been back for 6 months now and around two months ago I realised that the next time it will be for good so xoncated police this time too. I know I cannot do it alone and l've no one in this country I decided to live.  The nights are the hardest. When I fled last time, my anxiety went into overdrive and the panick attacks were looming. I didn't sleep for the full 48 hours I was there  - even with prescribed medication!! So I was left trying to care for my then 2.5-year-old in a place that was dirty, cold, and so very isolating. My child was absolutely fine and didn't even ask about his dad — but I was THIS close to lose my mind. One night I even called the Samaritans because I felt so desperate, but no one ever picked up. This time, I know I need to prepare better. I need tools, strategies, and support networks in place for when I flee again, to be able to cope with the extreme anxiety, the long nights, the overwhelm, and the weight of caring for my little one while trying to rebuild from scratch.( I’ve no work, no friends or family here as he isolated me from everything). So that’s why I’m here - to be able to have support and give support to people like me. Thank you for reading 💕

(It is fine to vent and to express appropriate anger, but as curse words have often been used during abusive and traumatic experiences, we ask members and listeners to asterisk abusive/curse words to avoid triggering and upsetting members where possible and to maintain a respectful environment and to encourage positive and healthy expression of anger.)
