You Aren’t Broken, You Have a Care Deficit: Introducing the Care Calculator

User Profile: GlenM
GlenM June 19th

Hello Community!

A few weeks back I shared a post with you here called "Care is Electricity." The idea was simple. After all these years, I've come to believe the most powerful thing in healing isn't technique. It's care. One person actually giving a damn about another. The response from you and others surprised me. Many said something like: "I've always felt this was true, I just never had words for it."

That stuck with me and made me think more about next steps. Because having words for something still doesn't tell you what to do about it.

If you're going through a breakup, or you lost someone, or work is burying you, knowing that care matters doesn't tell you how much you need, whether you're getting enough, or where to go find more.

We've got tools for everything else. You want to know if you can afford a house, there's a mortgage calculator. If you are trying to track your health you can look at your blood pressure, or measure your BMI index. If you want to know how much stress you're under, there's the Holmes-Rahe stress inventory, which has been around since 1967. It adds up your big life events and tells you how much strain you're carrying.

But Holmes-Rahe always stops in a strange place. You take it, you add up your number, and it basically says "yes, you're under a lot, good luck." Nobody ever built the other half. You're carrying all this, so how much care do you actually need to get through it? What do you already have? Where are the holes?

We just built that part. We're calling it the Care Calculator.

It's three steps. First you mark what's going on in your life, the same kinds of events Holmes and Rahe named, plus a few they couldn't have seen coming in 1967. Then you map your care. You go through the people and places in your life, your partner, your family, a close friend, a faith community, a support group, a therapist, listeners/groups here on 7 Cups, and you get honest about how often each one really shows up. Not how much they love you in theory. How often care is actually reaching you right now. Then you see two bars next to each other. What you need, and what you have. And whatever space sits in between.

That space is the whole point.

When you can finally see it, something loosens. If you are carrying a huge weight and getting next to nothing back, of course you're wiped out. That's not a flaw in you. It's a gap. And gaps can get filled.

That shift, from "what is wrong with me" to "I don't have enough care right now," might be the most important thing this tool does.

Let me tell you a quick story about why I believe in this. This is just one story of a close friend. We have all seen similar stories happen here on 7 Cups.

Years ago a close friend of mine was deep in addiction. It had swallowed his life. He had people staying with him who were using him, and he'd lost his grip on what was real. His mom went in and pulled him out. I drove back and helped him move, partly on the old recovery wisdom that sometimes you have to get away from the places and people tied to using. It was a long road. There were stretches where I wasn't sure he'd make it.

But he came back, slowly. And when I look at what actually carried him, it was never one thing. There was a psychiatrist. There was therapy. There were NA meetings. There was his family, and a faith group that took him in and held on to him. Today he's working full-time, training to be a substance use counselor, and reaching back for other people stuck in the same hole. I'm about as proud of him as I can be. In my bones, proud!

No single care connection saved my friend. A whole bunch of them, carrying current at the same time, over years, did.

That is the heart of this thing. It counts every source of care as real.

There's a quiet ranking in mental health, where professional therapy sits at the top and everything else gets called "support." Nice to have, but not the real medicine. I don't buy that. I'm not knocking therapy. Good therapists do things a friend or a volunteer can't, and some situations need exactly that kind of help. Therapy belongs on the map. It just isn't the whole map. What decades of research keep showing is that the relationship itself is what heals. The feeling that somebody is in it with you. That's the care current, and it doesn't need a license. It can come from a sister who calls every Sunday, a small group in your faith community, or a stranger on 7 Cups who decided to spend their night listening to you. Nobody needs one perfect source of care. We just need enough of them.

Here is something to keep in mind. A mortgage calculator runs on real math. Care doesn't work like that. The stress side of this leans on decades of research, but the care side is our first honest guess. They're rough numbers meant to help you see your own situation, not some clinical readout. We're putting them out in the open on purpose, and we're asking researchers who study this to help us sharpen them. Treat it as a mirror or a reflection tool, not a verdict.

And if it shows you a big gap, don't panic. Instead, look honestly at where more care could come from. Sometimes it's already around you and people just don't know how hard things have become for you. A lot of folks want to show up, they only need to be let in. Sometimes it's a support group, or a faith community, or a listener who's walked your road. And sometimes the load is heavy enough that you need a professional, and that's okay too. If you're in real danger or thinking about hurting yourself, please reach out to a crisis line or emergency services right now. A calculator isn't the place for that.

Here's what thirteen years with this community has taught me. Nobody should have to struggle or white-knuckle their way through the hardest parts of life alone. But people do it every single day, not because the care isn't out there, but because they can't see what they need or where to find it. They sit in the dark blaming themselves when the real problem is just that not enough care electricity is coming through.

This won't fix all of that on its own. It's an early version, and the numbers still need real research behind them. But if it helps even one person stop asking "what's wrong with me" and start asking "where can I find more care," that's enough for me.

I'd love for you to try it and tell me what feels right and what feels off. You all are the reason it exists, and your read on it matters to me. Not everything we try and do here works. We keep trying. This is another attempt. If it has value for you and helps, then please let us know. If you have recommendations on how to make it stronger, then please share those as well. And a big shout out to @AnnaSilverberg and @InternalAcceptance for specific feedback and help on this post and calculator!

@GlenM This is a great way to reflect on some of the stressors we face and the current support we have as compared to how we can deliberately increase care or be aware of more resources.

I do want to say that my own results show a significant gap but that I am faring well and did still benefit from understanding how I could take steps in adding some care units into my weekly focus.

Interested to see what everyone else thinks!

Not to be the one to drag this idea but this concerns me. Why are we putting scores on things that people are struggling with? I don’t know how many times I’ve told people it’s not a competition, you’re experience is just as valid as someone else’s, it’s not about who has it “worse”, etc. It’s all too common that people invalidate and disregard their own struggles because they feel like they aren’t “bad enough”. This “Care Calculator” is just confirming that. This is a real problem that can actually hurt people.

To anyone that looks at or uses this tool and sees low scores next to things you’re struggling with, or sees that the thing you’re struggling with didn’t even make the list, what you’re going through is just as valid as what anyone else is going through. Struggles and hardships don’t have severity ratings in real life. A low number next to what you’re going through does not minimize the stress and pain it causes you. I’m sorry to anyone this tool may cause harm to.

@Shadow I totally see where you are coming from, and you're right... just because one may score "low" on the care calculator on their stress level doesn't dismiss the pain and hurt they are feeling for whatever reason. It doesn't diminish that and I'm sorry you felt this way. I, personally, didn't take it this way. I took it as it was intended to be a tool. Anyway, I definitely appreciate you speaking out in case there's others who may feel the same. ❤️

@Shadow hey there! i can understand where you are coming from. this is a stress scale. we didn't create it. we are just using it to help people better understand the stress load they are carrying. the corresponding point is to then help people see that there isn't anything wrong with them and there is nothing to be ashamed about; they just would benefit from more care. and then the goal is to help them find more care. the scale / calculator is not at all designed to make the stress someone is carrying feel less than. we actually added 2 additions to make this more to the point. the question at the end of the first page is a stress-appraisal question. that impacts the results page. the other thing we added was specific language around eating and sleeping. that also impacts the results page. thank you for trying it and for the feedback!

@Shadow That is a fair assessment to make. On the other hand, it could validate people who struggle to see their problems as valid no matter how high or low it is. I know I flip-flop a lot about the seriousness of my own stressers.

@GlenM Of everything I just read from your entire post, this is what speaks to me loudest:

"A lot of folks want to show up, they only need to be let in."

Because it's nothing but the truth, in my case. I know that for most of my life I have had under a handful of people I could honestly count on. And even now, the 2 of my biggest support systems are the ones I push away the most. Granted, I'm a private person, an introvert, a person so used to fighting and overcoming quiet battles but only because I've had God with me. Only because something inside my core knows that there is better for me. That's where my internal battles take place.

Another thing you mentioned is that there is more than therapy. You're right-- because, while it can be beneficial... therapy and meds have never helped me. Not once. But the unity, unconditional love, acceptance of very few people in my life, God, prayer, crying, etc played a part collectively. Even down to the 7 Cups community, I don't utilize my member account to even seek personal support, but just the love and engagement through my buddies in forumland really does add to my day and make me smile. (Don't mind my long run on sentence. 😂) A true support system is extremely important and it is healing, just as touch is in real life. There's power in it. It's one thing to know, another thing to feel it. We all need people even when we think we don't. Funny though how important is, even though it's the people who have hurt us.

I tried the care calculator just for giggles and curiosity, let's just say... yea, I guess I am in need of lots of care. 🤣 600+ stress score and that's being nice, but I've always been a strong Desiree and get through things. May take a long time, but I know God has always seen me through. That's fact for me. I've been so used to certain things that sometimes the things I just accept as normal because it's normal for me. Then again, Desiree here can't really say she is "normal". I can just be me. 😆

Anyway, I also wanted to say that I am extremely proud of your friend and wish him all the best. The fact he had such a strong support system 💪 is wonderful that it helped him. 👏 Bravo!

@YourCaringConfidant you are indeed a VERY STRONG Desiree!

I think for those of us that have grown up in tough situations we learn that we have to be strong and help others. it is harder for us to lean on others for help. in interpersonal psychology research, there is this idea that is what is predictable feels "good" even if it isn't necessarily "good" for us. one thing that can help here is making small bets/risks to see if the other person shows up to gradually build trust so it doesn't feel as risky.

and 100% on this:

Even down to the 7 Cups community, I don't utilize my member account to even seek personal support, but just the love and engagement through my buddies in forumland really does add to my day and make me smile. (Don't mind my long run on sentence. 😂) A true support system is extremely important and it is healing, just as touch is in real life. There's power in it

There is absolute power in it! we are all shining examples of that being the case!

I also agree with you on the spiritual front. I think there is such thing as vertical electricity that we can then share horizontally :). Not as much understood about this, but clearly many people feel very supported by their religion and/or spirituality!

Thank you for trying it and for proving your feedback. And thank you for charging us up!

@cheerfulKiwi1776 thank you for your kind words and for trying it out! I think it is okay to share your thoughts, what you like, and what you don't like. You can also share general results, but I probably wouldn't share details. I think it is okay if you want to, but your general sense of things will likely help us just as much as results if you are looking for feedback. Thanks again!

@GlenM

For starters i want to say it liked it but I think maybe you could put a thing saying: type your own thing because it might not cover everything.

My results where... bad... really bad. But I didn't expect anything else i knew it. Also I dont mind sharing them because I m not ashamed of it.

Nothing to be ashamed of! I think everyone here has been very overwhelmed with less resources. I was last week! So important to keep timing in mind too. I’m glad you are here and hopefully getting support! I think verified listeners and sharing circles are great. Many things on here can give you a resource boost! They certainly help me out!

I offer hugs?

I hope you wont feel ashamed or guilty or anything. My care balance is a little frightening, too. We cupsers are here for you, tho, to try and tip the balance a little in your favour. A little care is better than none, i think

@GlenM

Sir, you amaze me with every one of your posts.

The earnestness of this one hit me hard, after the day I had. This calculator is a genuine effort on your part to help, in any way you can. It's more than most do. Its a major part of what alot of us need

I've been calling myself selfish for not being okay, but this calculator really smacked me on the head. I felt distinctly embarrased as I filled in my care sources— to put it mildly, no wonder I feel like someone ran a truck over my heart.

I'm grateful for friends and family, but their care isn't reaching me. Something's wrong with the connection and Im cut off somehow. I dont really know what to do about that, but this is a clear reminder to do something.

I dont know if others will find this calculator as useful as I did, but I know how meaningful its existence is. We owe you much for all of your care, and your team's.

I hope we all find the care we need 🤍

Sorry to hear about your heart! (Picks it up, brushes it off, and gives it back to you with a hug).

have you noticed support from others in the past that was more helpful than it is now? One idea is to look at what changed if that is the case.

thank you for your encouragement!!

I've lost some friends, and theres some seperation in the family (not fighting type, think financial situation type) so we see each other less. And i might...be a little less honest about how Im doing. Its hard.

@GlenM I apologize ahead of time if this seems like an odd or clueless question, I'm new here although I've known about seven cups for a long time. But I have a question about the calculator, what if we don't have a listed thing like what if there's an experience that the person has and there's no actual that in the list? And we just pick something that's as close as we can get to it or maybe at our own? Maybe in our journal or something? And probably I'm going to go back to the post where the calculator is and then I'm going to see where it says "if you don't see your issue listed..." Because that's how the entire week has operated for me! Have a great weekend.

@brightOwl7382 great question! and no need to apologize. I think we are going to add a field where people can enter new items. we won't be able to apply a weight to them. and we'll also address that on the results page as well.

Dear @GlenM, @AnnaSilverberg, and @InternalAcceptence, thank you all so much. This really validated what I kinda knew intuitively, it indicated I'm getting a 3rd of the care I need each week.

We all deserve care+support throughout our lives. I've shared this calculator with my irl friends and plan to have a discussion in the near future with them.

Thank you again so much. I plan to add this to my regular tool box.
