July 2025 Community Update!
Hello Crew!
The summer is here! It was mild here through mid-June which was a small miracle and now the heat is fully turned on. I hope you are all staying cool!
The big news this month is that we turn 12. We are in the double digits, but not quite a teenager yet. Just kidding, I think startup years are a little like dog years. One year for a dog is equal to 7. I’m not sure how long a startup year is, it has got to be at least 1.5 or 2 years.
There is an obscure idea called the “Lindy Effect” - it was popularized by one of my favorite authors, Nassim Taleb. Here is a summary:
The Lindy Effect, in essence, suggests that the longer something non-perishable (like an idea, technology, or even a company) has existed, the longer it's likely to continue existing in the future.
The Lindy Effect suggests that the time of something that has survived can be doubled. The longer something is relevant the longer it will remain relevant. For example, think of religious/spiritual writing or the classics. Much of this information continues to be relevant and read by billions of people regularly.
On the other hand, think of a popular book or movie that shoots up in popularity, but then quickly fades.
These are examples of the Lindy Effect. We are 12 now and the principle suggests that we will live to be 24. Interesting right?!
I hope to see all of you in our celebrations. Thank you for being a part of our fabric and reminding us to continue to stay focused on what matters and what is important - generosity, compassion, and community.
With deep gratitude,
Glen

For forum activities, we have the Paper Plate Awards & Help Us Write Our Story!
We will be hosting an Admin Team chatroom event! With it, we’re bringing back the High Five Live! Find out what it is, submit a shoutout or two, and join us!
And lastly, I will be making a big update to our Help Center database this next quarter, and I need your help to decide what we will include! See things we’re missing? Check out this post and make suggestions.

It has been an eventful month for teens! Sensory Snapshot was launched as a weekly forum series encouraging everyone to pause and notice the world through their senses, starting with sound. We also introduced 3 Good Things, a thread where teens can reflect on recent wins, no matter how big or small. Two open chats were hosted to explore this further, and the stories shared have been meaningful and uplifting. Thank you to all who joined in. We look forward to seeing even more participation in the coming weeks.
Additionally, Carnegie Mellon University invited U.S.-based listeners to take part in a research study aimed at improving listener conversations. We appreciate everyone who showed interest and supported this initiative. On the leadership side, we welcomed @Ivy229 as an Academy Project Agent. Ivy will be helping with the upcoming Academy Awards as we prepare to recognize and celebrate contributions from across the community.

This month, the GS team worked hard to restructure and improve the room supporters' onboarding process. We announced the new post with all the information an applicant would need to know to apply for the role. You can check out the application post to learn more: Click here!
On the Sharing Circle front, we posted a post to spread the word about Sharing Circle with the hope that it reaches out to all who need the support and they join the chat to share and get the much-needed support and comfort. We are grateful to the entire Sharing Circle community for their compassionate presence and support every hour and every day in the Sharing Circle Chat. If you know someone who could find it helpful, please encourage them to check out Sharing Circle.
On the leadership front, we onboarded 2 group chat moderators and 5 room supporters. Thank you all for stepping up and supporting the group chats and their participants. Also, the GS team is working on some initiatives similar to Always Here to increase the presence and support in the Depression Support, Member Community Room, and a few more group chats. We will keep you updated with more information at the earliest.

This month, we re-launched the Exploration Garden as a closed group. Anyone can gain access by meeting the simple eligibilit|y and filling out an application form.
We are also tying different community features into an experience for various topics - these will form a new feature called Growth Circles. We will be launching our first Growth Circle during the first week of July.
July will be filled with 7 Cups Birthday events, and as words are as powerful as appreciation and celebration, I invite you to submit your words for 7 Cups and your community experience here so that we can look back on the 12 most powerful/relatable words together during our birthday events.

Thank you for the updates as well as for all of the hard work...front of the house as well as back!
Happy Birthday 🥳 7 cups! Oh my, how you have grown! A big ole 12 you are this year. Hey, just think, one more year and you'll be able to be a member on the teen side 😁.
*high fives* 😊 and *hugs* ❤️
@GlenM
a perishable thing is either perishable or is not. The longer a non perishable thing exists does not change or influence its susceptibility to becoming perishable. Take asbestos for example..
almost everything is perishable and that’s ok.
The growth of a space that cultivates and provides support in otherwise unsupportive and isolated world, its perishable unfortunately. It’s only perishable when it becomes not required. Currently such a trajectory is unlikely due to life and societal challenges and new advances in technologies that enable those who would otherwise would suffer alone the option not to.
the relevance is the deciding factor. If the creator of old txt was suddenly standing before those who held it close. With a new message that was different, a message that old txt is no longer relevant of important . Such txt has now perished in such a circumstance.
Reach also is a heavy influence in longevity , a perishable idea in one perishes much more rapidly than a group who believe the same. The time/longevity comes second to main determining factor as reach. Without the reach the time is not influenced.
wow this Lindy effect got my brain melting down trying to understand it and its relevance, and truth in such a claim..
Just because cups survived I don’t believe will afford it a definitive future existence. It’s unlikely, but hey maybe a possibility. There’s much deeper things that has enabled the ability to write this post in response.. you should take more credit than a Lindy effect.
@GlenM
