Practing a beginners mindset

...See more A beginner's mindset in Buddhism or Zen is known as "don't-know mind" or shoshin. This means approaching a task, relationships, and learning with an eager mind and being non-judgmental. This is where you begin to let go of assumptions and have a free attitude. A beginner's mind is known to say, "I wonder how this works," to where an expert's mind is saying, "I already know how this works." A person's beginner mind needs to slow down and process what is being done or said. We just need to think before saying or acting out our emotions. We can begin using our mindset by looking at an object and pretending we never saw it. We begin to look at the shape, colors, and textures of the object. We can begin to notice our "what if" stance, asking ourselves, "What if I am wrong?" Common types of mindset: Growth vs. fixed mindset: Believing your talents are developed through hard work. Abundance vs. scarcity mindset: believing there is success, resources, and opportunities rather than thinking in a negative way. Stress Mindset: Viewing stress in a negative way rather than viewing it in a positive and learning way. How can we build our mindset where it is safe for us to have? How to play: * Answer the current sense prompt (see list below). * Tag 1–2 friends 7cups friends of yours so they can add their own answers. * After answering, move to the next sense in the list. Once all 5 senses are done, start back at 👀 again. ...See more Hello beautiful Mindfulness Community Kudos to everyone who reached out to this site to get support and also support themselves and others. It's amazing to see how compassionate you are in the discussions and open chats! You are truly lovely people! The theme of today's Member Appreciation Day in Mindfulness is Compassion and Acceptance, so let's spend some moments on reflecting on it. We all go through rough patches in our lives, have to cope with situations we never expected, situations we do not want but cannot change at that time, see loved ones hurting without being able to take away their pain, we might even start to dislike ourselves, feel unable to accept our looks, our traits, just the way we are. It hurts and it is stressful, and often there’s no quick fix or easy solution. However, we can become our own friend, be our own companion to help us through. What kind of companion would you like by your side if you go through such a time? The kind of companion who says, with a cold, uncaring voice, “Suck it up, princess. I don’t want to hear your whining, or the kind of companion who says, with a kind and caring voice, “This is really tough, I’m here for you” , the kind of voice that tells you “Right now in this moment you can’t change things, only acceptance can help to prevent adding more suffering to your pain but it doesn't mean that you can't work on changing things” ? Today I like to ask everyone to share some words of compassion for themselves and others and something about themselves they accept. Let me start I accept my sensitivity, which was not always easy for me. I learned here to be much more compassionate toward myself and made this one of my priorities. I hope everyone on the site will find comfort and peace and accept themselves as they are. The Mindfulness Center welcomes you to a place where it is okay to just be, and not worry about 100 things. You can observe nature or your own room, follow your breath going in and out, or be aware of your feet touching the sidewalk as you head home. It is all mindfulness. 

There are no hard and fast rules on how to be mindful, and you do not have to do anything a certain way. There are guidelines to help us stay on the path of mindfulness, like in the Daily Checkins, where team members share insights and tips about mindfulness. You can join in the discussions there, or in any of the forum threads. 

You will also find videos in the resource center that talk about what is mindfulness and guide us on a journey to having an actual experience right now of what it feels like to be free of our “thought train”, as we let ourselves go and relax a bit. If all of this sounds good, join us for hosted sessions in which you can discuss and experience mindfulness first hand.

Community Guidelines

Stop and breath. Respect yourself and have compassion for what you are going through. 

Notice what is happening around you that your senses are telling you. Feel the breath go in and go out.

Feel good about yourself. Life has brought you on a journey up to here. That is reason to celebrate and appreciate all that life offers. And listen and feel the breath!
