Tips for Dealing With Unhealthy and Abusive Relationships
by QuietMagic

...See more [TW: discussion of abuse] ------------------------- Types of relationships Relationships can be healthy, unhealthy, or abusive. 1) Healthy relationships Healthy relationships are not perfect, but most of the time they’ll have the following qualities: Respect, trust, and safety * Feeling supported by your partner and like you can rely on them * Maintaining respect even when there are differences or disagreements * Equal power when it comes to decision-making * Feeling like it is safe to be vulnerable and have emotional closeness Open communication * Being able to share things honestly without fearing punishment or ridicule * Being able to discuss sensitive topics like physical intimacy and economic/financial arrangements * Both people listen and try to understand and empathize with the other person's perspective Healthy boundaries * Respect for boundaries * Enjoy spending time together but can be happy apart * Okay to have some privacy and personal space * Okay to have your own interests, hobbies, and relationships with friends/family 2) Unhealthy relationships Unhealthy relationships lack some of the qualities listed above that are present in healthy relationships, for example: Lack of respect, trust, or safety * Not being able to explore or share feelings safely * Feeling like partner won't be supportive or listen if you share things * Feeling like if you share vulnerable things, your partner will use them against you * One person has all of the power to make decisions or is unwilling to compromise * One person’s needs and opinions are dismissed Communication issues * Not listening to what the other person has to say or having empathy * Ignoring, disrespecting, or minimizing feelings * Disagreements often turn into intense, hurtful fights * Frequent arguments without resolution * Avoiding discussing problems * Lying or dishonesty * Using insults, harsh criticism, or words designed to hurt during arguments Lack of respect for boundaries * Being coerced into doing things you don't want to do * Being pressured into only spending time with your partner * Strong jealousy and guilt-tripping when spending time with other people or on your own hobbies and interests * Being pressured into intimate or sexual activity * Invasion of privacy * Lack of respect for personal space or belongings 3) Abusive relationships Abusive relationships are similar to unhealthy relationships but also include a pattern of one person manipulating or frightening the other, usually to maintain power and control. Destruction of safety and trust * Threats (or acting on threats) to hurt you, themselves, loved ones, or pets * Threats (or acting on threats) to destroy things you own * Threats (or acting on threats) to spread rumors, share secrets, or share private photos/videos * Physical harm such as hitting, slapping, pushing, or restraining against your will * Physical or sexual touching that you do not consent to Harmful communication * Saying degrading, intimidating, demeaning, or humiliating things * Treating ideas, feelings, and experiences with contempt * Intolerance of disagreement and dismissing perspective completely * Blaming you for their problems and making you feel responsible for their behavior Absence of boundaries: isolation * Trying to prevent you from seeing friends/family or go to school/work * Pressuring to spend all of your time with them or guilt-tripping for not doing so * Trying to persuade you that other relationships don't matter or that they are the only one who cares about you * Telling you to not talk to anyone else or reach out for help about the relationship Absence of boundaries: control * Reading text messages, e-mails, or social media messages without permission * Trying to monitor and control what you wear, where you go, and who you spend time with * Expressing extreme jealousy and constantly checking up on you ------------------------- Tips for unhealthy relationships 1) Deciding whether to stay in a relationship If you’ve been trying to work on the relationship for a while, it may be worth asking whether the relationship is worth keeping. Some signs that the relationship is still worth working on and trying to improve: * You’re both willing to accept responsibility for things that need improving and work on trying to change them * You both haven’t given up on trying to improve things * You still trust each other enough to be vulnerable and forgive past mistakes * You still care about each other’s well-being * You’re still emotionally close Some signs that the relationship may not be worth trying to save: * You’ve both given up on things improving * You’re no longer emotionally or physically close * You have insurmountable differences in your values and goals * You no longer trust each other * It’s difficult to imagine being together in the future * The relationship has become abusive 2) Healthy communication Couples who have lasting and satisfying relationships tend to follow certain patterns in how they communicate with one another. Use “LARA” for difficult conversations: * Listen: listen with the goal of understanding * Affirm: confirm that you understand what's been said and try to find common ground or something they’ve shared that you can agree with * Respond: respond directly to any concerns or questions they’ve shared rather than talking past what they’ve said * Add: add your own perspective Use “I” statements: * This means using phrases like “I feel”, “I think”, and “I believe” when sharing things or giving feedback * This can help to avoid blaming or attacking the other person while communicating Use assertive communication: This is one of four communication styles: * Passive communication: being hesitant to share things; can lead to unmet needs * Aggressive communication: disregarding the other person's feelings; can lead to increased conflict * Passive-aggressive communication: expressing frustration indirectly (e.g. sarcasm, silence, subtle jabs); can create confusion or distrust * Assertive communication: expressing needs and feelings clearly while respecting the other person's perspective; helps build understanding and resolve conflicts 3) Healthy boundaries Boundaries are the limits, rules, and expectations that we establish for relationships with others. Some examples of boundaries: * Freedom to have your own thoughts or opinions * Limits on how much time you spend with someone * Control over privacy, space, and your body * Limits on what topics you are willing to discuss * Limits on how much emotional support you offer someone else One framework that can be used for communicating boundaries is DEAR MAN: * Describe: describe the situation * Express: express your feelings * Assert: state what you want * Reinforce: explain how the other person will benefit * Mindful: stay focused on your goal * Appear confident: present yourself as confident * Negotiate: be flexible and open to alternative solutions 4) Self-care Self-care is doing things that help with taking care of your well-being. Some benefits of self-care in the context of relationships: * Can help build resilience to stress so that difficult interactions don't affect you as much * Can help you recharge and recover after difficult interactions * Can help you have the personal resources to be able to engage with people effectively Some examples of self-care: * Taking care of your body through exercise, diet, and sleep * Setting aside some time for yourself to engage in hobbies or activities that bring you joy or relaxation * Connecting with friends or loved ones you enjoy spending time with * Acknowledging and processing emotions, for example through journaling or talking to a therapist * Engaging in spiritual practices like prayer, mindfulness, meditation, or yoga ------------------------- Tips for abusive relationships Why people stay in abusive relationships People in abusive situations often have good reasons for staying: * Fear of physical harm/injury if they try to leave * Fear of harm to friends, family, pets, or people who are trying to help them leaving * Fear of abuser taking away children or the challenges of being a single parent * Not having the means to leave or live alone, financial dependence on abuser * Having established relative control within the abusive situation (e.g. being able to predict partner's moods and skillfully manage them to minimize abuse) * Abuser has promised that things will get better or that abuse won't happen again * Feeling guilt at the idea of abandoning abuser or feeling a responsibility to help them * Caring for partner and still feeling love toward them and wanting the relationship to work * Feeling like they deserve the abuse or won't find anything better if they leave Staying safe while in an abusive relationship These are some things that can be helpful if you are not able or willing to leave an abusive relationship: * Find safe ways to communicate with friends and family (e.g. private phone, computer in a safe/trusted place) * Have a safety plan for different situations (e.g. what to do during incidents, keeping children safe). Here are a couple resources that might be helpful: https://www.dvccct.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Domestic-Violence-Safety-Plan-DVCC-.pdf https://www.courts.oregon.gov/programs/family/domestic-violence/Documents/DVSafetyPlan.pdf * Reach out for support to a crisis line, counselor, advocacy group, or local services * Build as strong of a social support network as your partner will allow * Be kind to yourself and engage in self-care activities as you're able to [You can also review the tips listed above for unhealthy relationships and see if there are any items there that feel helpful or like you’d be able to implement them without risking your safety.] Leaving an abusive relationship These are some things that can be helpful if you are considering or planning to leave an abusive relationship: * Use a secure phone or computer while researching and planning how to leave * Notify trusted friends, family, and coworkers of your situation and any plans you have * Decide where you'll go. Domestic violence shelters can temporarily provide for living needs and help provide referrals to other services (e.g. legal help, counseling/-support, child care, employment programs, etc.). You may also be able to find long-term housing options or assistance programs. * Pack an emergency bag with essentials (e.g. clothes, medication, documents, items for children) * If able to do so without causing suspicion, change the passwords to your e-mail, social media, and financial accounts * Have a safety plan for different situations that might occur after you leave. Here are a couple resources that might be helpful: https://www.dvccct.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Domestic-Violence-Safety-Plan-DVCC-.pdf https://www.courts.oregon.gov/programs/family/domestic-violence/Documents/DVSafetyPlan.pdf [Note: these tips mostly apply to domestic abuse situations where someone is living with their abuser] ------------------------- Sources The information above is condensed from the following resources. ...See more I have this one friend that we are close but knowing that she has others makes me feel like I am just a side friend, and it forms some sort of hatred and jealousy towards the person. I know it sounds *** but unfortunately, it's true. I haven't had a best friend in a long time and cannot go back that, but it's hard knowing that I am alone and don't have anyone to talk to everyday or share my thoughts and feelings with.

...See more I don't even know where to start my life is a mess right now... So basically I didn't have the most perfect childhood; I had a boyfriend when I was 11 (I know that's not ideal) and when we were gonna become official  I knew I was doing the wrong thing so I talked about it to someone, the only person I trusted, my best friend and she started screaming at me and she told me it was wrong... it's not like I was acutally gonna do whatever I was gonna do cuz I always knew it was wrong. But he was my best friend before for almost a year and I didnt wanna hurt him. i even talked to him but he wouldn't listen. I was stuck. But I had to say no. I just had to. There was no choice. I was the eldest daughter of my family and they had high expectations of me. If they found out I was dating, they'd feel so bad. They really trust me. So I told him no but he wouldn't even hear the reason. He said he didn't wanna talk to me. I was completely alone. And then my best friend turned her back on me and.... I heard him admitting to someone that he liked her just because someone told him that she used to like him and of course he would say yes, she was the most popular girl in the school. Everyone..... even my friends went behind my back to talk about how I was paranoid said no to him without reason. E veryone went with the popular girl. And honestly, I feel like it would have been so much better if she had just talked it out. Now when I look back; I feel like I should have noticed the smile of her face when I told her what happened. I should have believed my classmate who told me she talked *** about me behind my back. Annnnnnnndddddddd the worst parttttt; YES IT GETS WORSE. The only friend group that I had was in my society and I had to shift to a place which was so quiet cuz there wasn't ANYONE and I mean NO ONE to talk to. I was completely stranded. And I didn't know how to deal with a breakup and no one to tell me how eventually my mom found out because of a chit and I'd rather no say what happened after. All I know is it took 2 years to heal that wound alone, and I'm still going through it's affect. The other relationship was not ideal either. I liked someone they liked me back but the day we admitted it was the very last day he was gonna be around so he shifted. Adn we did long distance but it wasn't working. his parents were abusive so I was kinda worried about him and then one day I realized i was just burdening him and I broke up over text. I sent like 20 msgs hoping he'll understand but he was disappointed in me( and thought i did it cuz i liked someone else) and I guess he should be because I just gave up. Maybe I'm going wrong somewhere cuz I'm always the problem. Now I just avoid talking to the guy i like cuz I know it'll never work. I'll just hurt him and pushing away is the best thing can do. Currently, I'm suffering from severe depression and anxiety and it keeps getting worse....

...See more I’m so lonely. I’ve only had online friends during the pandemic. I just wanna go on a camping trip/road trip/youth type thing with some other people my age. I’m so lonely. The online friends are great but they’re all from different countries/regions in my country so I can’t even visit them. I just want a real life friend to go to malls with and spend time with. I’m so lonely. I don’t know what to do.

Have a crush on an online friend…

...See more Hi! I have a big crush on an online friend I’ve known for two years now. I’m positive he’s not a creep (I have seen his face, my friends are his friends, he genuinely is a good person and in these two years hasn’t done anything remotely suspicious.) I know for a fact he likes me back because we confessed a week ago. But I didn’t realize how much the idea of dating makes me nervous. I had an anxiety attack after because I didn’t know what to do next. But I really like him! My emotions for him are so conflicted and as much as I’d love to date him I can’t bring myself to do it. I ended up telling him I wasn’t ready.  If anyone has any, I would love some pointers.

...See more There's this girl we're gonna name her 700, I really don't like her because she flirted with my ex-boyfriend then after I broke up with him I became friends with her and then like a couple of months ago I stopped being friends with her because she attracted drama to herself and I don't want that life. Then I started liking a friend of hers, pineapple. pineapple is so sweet but basically, I messaged her about him and she knew that I liked him and then I started talking to him and she told me some things about him that I didn't really like like he asked her to homecoming but then I asked him about it and he said he just wanted to go with a friend because he has nobody to go with. then they argued, became friends again, and hang out ALL THE TIME. Now, Pineapple rejected me because I wasn't energetic enough and I was too quiet even though the first thing he told me was that he was quiet, and I told him that if I got to know him more I would open up more and be more energetic and stuff. And keep in mind 700 is so energetic like annoying kind of energetic. and my friend, we're calling her grape, saw a picture that 700 posted on her story and the guy behind her hugging her looked like pineapple (I didn't see the picture, if I did see it I'd be able to identify him based on his hair) so she told me that it was and I was maaad and I don't know if its logical to be mad. then this morning I saw her hug a guy so I don't even know if they're together but maybe she cheating because she be doing that a lot. I just really don't know what to do, if I should even do anything. Also, this girl copied my hair because I went red and she went red and after the red faded I went black and then she went black. like are u trying to be me or what?? but anyway she just always has had no respect for anyone else's relationships, especially mine. I don't know if I should do anything about it, please helppp. also if they are together she made him block me because I'm blocked. i have her blocked as well.

...See more So. I was in a relationship with a girl for like 4 months, and it was kinda messy. She's a very mentally weak person in general. She's 16, and I'm close to 18 now. She's from Germany, I'm from Egypt. On our last 2 weeks, we had a lot of arguments, because she was not able to keep her promises and like let me help her and help to keep the relationship. I was trying to help her, but she didn't want to help herself, and she pushed me away badly. By cheating on me with another guy. I discovered it, listened to her explanation, and she refused to breakup with him. So I snapped at her and told her extremely mean stuff, and that made her attempt to overdose, or to kill herself and stuff. So she cheated, and I almost killed her mentally, then I blocked her immediately. After that, it has been like 2 months, and I found a male friend who's from the same country as her, and had him like make a teasing prank on her In her dm And the friend said that I should clear things out with her instead of like bullying her online, and I agreed. Obviously, we kinda argued at the beginning, as both of us were really overwhelmed. I even cried a lot to myself during that. Then something unexpected happened After clearing a lot of misunderstandings about stuff (except for the cheating) And the fact that I almost had her kill herself, I guess it meant that we both are equal at making mistakes So I asked her if we should take a second chance She agreed, and she broke up with the guy, because I guess he was rude to her daily, and he wasn't good We are on like the 6th day of our reunion now, in the relationship And things have went horrible horrible She kept making mistakes, that I warned her on, because they were a trauma for me. So I pointed them out to her in a caring way But it happened a couple of times And that overwhelmed her badly, and she has no will nor strength to take accountability, she's sensitive to every little thing. Her brain is pure chaos She wants to kill herself, and the communication we had was the worst thing ever, she says that she hates herself, but at the same time she never blames herself when she makes a mistake. I offered to help her, she accepted, but now she pushes me away again I got deeply hurt because of her for a while day, with continuous cries. She says that this is the new her Talking to me in way that hurts A few hour ago she threatened to block me, so I blocked her And she came back wanting to clear things out, from a random group I haven't left She had a confusing talk, that she wants me to be a friend untill she heals And at the same time, when I say something about leaving her, she says "Go ahead, do it" Her mind is in chaos, and I'm dying from the inside because I don't know what to do anymore And now I came here seeking help. I'm overwhelmed My heart is breaking Just like that day she cheated on me on She keeps hurting me, and says that she doesn't wanna hurt me at the same time "I don't wanna be your girlfriend untill I heal" And then proceeds to hurt me again She hates herself deeply She made false promises about trying to be a good partner, or atleast try to not destroy everything again I even made a plan that she agreed on To discuss the things she don't want my help on, and other things that she would accept my help on We literally had fun preparing that yesterday So that she doesn't feel forced when I try to help her, so I have her take her own choice on what she accepts to be helped on It was going perfectl And now everything is crushed No matter how hard I try, she never looks at the good side of things Assuming the worst after everything last night, she called me a manipulator out of nowhere Because I apologized for talking about my issues to her I know that I can just leave her and save myself But she's suicidal She already tried it before By overdose Nobody in my family can help or support me They are not supportive My environment is not healthy, or encouraging I don't have friends Her biological father did something bad to her in her childhood, and now her step father abuses her Her little brother turned against her, and her mom has anger issues I don't blame her for being like this, but I don't deserve this pain She wanted to breakup, but the issue isn't me, she is the whole issue. I try to listen, and think that this time she will actually accept my help as she promised, but no. I managed to send her a number for suicide lines, but I doubt she will actually call it, or chat. I'm so overwhelmed by everything. I wanna see her happy, I don't want to let go of her, if she gets in another relationship, she will suffer worse than this. Especially from guys who would probably target her, she's in a non religious area, so it's less likely to have people who don't fear God in hurting others. I need any help.. please...

...See more Hey guys. So I have a bf of 6 months (we’re both in high school going to our sophomore year) and he is an amazing boyfriend. In fact tmrw is his birthday lol. Anyways, I am having trouble finding a way to tell my parents. I am pakistani and my bf is chinese. My parents are racist especially my mom when it comes to east asian people. After I moved schools in elementary school, I’ve always ended up becoming friends with east asians and they’re great people. My 2 best friends are japanese and taiwanese. I also have other friends of other races as well. But my mom always complains about me being friends with asian people and she calls everyone chinese. So in December, I started dating my current bf and during break he came over and met my parents. (I’ve also told my parents that he’s smart and a nice kid which all are true). They also know I talk to him everyday and that we’re friends. I know I should tell them because of this but my parents have made it very clear that they don’t want me to have an asian boyfriend. Idk what to do cuz it’s been 6 months already and I really want to tell them, but my parents aren’t great people either. I asked my best friend and she told me to never tell my parents because of how awful they can be. The main reason I want to tell them is so I can hang out with him whenever. My parents haven’t let me out the house on my own until this school year (i just started high school last year). So what should i do? Should i tell them?  Note: I am pakistani which means I am muslim and so are my parents. However, we aren’t a very religious family and my parents are against me talking to guys or too against dating either, so when things come to religion, I think that’s a matter I will speak to my parents about.

...See more Hi um i am a male 14  I have never been really interested in relationships as I deemed them irrelevant as I grew up, there would be times I would get sad after watching couples happily stroll by me, I have never opened up about this topic, but today tipped me into this because I have never felt so alone and empty, when I spoke  to myself today it wasn’t a feeling a loneliness that just by talking into a cave the voice slowly fades away, today it feels like I want to feel heard and just yell as hard as I can, but the cave absorbs my voice with no echo to be heard, today I feel so lost, all through out middle school I never had a talking stage,I have never had a girlfriend, I never had any female friends all through out middle school, let alone ANY sort of friends, now as a high schooler I see 4 times the amount of relationships that I saw in middle school, I feel so hollow that girls do not look my way, and that any upperclassmen can just exist, and have like 20 girls surrounding him, I hate seeing these people in relationships, I have never had anything against them, but why can’t I get a try? When is it my turn? When can I get the blessing of having a girl who only has eyes for me?? Why? Why not ME? I hate these happy people I hate seeing any of them happy? Why isn’t my effort less effective when they don’t even TRY?? My blood boils whenever I see happyness fill their eyes, why can’t happyness fill MINE?? Why am I the odd one out??? The only times I don’t feel like an empty void, is when that void is filled with boiled pure hatred, I want to stop hating, but that’s the only way I know how to respond to these stupid happy people, I don’t want to live in misery, I want to get out of this cycle, when. Will. It. Be. My. turn.
