Tips for Dealing With Unhealthy and Abusive Relationships

...See more [TW: discussion of abuse] ------------------------- Types of relationships Relationships can be healthy, unhealthy, or abusive. 1) Healthy relationships Healthy relationships are not perfect, but most of the time they’ll have the following qualities: Respect, trust, and safety * Feeling supported by your partner and like you can rely on them * Maintaining respect even when there are differences or disagreements * Equal power when it comes to decision-making * Feeling like it is safe to be vulnerable and have emotional closeness Open communication * Being able to share things honestly without fearing punishment or ridicule * Being able to discuss sensitive topics like physical intimacy and economic/financial arrangements * Both people listen and try to understand and empathize with the other person's perspective Healthy boundaries * Respect for boundaries * Enjoy spending time together but can be happy apart * Okay to have some privacy and personal space * Okay to have your own interests, hobbies, and relationships with friends/family 2) Unhealthy relationships Unhealthy relationships lack some of the qualities listed above that are present in healthy relationships, for example: Lack of respect, trust, or safety * Not being able to explore or share feelings safely * Feeling like partner won't be supportive or listen if you share things * Feeling like if you share vulnerable things, your partner will use them against you * One person has all of the power to make decisions or is unwilling to compromise * One person’s needs and opinions are dismissed Communication issues * Not listening to what the other person has to say or having empathy * Ignoring, disrespecting, or minimizing feelings * Disagreements often turn into intense, hurtful fights * Frequent arguments without resolution * Avoiding discussing problems * Lying or dishonesty * Using insults, harsh criticism, or words designed to hurt during arguments Lack of respect for boundaries * Being coerced into doing things you don't want to do * Being pressured into only spending time with your partner * Strong jealousy and guilt-tripping when spending time with other people or on your own hobbies and interests * Being pressured into intimate or sexual activity * Invasion of privacy * Lack of respect for personal space or belongings 3) Abusive relationships Abusive relationships are similar to unhealthy relationships but also include a pattern of one person manipulating or frightening the other, usually to maintain power and control. Destruction of safety and trust * Threats (or acting on threats) to hurt you, themselves, loved ones, or pets * Threats (or acting on threats) to destroy things you own * Threats (or acting on threats) to spread rumors, share secrets, or share private photos/videos * Physical harm such as hitting, slapping, pushing, or restraining against your will * Physical or sexual touching that you do not consent to Harmful communication * Saying degrading, intimidating, demeaning, or humiliating things * Treating ideas, feelings, and experiences with contempt * Intolerance of disagreement and dismissing perspective completely * Blaming you for their problems and making you feel responsible for their behavior Absence of boundaries: isolation * Trying to prevent you from seeing friends/family or go to school/work * Pressuring to spend all of your time with them or guilt-tripping for not doing so * Trying to persuade you that other relationships don't matter or that they are the only one who cares about you * Telling you to not talk to anyone else or reach out for help about the relationship Absence of boundaries: control * Reading text messages, e-mails, or social media messages without permission * Trying to monitor and control what you wear, where you go, and who you spend time with * Expressing extreme jealousy and constantly checking up on you ------------------------- Tips for unhealthy relationships 1) Deciding whether to stay in a relationship If you’ve been trying to work on the relationship for a while, it may be worth asking whether the relationship is worth keeping. Some signs that the relationship is still worth working on and trying to improve: * You’re both willing to accept responsibility for things that need improving and work on trying to change them * You both haven’t given up on trying to improve things * You still trust each other enough to be vulnerable and forgive past mistakes * You still care about each other’s well-being * You’re still emotionally close Some signs that the relationship may not be worth trying to save: * You’ve both given up on things improving * You’re no longer emotionally or physically close * You have insurmountable differences in your values and goals * You no longer trust each other * It’s difficult to imagine being together in the future * The relationship has become abusive 2) Healthy communication Couples who have lasting and satisfying relationships tend to follow certain patterns in how they communicate with one another. Use “LARA” for difficult conversations: * Listen: listen with the goal of understanding * Affirm: confirm that you understand what's been said and try to find common ground or something they’ve shared that you can agree with * Respond: respond directly to any concerns or questions they’ve shared rather than talking past what they’ve said * Add: add your own perspective Use “I” statements: * This means using phrases like “I feel”, “I think”, and “I believe” when sharing things or giving feedback * This can help to avoid blaming or attacking the other person while communicating Use assertive communication: This is one of four communication styles: * Passive communication: being hesitant to share things; can lead to unmet needs * Aggressive communication: disregarding the other person's feelings; can lead to increased conflict * Passive-aggressive communication: expressing frustration indirectly (e.g. sarcasm, silence, subtle jabs); can create confusion or distrust * Assertive communication: expressing needs and feelings clearly while respecting the other person's perspective; helps build understanding and resolve conflicts 3) Healthy boundaries Boundaries are the limits, rules, and expectations that we establish for relationships with others. Some examples of boundaries: * Freedom to have your own thoughts or opinions * Limits on how much time you spend with someone * Control over privacy, space, and your body * Limits on what topics you are willing to discuss * Limits on how much emotional support you offer someone else One framework that can be used for communicating boundaries is DEAR MAN: * Describe: describe the situation * Express: express your feelings * Assert: state what you want * Reinforce: explain how the other person will benefit * Mindful: stay focused on your goal * Appear confident: present yourself as confident * Negotiate: be flexible and open to alternative solutions 4) Self-care Self-care is doing things that help with taking care of your well-being. Some benefits of self-care in the context of relationships: * Can help build resilience to stress so that difficult interactions don't affect you as much * Can help you recharge and recover after difficult interactions * Can help you have the personal resources to be able to engage with people effectively Some examples of self-care: * Taking care of your body through exercise, diet, and sleep * Setting aside some time for yourself to engage in hobbies or activities that bring you joy or relaxation * Connecting with friends or loved ones you enjoy spending time with * Acknowledging and processing emotions, for example through journaling or talking to a therapist * Engaging in spiritual practices like prayer, mindfulness, meditation, or yoga ------------------------- Tips for abusive relationships Why people stay in abusive relationships People in abusive situations often have good reasons for staying: * Fear of physical harm/injury if they try to leave * Fear of harm to friends, family, pets, or people who are trying to help them leaving * Fear of abuser taking away children or the challenges of being a single parent * Not having the means to leave or live alone, financial dependence on abuser * Having established relative control within the abusive situation (e.g. being able to predict partner's moods and skillfully manage them to minimize abuse) * Abuser has promised that things will get better or that abuse won't happen again * Feeling guilt at the idea of abandoning abuser or feeling a responsibility to help them * Caring for partner and still feeling love toward them and wanting the relationship to work * Feeling like they deserve the abuse or won't find anything better if they leave Staying safe while in an abusive relationship These are some things that can be helpful if you are not able or willing to leave an abusive relationship: * Find safe ways to communicate with friends and family (e.g. private phone, computer in a safe/trusted place) * Have a safety plan for different situations (e.g. what to do during incidents, keeping children safe). Here are a couple resources that might be helpful: https://www.dvccct.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Domestic-Violence-Safety-Plan-DVCC-.pdf https://www.courts.oregon.gov/programs/family/domestic-violence/Documents/DVSafetyPlan.pdf * Reach out for support to a crisis line, counselor, advocacy group, or local services * Build as strong of a social support network as your partner will allow * Be kind to yourself and engage in self-care activities as you're able to [You can also review the tips listed above for unhealthy relationships and see if there are any items there that feel helpful or like you’d be able to implement them without risking your safety.] Leaving an abusive relationship These are some things that can be helpful if you are considering or planning to leave an abusive relationship: * Use a secure phone or computer while researching and planning how to leave * Notify trusted friends, family, and coworkers of your situation and any plans you have * Decide where you'll go. Domestic violence shelters can temporarily provide for living needs and help provide referrals to other services (e.g. legal help, counseling/-support, child care, employment programs, etc.). You may also be able to find long-term housing options or assistance programs. * Pack an emergency bag with essentials (e.g. clothes, medication, documents, items for children) * If able to do so without causing suspicion, change the passwords to your e-mail, social media, and financial accounts * Have a safety plan for different situations that might occur after you leave. Here are a couple resources that might be helpful: https://www.dvccct.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Domestic-Violence-Safety-Plan-DVCC-.pdf https://www.courts.oregon.gov/programs/family/domestic-violence/Documents/DVSafetyPlan.pdf [Note: these tips mostly apply to domestic abuse situations where someone is living with their abuser] ------------------------- Sources The information above is condensed from the following resources. ...See more Hello everyone, I am going through a really rough season in my life right now. I am 33 years old. My 14 year relationship ended with my ex-fiance 10 months ago. He was going on multiple trips to Thailand and was cheating on me with prostitutes since 2023. This is really hard for me to cope with because I loved him so much and he promised me he would never cheat on me. During the beginning of my relationship when we were still talking/getting to know each other, I opened up to him about my childhood trauma. I was sexually abused as a kid by two men. Growing up, all I ever really yearned for was to find a sincere and genuine relationship. But I feel like I haven't had much luck with finding the one.  I did try dating apps for a while and met this guy on there. We hit it off and would talk on the phone almost every day. We met up in person four times and have been intimate with each other. However, over time since the last meetup I noticed we were talking less. He would tell me I can call him anytime but that if he doesn't answer that I shouldn't take it personally. He is not easily reachable. I've called many times where he didn't pick up and I don't hear from him until several days later. Maybe his interest fizzled out and he got bored of me? It's disappointing because i genuinely liked him and saw potential in developing something long-term but he said he's not really into boyfriend/girlfriend labels and is fine with what we have currently. He wants to keep things casual and it feels like he was only after one thing. I feel like I will never find a true genuine life-long partner. I am afraid I am going to grow old alone...no family of my own... no partner to share my life with. It is very depressing. It is hard for me to sleep at night because of the empty space beside me. I yearn for hugs that no one can give me now. I don't know how to cope with this, I am struggling to rebuild my life from the ground up.

...See more there’s something I’m struggling really hard with … most of it is unexplainable kind… and maybe because of the reason that most of it I haven’t understood or possibly accepted myself but like it’s still so tuff to deal with these thoughts and so many emotions … conflicting ones ..  how does moving on from someone who was once vv important to you and who claimed to luv you but ended up abondoning you for no reason… look like?  is it possible to move on without closure?  quite literally clueless on what moving on even means… can someone help explain it a little.. or share any experiences or personal thoughts on it??  how does one even know they’ve moved on?  more importantly …. how to move on??  there’s like a million thoughts in my brain rn…. all meanieeee and unhelpful… I’d really appreciate any insight or gentle word here 😭

...See more For the last 8 1/2 years, I've been going through a hard mental breakdown 😔 I was cheated on and off again, every month, every year. Together with him for 11 years and married for 9. I dont know why I stayed so long ? Now all I feel is numbness. To top it off he ended up being bi-curious after all the cheating was done. Told me he had feelings for a dude while in our marriage. I don't know how to feel or be anymore. Im lost.

Let it Go!

...See more Breakups can often leave us with heavy, painful feelings, and with a desire to change in order to move forward after the end of the relationship. Moving forward involves identifying the painful emotions or thoughts and labeling what we prefer to feel or think. In this exercise, try to list 2-3 feelings or thoughts that you can change or let go of in your personal life, then try to list 2-3 feelings or thoughts that you would want to have instead. Sample Response: 1. I want to let go of the hurt, resentment and sadness that I currently feel from my recent breakup 2. I want to experience peace, happiness and self-love.

Somewhere Between Holding on and Letting Go

...See more To be honest, I don't even know how to start this. My name is Dylan. I'm 19, and I just got out of a relationship with a girl I was with for two years. We got together when I was a junior in high school, and she had just graduated. We knew each other from work. We were always talking, joking around, and became friends for about six months before I finally worked up the courage to ask her out. She was my first real relationship, and she was my first everything. At first, everything was going great. Then, about a year into the relationship, we started having problems. She told me I was smoking too much weed, falling asleep all the time, not listening to her enough, and not taking her out or doing things together like couples should. I understood where she was coming from, and I felt guilty because I knew some of it was true. I told her I would change. So I started trying. I slowly cut back on smoking. I listened to her more. If I was playing a game and she wanted to talk, I'd turn it off immediately. I started asking her out to eat more often. She always drove because I didn't have my license. For a little while, things seemed better. But after a while, every time I asked her to go out, there always seemed to be a reason she couldn't. She had plans with her sister, her family, or something else. We also had Sunday dinner with her family every week. I wasn't always the most talkative person, but I'd listen and join in when I could. Some days I talked a lot, and other days I barely said anything. That became another issue. I tried explaining that it was hard for me to speak up because I often got talked over, and it reminded me of my abusive dad. Everyone in her family had strong personalities, and it made it difficult for me to find a place in the conversation. Even after telling her that, nothing really changed. I still ended up blaming myself. Eventually, we had another serious talk. She told me she wanted me to be more of a man, talk more during family dinners, get my driver's license, and find a better job since she had gotten a new one. Her parents had also started talking badly about me, and I felt like that influenced how she looked at me. I told her how I felt too. I said I didn't like that she never stood up for me when her parents talked about me. I told her I felt like I always came last. I also reminded her that I had been trying to take her out more like she wanted. Her response surprised me. She said she thought she'd enjoy going out on dates, but she'd actually rather just pick up food and eat at home. I accepted that, but I also told her she could be controlling and bossy at times and that we needed to communicate better. Things settled down for a while. Then a new guy started working with us. Let's just call him "***." He was taller than me, rode a motorcycle, and was in better shape than I was. My girlfriend was a manager, I was a busser, and he worked nights as a line cook while I worked mornings. At first, I thought they were just coworkers talking. After a couple of months, he moved away, but she added him on ***. I eventually found out they had been talking on *** for ten months while we were still together. He came back to town twice without me knowing. One time he stopped by work to pick up some things. Another time he came back to get his cats. They met up again, talked, and she even got into his truck to see the cats. He told her she should come visit him sometime, and she laughed and said, "Maybe one day." Not long after that, we started having more relationship problems and decided to just be friends with benefits while still spending time together. About two weeks later, she started acting differently. We'd get on Fortnite with friends, and after we got off, she'd immediately hang up our call. A week later, I found out she was talking to another guy. That's when she finally told me about "***" and admitted they had been talking and FaceTiming. I tried talking to another girl myself, but I couldn't do it. It just broke my heart. Then I found out she had been emotionally cheating on me. She said she felt bad about it, but she also told me she was planning to go on vacation in two months to visit him "as friends." They were planning to ride his motorcycle together and go to the beach. That hurt more than anything because it felt like she moved on so quickly. She kept telling me nothing was going to happen between them. I told her I didn't believe that. I even joked, "I'll bet you ten bucks you two end up having sex." She smirked and said, "Nothing will happen... maybe kissing and second base, but not third." That answer destroyed me. She even brought up how hard it had been for her to show me her body when we first started dating. Before I knew all of this, I had asked her how this guy made her feel. The biggest smile came across her face, and she blushed. That's when I knew she already had feelings for him. Even after everything, I still call her because I don't want to lose her completely. She tells me I blame myself too much, and maybe she's right. I probably do. When she admitted she'd been talking to him for ten months, she even said, "You should be mad at me." But I couldn't be. I didn't even know what I was feeling anymore. There's a lot more to the story, but this is as much as I can write right now. I know it's all over the place, and I'm sorry. This is the first time I've ever really tried putting everything into words.

Would it be a good idea to continue being friends with my ex?

...See more So this is my story. It all starts in the mid of 2022. I was 15 at that time and I had joined an institute for preparation of jee exam. It was a local one so there weren't many students, infact I was the first in my batch. The second one to join was a girl. At first I didn't even talk to her, but we slowly hit it off and after a month, we entered a relationship. This was my first time being in a relationship. She had been in a few before, but I didn't care about that. She was the most perfect girl.We used to tell each other EVERYTHING and our bond was built on total trust. Fast forward to 2024 and we were still the same as earlier. Now it was time for my jee exams and her neet exams. Also the classes ended and with the pressure from the exams,we now met much less than before. So after both of our exams had ended, meeting at institute was over. So after march we barely met . Now I was 17 and she was 18.Also at that time I got really busy with researching about college and stuff and due to this ,we also texted alot less but this wasn't a problem until after a few months I started to feel different, I felt like this distance had somehow changed my feeling. I felt like I didn't love her the way I used to but she still was giving her absolute best to me and opening her heart out. This made me feel really guilty. I didnt tell her about this. I thought maybe meeting her would fix this. I met up with her and we went on a date . But at the end of the day ,I still felt that it just didn't feel the same to me and seeing her that day and how she acted around me and how much she loved me only made me feel worse about myself. I couldn't bring myself to break up and our 2 year anniversary was coming up and I knew I couldn't celebrate it feeling like this, so I finally gathered the courage to break up with her in mid 2024. The breakup was very hard on her because we were so interdependent. Back then, there was a cycle of her blocking and unblocking me. She used to talk to me and rant about the breakup and even about me to me(ik it sounds weird).I stuck around because I still felt guilty and neither of us had anyone else to talk to. Then this cycle of block and unblock happened a few more times until finally she just kept me unblocked. We had started talking as friends. She had taken a drop year for neet. Over the course of 2025 our frequency of talking varied sometimes we talked alot but sometimes very less. Now at the end of 2025 she was going to a college and we even met once.We were both very awkward with each other. Its 2026 now and we still talk. Recently we started talking alot more. At this point, we had made it clear that we will not be coming into a relationship again. We started coming closer, atleast that's what I felt. We did phone calls and stuff and acted as normal close friends. I had a soft spot for her. After the break up, for a lot of time I thought I still liked her and maybe that was true but over time I've come to accept that as my soft spot for her. I do regret breaking up but I've come to accept that as well.I noticed how she had been giving me less attention and I'm totally fine with it. So recently when I asked her to call me she said she will after her exams. So around 4 days ago.she called me and she was having a break down. She told me  her close friend had proposed to her and that she didn't know what to do.I talked to her, calmed her down and after that we talked about alot of other stuff. So this same thing has happened more than once. She had trouble so she called me even though she refused earlier. I want to be clear that we didn't just talk when there was drama. We were normal close friends who called each other regularly, even when things were fine.Basically when she doesn't wanna talk to anyone, she talks to me. I'm still her comfort zone. But this time it was regarding a boy. After talking to her. What I gathered was she isn't sure whether she likes him but she doesn't want a relationship for sure. But all of this didn't matter to me cause well we were just friends.yea.. At the night of the day she called me. She blocked me from everywhere. It kinda affected me when she blocked me but after a few hours I was okay. I'm over it. I don't know what to do moving forward. I think she'll unblock me soon like she used to in the past, she is always the one who comes back to me first but what should I do? Should this friendship continue or not.
