Forum Guideline Refresher: Listener Boundaries & Utilizing Member Accounts
by Heather225

Whether you are new to the community or a seasoned Listener, it’s always good to refresh ourselves on the guidelines that keep our platform safe. One topic that comes up often is Listener Boundaries (specifically Forum Guideline 7) and knowing when to use a Member account.
The Golden Rule: Maintain the Listener Role
When you are logged into your Listener account, your primary focus should be on giving support. If you are going through a tough time, need to vent, or are looking for emotional support for your own personal struggles, please switch over to your Member account.
This ensures that anyone reaching out to a Listener is connecting with someone who is currently in the right headspace to help.
-------------------------
Relating vs. Seeking Support
It is totally natural to want to connect, but there is a clear line between empathizing with someone and accidentally reversing roles:
* Okay (Relating): Briefly mentioning a past experience to validate a Member's feelings and show them they aren't alone. (e.g., "I hear you. When I dealt with anxiety, I felt really overwhelmed too.")
* Not Okay (Seeking Support): Sharing your current struggles in a way that shifts the focus to you, which puts the Member in the uncomfortable position of having to comfort you.
-------------------------
Keep Your Accounts Separate
To protect everyone's boundaries, 7 Cups requires your Listener and Member identities to remain completely separate.
* Please do not link your two accounts in your bio or username.
* Avoid announcing, "I'm going to switch to my Member account now." Just log out and log back in!
* Keeping these separate stops lines from blurring and prevents Members from feeling obligated to support a Listener they previously confided in.
Listener Boundaries are enforced in Forum rule #7: "Users are expected to maintain a listener role if on a listener account. This includes not seeking emotional or personal support and following the expectations of a listener outlined in active listening. Please switch to a member account if necessary." Please note that violations of this guideline result in post removal.
-------------------------
What About Listener Support?
If you had a heavy chat and need to decompress about your listening experience, that is what Listener-only spaces, such as the Listener Support Room [https://www.7cups.com/chat/?c=2_2b554a18cf379d85bN8W7-fzi03rI51eauafmg], Peer Supporters [https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSc2yFIiL6az6UEOc5LNqOOERpM7D0g8F49x0qjbIq7QwhJOBQ/viewform], and Mentors [https://www.7cups.com/listener/training/mentors/]are for! However, if you need to talk about your own real-life problems, please log into your Member account to get the dedicated support you deserve.
Taking care of your own mental health is just as important as being there for others. By keeping these boundaries clear, we keep the community safe, organized, and supportive for everyone.

Hi everyone, I hope you all are well. Did you know you can follow 7 Cups on your favorite social media platforms?
Social media can be a mixed place, on one end we can find accounts/pages related to all of our favorite things but on the other hand, it can make us compare ourselves to others and sometimes interact with less than positive content. On our social media accounts, we share positive content focusing on inspirational quotes, the great things happening in our community, and what's up in the mental health world with a little fun in between. Our aim is to provide you with content that is good for your mental health.
Following 7Cups social media accounts not only makes a positive impact on your feed, but it also helps us reach more people. More people can know about our platform and can benefit from our mission. That's quite a win, win if you ask me!
To acknowledge and show our appreciation for the support you show you and us! Everyone who follows the following social media accounts will receive the ‘Super Supporter badge'

This new badge sits next to your username, making it easier to signal your standing and dedication to the community and supporting our members!

A Verified Listener (VL) has taken the steps to demonstrate their active listening skills through a verification process. Becoming a VL is an important way to build trust, showing that you understand the core guidelines of providing empathetic, quality support.
It also unlocks new opportunities, acting as a stepping stone to take on other roles in the community (see Leadership Opportunities [https://www.7cups.com/listener/training/leadership/]). Ultimately, it highlights your commitment to your personal growth and the listener journey

Two Simple Steps to Submit the Listener Review

Hello everyone! This post will explain how a member can leave feedback for a listener in the 1-1 chats.
As you all might know two things:
* We have updated the 1-1 Chat interface [https://www.7cups.com/forum/siteupdates/FeatureUpdates_2525/FeatureUpdateChat20rollout_307518/] a few months ago.
* Feedback is part of our community culture and we encourage feedback!
Here are two easy steps to submit the feedback.
Step - I) Click on the ellipsis (…) displayed at the top right corner of the chat box. Select, “End chat”!
Step -II) The Listener Review Modal will appear. Select the “*” for the ratings and write the review to submit it.
Here are the screenshots of how to do it in both - browser and app mode!
I) Browser
II) App
Sharing feedback is helpful and we all encourage you that whenever you have a chat with a listener. Please do share your experiences of the chat as feedback. Your feedback helps us to serve the community better.
Notes:
* Review or Feedback are two terms that you may find used interchangeably at times. So, if someone says “share the feedback” or “leave the review”. It means they requesting your feedback based on your experiences.
* If you have ongoing communication, then you can focus on the conversation to share and get support. We received feedback from the community, about how showing up a review pop-up in the middle of the conversation was distracting for members and also feedback submitted wasn't constructive. So now when members/listeners feel the conversation is done for the hour, either of them can end the chat to prompt the feedback pop-up for constructive feedback.
* Please note to leave the review, you need to have at least some conversation with the listener.
Feature Request - 2 Factor Authentication and Account Security Improvements

So I just realised this when editing my account settings,
And I'd like there to be an update to fix this, because I believe this is a glaring account security risk.
There is currently no authentication process for changing your account password, and no 2 factor authentication. This means, all someone needs to do in order to steal your 7 Cups account - is know the email you're using.
To change your password, you should be required to verify your current one - which leads me to the next problem:
There needs to be an optional 2-factor authentication - this feature is standard for most social media accounts, and even though 7 Cups is not a social media - I'm surprised it doesn't have 2FA.
This 2-Factor Authentication, when setup and enabled - should require you to verify your 2FA when logging into 7 Cups on a new device, and changing any security related account settings such as your password and deleting/de-activation. (for both Listener and Member accounts, if linked to the same email)
I also want to point out that this 2-Factor authentication method should only be for "Authy" or other 3rd-party authenticator apps, while authentication via email should still be available - SMS based authentication should not, as it is vulnerable to social engineering and SIM hi-jacking which can compromise any account (not just 7 Cups) associated with the user's phone number.
How to use the Help Center for submitting feedback

Hi, everyone!
Just want to let you know that we have updated the channel through which we accept feedback/site suggestions. We moved away from the Google form and now ask submissions be put through the Helpdesk (linked here) [https://help.7cups.com/hc/en-us/requests/new] within our Help Center (here) [https://help.7cups.com/hc/en-us].
Why we made the change:
* Centralize all feedback: Keeping everything in one place makes it easier for us to review and track your suggestions.
* Respond more effectively: The helpdesk allows for two-way communication, so we can ask clarifying questions and keep you updated on the status of your feedback.
* Prioritize and organize: This system helps us manage the volume of feedback and focus on the most impactful suggestions.
* Data: By tracking feedback trends, we can identify areas for improvement and make informed decisions about future development.
The Helpdesk also serves the following:
User reports
Product support (bugs)
Account deletion
Age verification
And more (see the dropdown for all options)
You can also visit the Help Center itself to find answers to common questions. [https://help.7cups.com/hc/en-us]
We hope this new process makes it more convenient to share your valuable input. Thank you for your continued support and for being a part of our beloved community!
Feature Update: A new community page

The most important thing about 7 Cups is the community - all of you. This community of listeners, members and therapists helping each other is rather special. But we still receive feedback that it can be hard to navigate the community or to find your place in it. There are many aspects to this (better search please!) and we can't solve it all at once. An improvement that we've been working on is exploring how to elevate the most important aspects of the community and make it easier to dive into.
This has lead us to the development of a new community page for the website that will replace the forum homepage. This community page keeps all the forum elements that were there already (lists of communities, feeds of content, guidelines, search) and sprinkles in a few more things that have been requested.
For members, the additions are a carousel highlighting the browse listeners page (how many times have you recommended that page to a newbie that didn't know about it?), a new route into the chat queue (with info on wait times), a live updating list of facilitated group discussions and the recently developed community updates module.
For listeners, many of the same elements plus a carousel highlighting available mentors. Increased visibility of the mentor programme is something that has been widely discussed.
Change is never easy, and I'm sure this will be no different for some of you. If you'd like to take the new page for a test run before it goes live in the next few days, feel free to PM me.
Feature Update: Forum Threads

Hi, everyone. I know it’s been a difficult few days for the forum users. I have been in a couple of threads dropping updates. Our engineering team has been working on a way to fix database scaling issues. It's common in technology that fixing one problem can inadvertently create a new one, considering the interconnected nature of complex systems. I am eternally grateful for your patience and I can now say we’ve got good news!
Engineering has come up with a brand new version of the threads that should balance performance with usability. It should resolve loading issues, allow access to entire threads quickly, and have all the parent-child threads open by default (you can simply click to collapse the threads you don’t want to see below the user’s name). The changes have just gone live.
Explore the new design and lemme know if you encounter any technical trouble.
Thanks again for hanging in there with us and I hope this change creates a more enjoyable and supportive experience for the forum space.

Why did y'all eliminate the branching conversation format in the forums? Logged in today only to find it's gone now & all the comments are in a simple sequence instead. I can't find my place in a convo anymore.

Just a quick note that we've fixed the Noni reminders bug. I know this one was troubling many of you. You can now edit or remove your Noni reminders as you'd like. There was also a timestamp issue in your Noni chat that cropped up which has also been dealt with.
Can we notify people when their post or thread gets deleted?

I recently had a thread deleted that was between one to two years old. This was frustrating to me, because it had many comments, and people were still commenting on it from time to time. Perhaps the site could be updated so that posters would be notified when their thread or post is deleted (and it would have to include an explanation as to why).
Feature Update: A More Rewarding Streak!

Howdy, all!
You might have noticed that we’ve released new profile rollovers on the website. Facilitating supportive and safe interactions between all different types of users is why we exist. Our hope is that the new rollovers make it easier and fun to see who your fellow cupsers are - and learn a little something about them.
As part of this, we’ve updated the streak mechanic to make it more rewarding. Previously it only recognized completing a path step as contributing to a streak. As 7 Cups has evolved over the years, so has the myriad of things you can do to feel better or grow. Streaks now reflect this and you can continue to build a streak even by simply visiting the platform (for which you’ll now earn some growth/cheers points).
Whilst we’re here, we should also mention that upgraded user profile pages are coming soon too. We haven’t given these important pages much attention in recent years so we’re excited to give them an upgrade!
Feature Update: Adding your forum posts to your profile

A common request we receive is to make it easier to find your own forum posts. So soon we will be adding your historical forum posts to your profile. This is already live for listener profiles on the website (e.g. click on my profile above to see my historical posts) and will be made live for member profiles in the coming days too.
When listeners try to support a member, its helpful for them to know more context about the member. Likewise, when a member is receiving support from a listener, its helpful to know more about that listener.
Thats why profile pages are some of the most popular parts of the site. Adding your historical posts to your profile makes it one step easier for all users to get better context and understanding. Right now if you're looking for a user's forum posts, you have to use forum search - a slower and more cumbersome way to find the context you need to help someone.
I hope this update will make just a little bit easier to connect with someone else and provide/receive support.
Feature Update: Quote reply in chats

All, this is an update we're really excited about. In 1-1 chats and group chats, you can now do a quote reply! This is where you can select a specific message to reply to, and then your reply includes a short visual of the message you replied to. Thats probably not the simplest description... so instead, I encourage you to try it out for yourself.
This update is only on the website for now, but we will be bringing it to the mobile app soon.
Using quote reply makes it easier for supportive conversations to flow - as all participants can better understand when a message is referring or replying to something or someone specific. Its a feature widely used on many messaging platforms.
To give it a try, click the backwards arrow underneath a message.
We hope you find this a helpful update.
Welcome to 7 Cups HQ. This is where all news and updates will be posted by staff and ambassadors, subscribe to stay in the loop!
