Forum Guideline Refresher: Listener Boundaries & Utilizing Member Accounts
by Heather225

Whether you are new to the community or a seasoned Listener, it’s always good to refresh ourselves on the guidelines that keep our platform safe. One topic that comes up often is Listener Boundaries (specifically Forum Guideline 7) and knowing when to use a Member account.
The Golden Rule: Maintain the Listener Role
When you are logged into your Listener account, your primary focus should be on giving support. If you are going through a tough time, need to vent, or are looking for emotional support for your own personal struggles, please switch over to your Member account.
This ensures that anyone reaching out to a Listener is connecting with someone who is currently in the right headspace to help.
-------------------------
Relating vs. Seeking Support
It is totally natural to want to connect, but there is a clear line between empathizing with someone and accidentally reversing roles:
* Okay (Relating): Briefly mentioning a past experience to validate a Member's feelings and show them they aren't alone. (e.g., "I hear you. When I dealt with anxiety, I felt really overwhelmed too.")
* Not Okay (Seeking Support): Sharing your current struggles in a way that shifts the focus to you, which puts the Member in the uncomfortable position of having to comfort you.
-------------------------
Keep Your Accounts Separate
To protect everyone's boundaries, 7 Cups requires your Listener and Member identities to remain completely separate.
* Please do not link your two accounts in your bio or username.
* Avoid announcing, "I'm going to switch to my Member account now." Just log out and log back in!
* Keeping these separate stops lines from blurring and prevents Members from feeling obligated to support a Listener they previously confided in.
Listener Boundaries are enforced in Forum rule #7: "Users are expected to maintain a listener role if on a listener account. This includes not seeking emotional or personal support and following the expectations of a listener outlined in active listening. Please switch to a member account if necessary." Please note that violations of this guideline result in post removal.
-------------------------
What About Listener Support?
If you had a heavy chat and need to decompress about your listening experience, that is what Listener-only spaces, such as the Listener Support Room [https://www.7cups.com/chat/?c=2_2b554a18cf379d85bN8W7-fzi03rI51eauafmg], Peer Supporters [https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSc2yFIiL6az6UEOc5LNqOOERpM7D0g8F49x0qjbIq7QwhJOBQ/viewform], and Mentors [https://www.7cups.com/listener/training/mentors/]are for! However, if you need to talk about your own real-life problems, please log into your Member account to get the dedicated support you deserve.
Taking care of your own mental health is just as important as being there for others. By keeping these boundaries clear, we keep the community safe, organized, and supportive for everyone.

Hi everyone, I hope you all are well. Did you know you can follow 7 Cups on your favorite social media platforms?
Social media can be a mixed place, on one end we can find accounts/pages related to all of our favorite things but on the other hand, it can make us compare ourselves to others and sometimes interact with less than positive content. On our social media accounts, we share positive content focusing on inspirational quotes, the great things happening in our community, and what's up in the mental health world with a little fun in between. Our aim is to provide you with content that is good for your mental health.
Following 7Cups social media accounts not only makes a positive impact on your feed, but it also helps us reach more people. More people can know about our platform and can benefit from our mission. That's quite a win, win if you ask me!
To acknowledge and show our appreciation for the support you show you and us! Everyone who follows the following social media accounts will receive the ‘Super Supporter badge'

Forum Guideline Clarification: Language Inclusivity

Hello everyone,
We are a global community, and we are lucky to be able to welcome folks from all parts of the world and all languages. Starting today, we are making a move to a more inclusive environment to better accommodate our global user base: forum posts in other languages are now officially allowed.
Forums operate asynchronously, which gives both our community members and our moderation team the time to use external translation tools.
Going forward, you may post in the language of your choice. In doing so, we ask that you also include an English translation with your post. Google Translate is a great, quick option: https://translate.google.com/
What about live chat rooms? Please note that this rule change applies only to the forums. Forums operate asynchronously, which gives both our community members and our moderation team the time to use external translation tools. Our group rooms will still use English only. Chat rooms move quickly, and keeping a single language there is essential so that everyone present can be included in fast-paced, real-time conversations.
Thank you for helping us embrace diversity and grow and adapt into a more welcoming community for everyone.
-------------------------
Keep in mind all posts must still abide by the Forum Guidelines. Please do not flag the content unless you speak the language or use an accurate translator.
Community Reflections: Guidelines for the One Line Everyday Journal

Hi everyone,
The One Line a Day Journal has become a vital part of our daily routine here at 7 Cups. It is a space where we can pause, check in with ourselves, and offer silent support to one another. To ensure the Community Reflections feed remains a safe and healing environment for everyone, we are sharing this updated set of guidelines for public journal entries. Please keep these in mind when you choose to make your daily line public:
1. Safety and Crisis Support
The public feed is intended for daily reflection and emotional processing. For the safety of the entire community, please do not post content regarding active self-harm, suicidal ideation, or graphic trauma. If you are in crisis, please reach out to a professional or a dedicated crisis service immediately.
2. Protecting Your Privacy
To maintain your safety and the safety of others, do not share personally identifiable information in public entries. This includes:
*
Full names or addresses
*
Phone numbers or email addresses
*
Social media handles or external links
3. English Only Space
To ensure our moderation team can effectively maintain safety and support for everyone, all public journal entries must be written in English. This is the same rule adapted from our forums and group rooms. If you prefer to journal in another language, please keep those entries set to "private."
4. Religious Topics
We recognize that for many, faith is a vital part of emotional wellness and daily reflection. Because our community is wonderfully diverse, religious topics can sometimes unintentionally make others feel excluded. To ensure the public feed remains a neutral, unifying space for quiet connection, please keep religious or spiritual reflections out of your public entries. We encourage you to continue using the journal for these deeply personal reflections by switching them to the "private" setting. For open, public discussions regarding faith, please visit our Religion & Spirituality forum [https://www.7cups.com/forum/religion/].
5. General Community Standards
All public journal entries must align with our site-wide standards. This means no medical advice, no promotional content or spam, and no language that is harmful, judgmental, or exclusionary. You can find our full, detailed guidelines here: 7 Cups Forum Guidelines [https://www.7cups.com/community-guidelines/Forum-Guidelines-3c989621981b4b6db6c722d76274b058] & Community Guidelines [https://www.7cups.com/community-guidelines/]
6. Listener Boundaries and Role Integrity
For our Listeners using this feature: please remember that your public reflections must align with your role. Any public entry that could be viewed as crossing the listener role (such as sharing confidential information, venting about members, or undermining professional boundaries) is strictly prohibited. Your public presence should reflect the same standards of trust and safety expected in the chat rooms.
The One Line a Day feature is designed for quiet connection. While other members cannot comment on your public entries, they can "heart" them to show you are heard. We encourage you to use this feature to offer validation and kindness to your fellow community members.
For a refresher on how the feature works, including how to toggle entries between private and public, you can visit the original announcement here: One Line a Day Journal Feature [https://www.7cups.com/forum/siteupdates/General_2444/OneLineaDayJournalFeature_349548/]
Thank you for continuing to make this space a source of light and reflection!
