Forum Guideline Refresher: Listener Boundaries & Utilizing Member Accounts

...See more Whether you are new to the community or a seasoned Listener, it’s always good to refresh ourselves on the guidelines that keep our platform safe. One topic that comes up often is Listener Boundaries (specifically Forum Guideline 7) and knowing when to use a Member account. The Golden Rule: Maintain the Listener Role When you are logged into your Listener account, your primary focus should be on giving support. If you are going through a tough time, need to vent, or are looking for emotional support for your own personal struggles, please switch over to your Member account. This ensures that anyone reaching out to a Listener is connecting with someone who is currently in the right headspace to help. ------------------------- Relating vs. Seeking Support It is totally natural to want to connect, but there is a clear line between empathizing with someone and accidentally reversing roles: * Okay (Relating): Briefly mentioning a past experience to validate a Member's feelings and show them they aren't alone. (e.g., "I hear you. When I dealt with anxiety, I felt really overwhelmed too.") * Not Okay (Seeking Support): Sharing your current struggles in a way that shifts the focus to you, which puts the Member in the uncomfortable position of having to comfort you. ------------------------- Keep Your Accounts Separate To protect everyone's boundaries, 7 Cups requires your Listener and Member identities to remain completely separate. * Please do not link your two accounts in your bio or username. * Avoid announcing, "I'm going to switch to my Member account now." Just log out and log back in! * Keeping these separate stops lines from blurring and prevents Members from feeling obligated to support a Listener they previously confided in. Listener Boundaries are enforced in Forum rule #7: "Users are expected to maintain a listener role if on a listener account. This includes not seeking emotional or personal support and following the expectations of a listener outlined in active listening. Please switch to a member account if necessary." Please note that violations of this guideline result in post removal. ------------------------- What About Listener Support? However, if you need to talk about your own real-life problems, please log into your Member account to get the dedicated support you deserve. Taking care of your own mental health is just as important as being there for others. By keeping these boundaries clear, we keep the community safe, organized, and supportive for everyone.

...See more We are excited to announce a new upcoming feature: Compassion Jar Last month, we launched our upgrade and back 7 Cups campaigns in our attempt to become a sustainable organization. We will be launching a feature which better involves the community in the process of becoming sustainable. This update will allow everyone to better understand and visualize our collective goals and how we are doing in reaching them. This special feature will be a compassion jar. Every time someone backs 7 Cups or upgrades their account, the jar will fill up a little more. We will let everyone know and we will all celebrate as a community because every penny helps us help more people in need. We will have weekly goals that we can track based on how full the jar is getting through the week! Remember, the most exciting this is that every time someone backs 7 Cups or upgrades their account, one more person in need gets free emotional support.

Our fix should go into effect in the next 24hrs or so. The next time you chat, post in the forum etc, you may notice some badge alerts pop up if you had any missing. Enjoy! 🎉

[https://www.7cups.com/forum/SiteUpdatesInformationFortheCommunity_100/SiteUpdatesDecember2016_1090/December14ListenersPMingMembersFeature_55871/]However, here are the hot items to know: Listeners who reach the both of the below outlined badges will be able to PM Members: ----> Tick Tock: For reaching ten 1-on-1 chats with members ----> Loyal Friend: Listeners who earn 1 approved positive review Members you may receive a PM from a Listener for the following reason: 1) A friendly welcome to the community 2) A listener saw a post of yours in the forum and wants to support you 3) A listener interacted with you in group support and wants to support you 4) A listener saw one of your feed posts and wants to support you 5) If you are working on a community project with a listener & they PM you to collaborate There are likely other situations too! Members, you will have the ability to opt-out of this feature. If you do not want Listeners to PM you, you can turn this off on your settings page. We believe that this update will increase support giving in the community and encourage listeners to support and community build with members in a more dynamic way! I will be present in the community throughout the day tomorrow and available to answer your questions in this thread or in the chatrooms. We know this update may present us with more opportunties to learn and make the site better & I am excite to do that together! Additionally, a form will be provided tomorrow (after launch) providing a way for you to share bugs or give additional feedback on the update!

This has been on the app for some time now and we are excited to add it to desktop! All you need to do is log out & you will see this new upde appear on your settings drop down. You'll want to make sure that your listener & member accts are linked up to the same email address to utilize this feature. It looks like this - Yay!!!! Enjoy easy acct hopping!

In addition, Appreciation and Gratitude will be updating its name to be Positivity and Gratitude. Compassion Corner will remain as the 24/7 chat room, and the pop up discussion room will be Positivity Corner. We look forward to strengthening the community by joining these two great SCs into one. Listener training has a new addition

...See more We are excited to announce we've added another section to our Active Listener training that covers how to take your first chat. This is a tour of the product (general queue, tools available in the chat box, navigation tips, etc) to help our new listeners feel more comfortable. Want to check it out? Did you know you can always re-take the initial listener training? It is the Active Listener training at the very top of all the available trainings. This is not a large change, but one we think will be helpful to our brand new listeners. We will continue to work on enhancing our new listener experience and have a few projects in the works. Listener Certificate Levels just leveled up!

...See more Listening to someone to offer support is why 7 Cups exists, and we offer a unique volunteer experience that allows us to listen on our schedule. Without dedicated volunteer listeners we would not exist! As such, we want to make sure those who volunteer in this capacity get recognized and have a way to authenticate their time spent volunteering. Which leads us to: Listener Certifications got a makeover… again! Weve added 6 more tiers. Why? We wanted the first few to be easier to achieve, and we wanted to curate the required trainings, badges, listening hours, etc to really reflect a Listener who is dedicated to growth and learning (not to mention time spent listening). There are now 10 certification levels. Check out your current level here [https://www.7cups.com/listener/training.php] (click the certificate button to toggle over from the training page). For simplicity and professionalism they are named for their level, for example Level 1, Level 2, etc. These are not associated with the badges and levels of passing the active listener trainings. You must still fill those out if you would like to achieve those badges and credentials. Please note you must be on a Listener acount to access the page 👆 ⚡️The mix of cheers, training guides, badges, star ratings, and chat hours are how we guide a listener to continue growing. Fun Fact: At the time of this posting, no one has reached level 10 yet (but a few are close!) We've opted to remove the four badges associated wtih passing the Active Listener trainings/tests: graduate, master, rocket, and scholar. Expect to see those poof soon. When you achieve a level the downloadable certificate button will turn blue. The first and last name you used to make your account is what will show up on the certificate. You can update your name in my settings anytime. What level are you?
