Forum Guideline Refresher: Listener Boundaries & Utilizing Member Accounts
by Heather225

Whether you are new to the community or a seasoned Listener, it’s always good to refresh ourselves on the guidelines that keep our platform safe. One topic that comes up often is Listener Boundaries (specifically Forum Guideline 7) and knowing when to use a Member account.
The Golden Rule: Maintain the Listener Role
When you are logged into your Listener account, your primary focus should be on giving support. If you are going through a tough time, need to vent, or are looking for emotional support for your own personal struggles, please switch over to your Member account.
This ensures that anyone reaching out to a Listener is connecting with someone who is currently in the right headspace to help.
-------------------------
Relating vs. Seeking Support
It is totally natural to want to connect, but there is a clear line between empathizing with someone and accidentally reversing roles:
* Okay (Relating): Briefly mentioning a past experience to validate a Member's feelings and show them they aren't alone. (e.g., "I hear you. When I dealt with anxiety, I felt really overwhelmed too.")
* Not Okay (Seeking Support): Sharing your current struggles in a way that shifts the focus to you, which puts the Member in the uncomfortable position of having to comfort you.
-------------------------
Keep Your Accounts Separate
To protect everyone's boundaries, 7 Cups requires your Listener and Member identities to remain completely separate.
* Please do not link your two accounts in your bio or username.
* Avoid announcing, "I'm going to switch to my Member account now." Just log out and log back in!
* Keeping these separate stops lines from blurring and prevents Members from feeling obligated to support a Listener they previously confided in.
Listener Boundaries are enforced in Forum rule #7: "Users are expected to maintain a listener role if on a listener account. This includes not seeking emotional or personal support and following the expectations of a listener outlined in active listening. Please switch to a member account if necessary." Please note that violations of this guideline result in post removal.
-------------------------
What About Listener Support?
If you had a heavy chat and need to decompress about your listening experience, that is what Listener-only spaces, such as the Listener Support Room [https://www.7cups.com/chat/?c=2_2b554a18cf379d85bN8W7-fzi03rI51eauafmg], Peer Supporters [https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSc2yFIiL6az6UEOc5LNqOOERpM7D0g8F49x0qjbIq7QwhJOBQ/viewform], and Mentors [https://www.7cups.com/listener/training/mentors/]are for! However, if you need to talk about your own real-life problems, please log into your Member account to get the dedicated support you deserve.
Taking care of your own mental health is just as important as being there for others. By keeping these boundaries clear, we keep the community safe, organized, and supportive for everyone.

Hi everyone, I hope you all are well. Did you know you can follow 7 Cups on your favorite social media platforms?
Social media can be a mixed place, on one end we can find accounts/pages related to all of our favorite things but on the other hand, it can make us compare ourselves to others and sometimes interact with less than positive content. On our social media accounts, we share positive content focusing on inspirational quotes, the great things happening in our community, and what's up in the mental health world with a little fun in between. Our aim is to provide you with content that is good for your mental health.
Following 7Cups social media accounts not only makes a positive impact on your feed, but it also helps us reach more people. More people can know about our platform and can benefit from our mission. That's quite a win, win if you ask me!
To acknowledge and show our appreciation for the support you show you and us! Everyone who follows the following social media accounts will receive the ‘Super Supporter badge'

An Adult-Teen Listener (ATL) is a specially trained volunteer who provides support to teen members. By becoming an ATL, adults gain access to the teen side of the community, where they can conduct one-on-one listening sessions and participate in teen member group chats to help youth feel heard. In addition to helping members, ATLs also support teen listeners by sharing their experiences and resources. Because adults have already navigated the confusing and challenging teenage years themselves, they are uniquely positioned to offer valuable guidance, comfort, and stability to youth who might not know who else to reach out to.

This is a listener profile:
I'm often asked what People Helped and Chats mean.
1 Chat = 30 messages exchanged back and forth between the listener and a member.
People Helped is the unique individual with whom you have reached that 30-message milestone at least once. So the "People Helped" metric on a listener's profile represents the number of single individuals the listener has had a chat with!

To ensure our community remains a safe and supportive space for everyone, it’s important to know how to reach us. The 7 Cups Helpdesk [https://help.7cups.com/hc/en-us]is our primary channel for reporting issues, as it allows our team to track, investigate, and resolve your concerns as efficiently as possible.
Whether you've encountered a technical glitch or a behavioral concern, here is a quick breakdown of how to find those reporting tools based on the platform's current layout:
1. Through the Helpdesk (Global Reporting)
If you have a technical bug or a general site issue, use the Helpdesk.
Where to look: Click your Profile Picture (top right of the screen).
The Action: Look for "Report an issue" in the dropdown menu. This creates a formal ticket for the 7 Cups support team.
2. Within a Chat (User/Behavior Reporting)
If you need to report a specific interaction or a member who is breaking community guidelines:
1:1 Chats: Look at the top right of your chat window for the three dots (...). Click there to find the report option.
Group Rooms: Similar to 1:1s, the "..." menu in the top right allows you to report the room or specific behavior.
To protect your comfort, in PMs, you can block. In the group rooms, you can mute users.

Whether your journey here started 7 minutes ago or 7 years ago, you are part of a massive, living, breathing world. Since 2013, 7 Cups has evolved into a global movement of compassion and is now home to thousands of listeners and millions of members.
But how much do you really know about the extraordinary collective we call 7 Cups?
Welcome to "Did You Know? 7 Cups" [https://www.7cups.com/forum/siteupdates/General_2444/DidYouKnow7CupsFactsMasterpost_373130/], an ongoing series where we share facts and behind-the-scenes details that make 7 Cups what it is today. Since our community is constantly evolving, these posts won't be in any particular order. Instead, they are bite-sized pieces of information to help us all feel more connected to the impact we’re making.
I have dug through the archives, the guidelines, and the old legends to compile a list of facts about our community. From safety policies you need to know to fun trivia about our badges and bots, this series covers it all.
For example, did you know that since August 2013, 1,818,598,937 messages have been sent and 72,298,116 people have been reached by 563,378 listeners across 189 countries in 140 languages? Now you do!

If you’ve been browsing 7 Cups, you’ve likely noticed that some listeners have a purple checkmark next to their name. While every listener completes a basic training course, the Verified Listener (VL) badge is the community's way of highlighting those who have gone the extra mile to prove their skills. For members, a Verified Listener offers a higher level of confidence that you will be met with deep empathy, reflection, and validation from a listener vetted by leadership who has undergone hands-on training to ensure they provide quality care.
For listeners, the badge is a gateway to leadership. Becoming verified is the baseline for applying to roles like Mentor, Peer Supporter, or Chatroom Moderator. It shows you are dedicated to your own growth. This process allows you to sharpen your communication skills, receive expert coaching, and distinguish yourself as a beacon of trust within the community.
