A Belated Welcome to May: Mental Health Awareness Month 💚

...See more "Little by little, a little becomes a lot." – Tanzanian Proverb 🌱 Hello everyone, Welcome to newcomers and returning members of the depression support community. Whether you just joined or are coming back after time away, you belong here. 💚 May is Mental Health Awareness Month. First, I want to sincerely apologize for this late post. This month carries such an important message, and it's one worth sharing no matter the date. Even as we move further into the month, the focus remains the same: the courage to keep going, the power of small actions, and the hope that tiny joys can still reach us. This month's prompt: Create a Dopamine Menu 🍏: What is a Dopamine Menu? A Dopamenu is a simple tool to help you boost your mood and motivation. Just like a food menu, it gives you choices. You pick activities based on how much time and energy you have. The goal is to help your brain release dopamine or the "feel-good" chemical, without pressure or perfection. Blank Template : Example of Dopamenu 🍈: How to Use your Dopamine Menu : Step 1: Print or save the blank template. Step 2: Fill in each section with your own ideas. Use the example for inspiration. Step 3: When you feel stuck, pick one thing from your menu. Start with a Starter if you're really low. Step 4: Do it. No pressure to finish. No guilt if you stop early. Step 5: Repeat whenever you need a boost. Feel free to share your Dopamine Menu in the comments! Sending love and light, Angelanj

...See more It's so difficult when the only people who can help you don't even take you seriously..  If I die will you take me seriously then? Only when I'm dead will you feel all the pain I kept inside.  You wonder why you don't know anything about me?  Well I wonder too.

Severely Depressed Yet expected to Function.

...See more Hey. So I am 17, and I have been struggling for a lot of my life. I can't tell any details, but I can write about how I feel. I have been Depressed for almost 1.5 years and have had issues with bullying, trauma, and family issues even before that.  I carry such deep self-hatred that I don't even like to hear my name or see my face... I blame everything on myself. These past few months, it has become rather severe, and I have been diagnosed with severe depression. Therapy hasn't been going well because I don't really tell the full truth about some things in my past; I downplay my suicidality too. I find it extremely hard to focus and avoid studying often. I spend my days in isolation, only going out sometimes for soccer. I don't go to school either; I am open-schooling.  My midterms are starting soon. I have failed almost all of my exams since my mental health started deteriorating. I don't really find joy in anything these days, and my way of thinking is also extremely distorted. I find it hard to come up with a reason to, you know... keep going. And I spend most of my time in my head or just numbing it using video games or YouTube and stuff like that. I don't want to fail again because it will have consequences this time, but I just can't get myself to study. I don't remember the last time I felt happy.

...See more hey everyone, I’m new here and recently I’ve been struggling so much with family infighting and having a *** relationship with my mom because she refuses to take any responsibility for herself, so instead she takes out anger on me and tells me I need to shut up and change when I was the one begging her to change the whole time . It’s so unfair and I hate living like this . It’s made me so incredibly depressed and hopeless about my life and my future because I feel like I have nobody on my side these days. My mom is supposed to be the most important person in my life and she wants nothing to do with me. I just wish I could disappear and hide away from all this forever : (

...See more I’ve had depression for so long now. They come and go. Every time I think I’m getting better it just comes back again in a cycle. How do I deal with not wanting to wake up? How do I deal with wishing something bad to happen so I could die? I don’t know why I feel happy when I think of myself dying. I’m not so scared dying like I was before. This time I might actually do it. I can’t keep friends and I’m so lonely ever since I knew I was different from many kids. I’m so tired but I don’t let myself rest. Life is too much to handle. I wish someone could just hold me. I can’t. I can’t take care of myself and my memory is so foggy. I push people away when I want them close. How do I handle this when I’m so tired?

...See more Hello everyone. I'm 16 and I've been suffering from depression for almost 10 months now. It has made my life extremely painful. My grades have dropped. But one of the most painful things is not feeling anything at all. I always feel numb. When I read or see people happy, I literally don't understand it. Emotions have become smt foreign to me. I feel so confused. Like I dunno how being human feels. Smt I get frustrated about when this will end. But I haven't just sat around. I'm doing some exercises and mindfulness. These help with depression.

...See more Can anyone relate to this? I have been suffering from depression for more than 9 months. Grades R falling. I can't study even if I logically know I should. I feel like it's all my fault. I'm subconsciously blaming myself. But I logically know it's not all my fault. But I still feel like it's my fault. I dunno why. Feel really ashamed of myself

...See more 17F, dealing with chronic stress from parents since middle school + nervous system shut downs. My mother and I rely on the insurance my father provides from his job. I have two half brothers—father hid that he had a child 6 years before I was born and had another affair with the same woman 1 year prior. My mother took her wedding ring off ever since. They're still married, same home. She doesn't know that he's still actively talking to her—s*xting, too. The other woman lives in Nigeria, where he is visiting now. I know he's seeing her and in the process of building them a house in Nigeria. If I revealed it to my mother, she'd freak out and they'd probably end up fighting until she moved out, without insurance to pay for her mandatory insulin and other medications. My father molested me when I was in middle school while we all were asleep in the same bed. Twice in a row. The next day he acted like nothing happened, and I never brought it up to anyone. I know he did not mistake me as my mother. You can not slip your hand down a gown. Mother is narcissistic, worships her own opinions, and weaponizes my vulnerability. Screaming, cussing, petulance, blatant ignorance, derogatory advances, and physical and emotional abuse. I admited I do not feel loved or cared for to her recently, and she felt insulted. She saw my SH scars a couple of years ago and her first response was how they didn't look pretty and how she worried what my future partner would think. Whenever she yells, my brain shuts down, I forget things, and my mind goes blank. I do not feel safe emotionally or physically at home. If I tell anyone, my father will most likely go to jail with having relations outside of the U.S. and abusing me at a young age. CPS would get involved with my mother. I will graduate to college 2027. The pain from constant stress, degradation, and hopelessness eat me alive now, and I know it will continue to do so then. I am carrying the burden of my parents decisions. What do I do? Who should I tell?

...See more My parents have had me locked in a cage my entire life. I'm from an asain Christian family, so the expectations are always very high. They expect me to get perfect grades, be the best at countless extracurriculars, and be a sweet, self-sacrificing, submissive daughter. It's so much pressure piled on top of me, and it's too much for me to handle. I don't know how much longer I can keep it up. I get perfect grades, but my parents have chosen these awful extracurriculars for me, completely disregarding my own hobbies and interests that I'm actually passionate about being the best at. I spend so much time perfecting what they want me to do that I have no time for myself--to do what I'm interested in, or even just to rest or hang out with friends (which I have no real ones because I'm depressed and not fun to be around, doing homework during lunch and break, and living and breathing schoolwork). I love reading and writing, and I sometimes skip eating lunch just to have some time to work on my novel. My parents want me to have a career in AI and Robotics, despite my telling them that I want to be a musical theatre actress and/or writer. I spend so much time on what they want me to do that I'm afraid that when the time comes for me to do what I actually want to do, I won't be good enough to do it for a living. They also yell at me constantly and compare me to my younger sister (the golden child). They say I should be grateful for everything they've done for me, and I am, I just don't know how much longer I can take this. They say they despise me more and more everyday and told me they're gonna ship me off to get me out of their hair (I sometimes snap and say what's on my mind instead of what they want me to hear). When my dad is angry, he's violent and scares me, he threatens me and hits me sometimes (though not that serious). He makes me call myself derogatory names and has this twisted extreme filial piety and kind of sexist view of things. He once said I should be begging on my knees for his forgiveness. I want to despise him, but he's my dad and he's going into a surgery that might kill him soon. I feel so guilty that I'm relieved he will be gone for a while. I'm also sad, our relationship is so strained right now and if he dies--he can't die, I think I still love him. What do I do? (Make this clearer and more succint) You’re carrying an overwhelming amount of pressure and emotional pain. Your parents expect perfection from you academically and socially while dismissing your own passions and goals. You spend nearly all your time meeting their demands—perfect grades, extracurriculars you hate, constant achievement—leaving no room for rest, friendships, or the things you actually love, like reading, writing, and musical theatre. You’re terrified that by the time you finally have the freedom to pursue your own dreams, you’ll be too burnt out or behind to succeed. At home, things feel emotionally suffocating. Your parents compare you to your younger sister, insult you, and tell you they despise you. Your father can be violent and intimidating when angry, sometimes hitting or threatening you and forcing you to humiliate yourself. He expects complete obedience and submission, which leaves you feeling trapped between fear, guilt, and obligation. Now, with your father facing a serious surgery, your emotions are tangled and confusing. Part of you feels guilty for being relieved he’ll be gone for a while because life feels safer and less stressful without him around. Another part of you is terrified of losing him forever because despite everything, he’s still your dad, and you still love him. You’re grieving the relationship you wish you could have had with him while also struggling under the weight of the pain he’s caused you. Turn this into first person I feel like my parents have kept me trapped in a cage my entire life. Growing up in an Asian Christian family, I’ve always been expected to be perfect—to get flawless grades, excel at countless extracurriculars, and be a sweet, self-sacrificing, submissive daughter. The pressure is overwhelming, and I don’t know how much longer I can keep carrying it. Even though I get perfect grades, the extracurriculars I do aren’t things I care about—they’re the things my parents chose for me. They completely ignore the hobbies and passions that actually matter to me, like reading, writing, and musical theatre. I spend so much time trying to meet their expectations that I barely have time to rest, spend time with friends, or be myself. Sometimes I even skip lunch just to work on my novel because it’s the only thing that still feels like mine. My parents want me to go into AI and robotics, even though I’ve told them I want to be a writer or musical theatre actress. I’m scared that by the time I finally have the freedom to pursue what I actually love, I’ll be too burnt out or too far behind to succeed. At home, I constantly feel criticized and compared to my younger sister, who feels like the “golden child.” My parents tell me I should be grateful for everything they’ve done for me, and I am—but I still feel miserable. They say they despise me more and more every day and threaten to send me away because I sometimes speak honestly instead of saying what they want to hear. My dad especially scares me when he’s angry. He can be violent, threatening, and controlling. He’s hit me before, forced me to call myself degrading names, and has extreme beliefs about obedience and filial piety. Once, he told me I should be begging on my knees for his forgiveness. Now he’s about to go into a surgery that could kill him, and I feel horribly conflicted. Part of me feels guilty for being relieved that he’ll be gone for a while because things feel less tense without him around. But another part of me is terrified something will happen to him because despite everything, he’s still my dad, and I think I still love him. I feel trapped between fear, guilt, anger, and grief, and I don’t know what to do anymore. Add a part how im isolated and lonely and just want to be loved by someone and how I think im selfish and wish I could be better I feel like my parents have kept me trapped in a cage my entire life. Growing up in an Asian Christian family, I’ve always been expected to be perfect—to get flawless grades, excel at countless extracurriculars, and be a sweet, self-sacrificing, submissive daughter. Once, he told me I should be begging on my knees for his forgiveness. A part of me feels selfish for struggling so much when my parents have sacrificed a lot for me. I keep thinking that maybe if I were kinder, more obedient, more hardworking, or just better somehow, things wouldn’t be like this. I wish I could stop disappointing people. I wish I could be the version of myself everyone wants me to be while still feeling like a real person underneath it all. Now my dad is about to go into a surgery that could kill him, and I feel horribly conflicted. Part of me feels guilty for being relieved that he’ll be gone for a while because things feel less tense without him around. Growing up in an Asian Christian family, I’ve always been expected to be perfect—to get flawless grades, excel at countless extracurriculars, and be a sweet, self-sacrificing, submissive daughter. My parents have told me that no one could ever truly love me, and I think those words have stayed with me more than anything else. It’s become one of my biggest fears—that maybe they’re right, that there’s something fundamentally wrong with me that makes me impossible to love. And the truth is, I think all I really want in life is to live peacefully and be loved by someone who sees me as a person instead of a disappointment or a project to fix. My parents want me to go into AI and robotics, even though I’ve told them I want to be a writer or musical theatre actress. ...See more Hey guys, so im 16 years old and about 2 months ago someone i was in a relationship/situationship with broke up with me.  It was right around our graduation so it didn't really hit me at first, but a few weeks into vacation i started feeling it (or rather there lack of).  I feel like I've just been going through the motions, and i get this hollow feeling inside, like I've been scooped out.  When I'm with friends and family everything feels normal, but as soon as I'm on my own a switch flips and I'm back to feeling nothing at all.  It gets worse at night, sometimes I feel anxious and find it hard to breathe.  My hobbies (like going to the gym, playing drums, songwriting), friends and family help me keep on track, but I'm just not sure how to help myself here.

...See more Summer holydays. A good thing right? No, definitely not, I believe they are but facts are saying a different thing. This years I had my exams and my anxiety didn't help so I've been nervous and stressed for all mid-june now the exams are finished and it's sure I've passed them but I'm not happy, I'm not celebrating or other things like that. I feel so damn tired mentally and physically, it feels like my heart is pounding slower than usual and that every breath is another weight on my back, I wake up in the morning and already want to get back to sleep. When I sleep I feel better because I don't feel anything, I've also started sh because my depression is not only that but a constant feeling of danger and anxiety that I can't control, is like my depression wants to sleep all day but my anxiety keeps me awake all night. So cutting and scratching my skin somehow calms my anxiety so I can finally sleep. Every day is a torture, how the *** am I supposed to continue living? How people can do that with many problems on their back? HOW?? And why should I do that too? Life is useless, I am useless, EVERYTHING is useless, but why??? Even the logic part of me is tired of just living like this. I've always had suicide thoughts but in these days they're getting stronger and more specific and detailed. I have depression since a few years ago and I usually lived like I didn't have it, I went to school, returned home, discussed with my mother, listened to music and did everything I could just to not think about my feelings and keep going forward, day after day. I don't take any antidepressants or similars because no one notice this, I became too good at hiding it, and the few people that knows only a little part of my problems? They don't care. I don't know what to do, because I can't sh too much because I don't want people seeing it and in summer I can't dress up too much, I can't try other ways to calm my anxiety (for example listening to music) because then I have to face my depression and I just can't get out of bed, I can't face the depression because then I remain with my anxiety and I can't relax a single second. I'm so confused and tired and nervous and frustrated, I envy people without these problems. And in all of this, there's still my mother screaming to me to clean the kitchen ignoring that even breathing normally has became an issue for me, usually I screamed to her too but now I don't have the strenght even for that. How do I get out? Many of my problems come out from my parents that just don't know how to grow a daughter correctly (and that's another problem) so I planned to move away when I can legally but how do I arrive there safely? Any advice frome anyone would be great and perfectly accepted. Sorry if I write here but I just needed to vent, my english is not good so sorry for any errors, sorry for bothering you with my problems and thanks for reading.
